City gynaecologist gets fellowship
Ludhiana, January 19 She was one of the six fellows selected from all over the country from amongst the renowned medical professionals in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology. The recognition was accorded for her distinguished academic excellence and achievements in clinical work in the field. Earlier, Dr Jain was awarded membership of the International Gynaecology Cancer Society at Edinburgh, (Scotland) in October 2004 for her distinguished work in the field of Gynaecology Oncology. She was among those with the most experience in surgical management of gynaecological cancers, including cancers of cervix, uterus, ovary and vulva in the region. |
‘Doctors must follow ethics’
Ludhiana, January 19 Dr Grewal, who has been a student of the medical legend and former Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, Dr P.N. Chuttani, holds that he has learnt a lot from his teacher and he wanted to continue with his tradition. In a commendation note to Dr Grewal, which inspires him the most, Dr Chuttani had remarked, “He worked directly with me when I was at the institute. I am glad to say, I formed a very good impression of his clinical acumen, capacity to work hard and devotion to his patients”. Dr Chuttani goes further, “Eversince the completion of his studies at the PGI, he has earned a well-deserved clinical reputation…I can recommend Dr Gurinder Singh Grewal strongly for any position of responsibility that may be open to him, I am sure he will acquit himself with credit”. Dr Grewal recalls his association with Dr Chuttani with pride. He pointed out, “It was no simple achievement to have worked with Dr Chuttani and that too to his delight and satisfaction”. He maintained that he has learnt a lot from his teacher. Keeping himself updated with the latest developments in the world of medicine and trying to utilise the latest technology to the best advantage of the patients. Dr Grewal was the first to introduce the technique of ultrasound scanning in the North after Delhi. Since then he has introduced all modern facilities in his multispeciality hospital, which, he says, add to his clinical acumen. Dr Grewal asserts with pride that he would be the last person to offer any commission or to accept any for referring patients. “These are all short-term gains and ultimately it is your reputation as a doctor that counts in the long run”, he remarked, adding that for a while you may look to be going slow or sailing against the wind, but ultimately your work and worth gets duly acknowledged. |
Dental camp at St Joseph’s
Ludhiana, January 19 Medicines were also distributed free of cost to needy students and neighbouring villagers. Spectacles would be given to the needy students on January 27 at the school office. In addition to students, parents, grandparents, teachers and staff of St Joseph’s, residents of Dhandra, Kheri Jhameri, Manakwal, Mahmudpura, Beehla, Bhagat Singh Nagar, Janta Enclave, Basant Enclave and Tera Nagar also visited the camp. Cataract operations will be performed at the CMCH on January 29 and 30. The camp was organised by Ms Balwinder Kaur and her husband, Mr Devinder Singh Grewal. |
Sports festival at Samrala from today
Ludhiana, January 19 Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Malkeet Singh Dhillon, an NRI and the president of the association, said the main attraction of this year’s festival would be kabaddi matches and bullock-cart races. Besides, competition in athletics, weightlifting, cycle races and dog races would be conducted. Mr Dhillon said this year, the kabaddi cup tournament would be dedicated to the memory of Mr Rajvir Singh Rana, former Deputy Director, Punjab Dairies. Top outfits of the region Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Club of Norway, Sher-e-Punjab Kabaddi Academy, DAV College, Jalandhar, Baba Lodhiana Kabaddi Academy, Doaba Club of Nakodar, Tony Alankar Club of Kube, PSEB and Majha Kabaddi Club of Gurdaspur — would take part. On the concluding day of the festival, an exhibition match between Canada XI and Punjab XI in the men’s section and Malwa XI and Doraha XI in the girl’s section would be played. Similarly, position holders in the dog races would be give attractive cash prizes. The winners in the bullock-cart race would be given a Bajaj Chetak scooter along with the Nachhattar Singh Gehlewal Memorial Trophy. The first and second runners-up would receive a cash prize of Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively. Mr Baldev Singh, SDM, Samrala, would inaugurate the festival and Jathedar Kirpal Singh Khirnian would preside over the inaugural function. Mr Harbhaja Singh, chairman, Transport Association, Punjab, Mr Harbans Singh, senior kabaddi coach and Mr Harbans Singh, SAI coach (weightlifting) were among other office-bearers present during the press conference. |
PAU school lads register 6-wkt win
Ludhiana, January 19 Spring Dale School won the toss and opted to bat. They were bowled out for 132 runs in 36.2 overs. The main scorer was Saurav, who made 34 while Aatish and Anurag contributed 15 runs each. For PAU School, Atul Kohli was the main wrecker taking three wickets for just 4 runs while Vineet Sehgal took two for 5. Government Model Senior Secondary School surpassed their opponent’s total after losing four wickets in 25.4 overs. The main architect of their win was Atul Kohli who scored 54 runs. Other notable scorers were Kamal Narang (21), Saurav (13) and Ravi who remained unbeaten on 17. Spring Dale School’s successful bowlers were Darsha ( 2 for 230, Karan (1 for 11) and Rahul (1 for 4). |

Ludhiana, January 19 In the girl’s section (u-14 years), Chandigarh beat Andhra Pradesh 9-0 while Punjab drubbed Goa 9-0; Uttar Pradesh defeated Maharashtra 3-1; Haryana routed Chhattisgarh 9-0 Gujarat demolished Jammu and Kashmir 11-0 and Maharashtra outplayed Karnataka 4-1. In handball (u-17 boys), Manipur proved too good for Rajasthan 21-14 and Navodya School beat Karnataka 21-15; Chhattisgarh outclassed Uttaranchal 14-10 and Maharashtra pipped Gujarat 20-7; Delhi beat Madhya Pradesh 19-3; Punjab toyed with Jammu and Kashmir 12-1 and Andhra Pradesh outplayed Haryana 23-13. In the girl’s section, Delhi beat Haryana 11-8; Manipur defeated Chandigarh 6-1; Maharashtra beat Madhya Pradesh 14-3. In bassketball ( boys 17 years)- Haryana Uttar Pradesh 78-28; Maharashtra beat Chhatisgarh 45-25; Madhya Pradesh outnumbered Rajasthan 64-34 and Punjab overwhelmed Uttranchal 64-12. In the girl’s section, Madhya Pradesh beat Chhatisgarh 30-23; Punjab outnumbered Chandigarh 45-10; Kerala beat Uttar Pradesh 38-8 and Delhi defeated Uttaranchal 49-11.
