DC orders assessment of financial loss to farmers
Kapurthala, January 23 The Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, had announced a four-member panel headed by the Transport Minister, Mr Mohinder Singh Kaypee, on January 11 for a comprehensive assessment of the damage to the crop in the state due to frost. According to the Horticulture Department, a total of 9000 hectares are under the cultivation of potato, while 500 acres of land is under the cultivation of tomato in the district. About 10-15 per cent damage has been estimated to the potato crop on 5400 hectares of land, which had been sown by the farmers before mid-October, while the remaining crop has suffered nearly 50 per cent loss, said officials from the Horticulture Department. The leaves of potato plants in the region have wilted badly due to the frost. Leaf is the basic site of photosynthesis, the main requirement for the growth of a tuber. “The farmers would suffer a loss of nearly Rs 20 crore if the price of potatoes is estimated at Rs 5 per kg. The total loss of potatoes, in terms of quantity, is estimated to be 40,500 metric tonnes,” disclosed Dr Jagjeet Sigh, Assistant Director, Horticulture, Kapurthala. The tomato growers in the region have also suffered heavy losses due to the frost, as half of the crop sown over 500 acres land in Sultanpur Lodhi, Phagwara and Dona areas has been damaged, according to Dr Jagjeet Singh. Brindpur, Madho Jhanda, Kassochahal, Rampur Jagir, Talwandi Madho, Naseerewal and Rupewal villages were found to be worst affected in the district. |

Patient commits suicide in hospital
Jalandhar, January 23 Twentyeight-year-old Jatinder Singh Sohal from Authola village in Kapurthala had been admitted to Saini Neuro-Psychiatry and De-addiction Hospital since January 19. The deceased was receiving treatment in the hospital as he was reportedly addicted to drugs. The hospital staff said he was responding to the treatment. The hospital staff claimed that Jatinder was reportedly upset after he had an argument with his younger brother, Jaspreet, who visited him in the hospital last evening. Jatinder is also said to have gone with his family for an outing last evening, which he was allowed to do. Dr Manjit Singh Saini, owner of the hospital, said Jatinder came back and he was seemingly well. He was given medicine at 10.30 pm. At the night when the hospital staff checked him, he was found sleeping, he added. It was only in the early hours of the morning that the hospital staff found his door bolted from inside. The staff is said to have knocked at the door for quite some time, but there was no response. Later, the staff broke open the door and found Jatinder’s body hanging from a ceiling fan. When the family of Jatinder reached the hospital, they vented their anger at the hospital staff. The brother-in-law of the deceased also reportedly broke the window panes of the hospital and a television set kept inside the hospital. The nursing staff of the hospital alleged that the brother-in-law of the deceased abused them and man-handled one of the nurses. The police reached the spot and Section 144 of the CrPC was implemented. Dr Saini said Jatinder seemed to be suffering from some “personal tension” due to which he took the extreme step. Family members of the deceased refused to discuss anything about the incident with the media. The body of the deceased was sent to the Civil Hospital here for postmortem. |

Phagwara, January 23 Replying to a question about the former SGPC general secretary, Mr Manjit Singh Calcutta, Mr Badal alleged that Mr Calcutta was working as a “tool” in the hands of the Congress and that he wanted to weaken the Akali Dal. When asked about any possible disciplinary action against Mr Calcutta, he said it would be better to ignore such leaders. “I made him (Calcutta) the party leader, the SGPC general secretary and even a minister and if he is not satisfied with me, what can be done?” Mr Badal said. He said he did not believe in vindictiveness, but all “misdeeds” of the Congress ministers and the Chief Minister would be inquired into if his government came to power. He added that the Dubai visits of Captain Amarinder Singh would also be investigated. He reiterated that his son Sukhbir Singh Badal would not contest in the Assembly elections. |
