Army officer falls to terrorists’ bullets
in Manipur

A family with a tradition of military service today lost its son when Lt-Col Rajesh Bakshi, a local resident, fell to terrorists’ bullet in the jungles of southern Manipur today morning. As the family put up a brave and stoic face, attempting not to shed a tear at the tragedy, well wishers and condolence messages began to flow in.

In a case of joint suicide, a young couple in their twenties jumped into the Sukhna Lake after tying their hands together with a dupatta. Their bodies were found floating this afternoon.

IT raids on, no let-up likely

On the second day of the raids being conducted on private colonisers, officials from the Income Tax (Investigation) Department today recovered around Rs 19 lakh in cash and some other documents from a bank locker of Mr Kulwant Singh in Mohali.

Human error responsible for UAV accidents

Terming human error as the reason for accidents involving the unmanned aerial vehicle in India, a study published by the IAF's Institute of Aerospace Medicine has recommended that "human factor" specialists be involved with the investigation of future UAV accidents to pinpoint relevant issues and suggest remedial measures.

Roadside junk dealer gets Rs 10,000 power bill

In a classic case of its kind, a junk dealer, who does not have any power connection, has been sent a bill of Rs 10,000. All because the Vigilance staff of Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam found a television set and some bulbs in his junk. Mr Ram Avtar, a resident of Mauli Jagran in Chandigarh, runs a junk shop on the roadside near village Bhainsa Tibba, Mansa Devi Complex, here. “I was earlier running my kiosk in Mauli Jagran and shifted here only nine months ago.

Rose garden in Sec-24 soon
Chandigarh, January 20
The city will soon have a second rose garden. The garden will come up on a six-acre green belt area in Sector 24. Around 3000 plants of 200 different varieties of roses will be planted.

MC reconstitutes committees
Chandigarh, January 20
The Municipal Corporation, reconstituted the committees under sub-section (3) of Section 42 and Section 41B of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, as extended to UT, Chandigarh. The term of all these committees will be up to December 31.

Man held for stealing stamp papers

The police has arrested a resident of Mani Majra on a charge of stealing stamp papers worth Rs 8 lakh from the tehsil office here yesterday. The arrested person, Tejinder Singh, was a resident of Pipliwala Town, Mani Majra.

Chhatrapati murder case: CBI submits status report

The Central Bureau of Investigation today submitted its status report on investigations into the alleged involvement of the management of Dera Sacha Sauda, Sirsa in the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati and Ranjit Singh, a former Dera inmate, to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Advocate awarded 3-year RI

The Special Judicial Magistrate of the CBI, Punjab, in Patiala has sentenced an Amritsar-based advocate to three years of rigorous imprisonment in as many as nine cases for allegedly cheating over 50 persons by handing them over forged orders purported to have been passed by the Supreme Court to terminated employees in their favour.

Bank fraud: 3 in police remand

A local court today remanded all the three accused, arrested by the Economic Offence Wing of the UT Police in connection with the fraudulently crediting Rs 70 lakh in their companies account, to two days of police remand.
