Staff development programme begins

Mohali, January 6
The All-India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) sponsored staff development programme at Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology, began here today. The programme is for the MBA faculty of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal, Uttranchal and 
Chandigarh.

Prof Suresh Chhadha, senior Professor at University Business School, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was the key speaker during the morning session. He highlighted the importance of knowledge management and corporate governance as key competitive advantage in the highly networked globalised world. He emphasised that values had become critical for the long term survival of a corporate entity and an organisation could not survive for long and grow beyond a point by following practices that are unethical.

During the technical session, Dr Aggarwal, renowned economist, highlighted the controversial Singapore issues of the WTO and its implications for developing countries in general and India in particular.

DAV team wins play contest

Chandigarh, January 6
Students of DAV College, Sector 10, won the stage play competition in MOOD INDIGO, a national-level fest organised by the IIT, Mumbai, annually.

The Dramatics Club of the college, popularly known as AAGHAZ, repeated history by winning the competition. There were 27 entries for from colleges across the country.

Some famous colleges that took part in the competition were Kirorimal College, Hindu College, Lady Shri Ram College, all from Delhi, IIT, Mumbai, Xavier’s College, Mumbai, Symbiosis, Pune, IIT, Kanpur etc.

Hardeep Singh Sethi was adjudged best actor in the fest. Other members of the team were Anuj Sharma, Ankit, Sameer Kaushal, Charandeep Singh Kalra, Vikas, Sahil, Saurabh, Sanjay, Gautam, Ajitinder Singh, Shivank, Manish, Ravish and Ayushmann.

A street play that has brought a lot of publicity and fame to the college in the past: continued its legacy. This year’s edition “Chal chhod na yaar…egjactly” earned second place in the street play contest. The play touched social issues like sting operations, fairness obsession, rape, etc.

Chandigarh, January 6
The Sikh Educational Society has decided to honour three prominent academicians for outstanding contribution in the field of Sikh history, research and education.

A press release of the society here today said that the awards for 2005 would be awarded to Dr Jagtar Singh Grewal, a former president of the Indian Institute of Advance Studies (Shimla) and a reputed historian, Dr Kirpal Singh, former head of the History Department in Punjabi University (Patiala) and Dr Prithipal Singh Kapur, a former pro-Vice Chancellor of Guru Nanak dev University, Amritsar.

The award has been instituted in the memory of Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra. Dr Balkar Singh will also be honoured on the occasion for writing a book on the life of Jathedar Tohra.

The awards will be given at a seminar at Guru Gobind Singh College for Women tomorrow.

Young author contest

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh city finals of the India’s biggest hunt for young writers, the Classmate Young Author Contest 2005, will take place at DAV College, Sector 10, here on January 8.

According to a press note, Prof SL Sharma, Professor of the Department of Sociology, Panjab University, will conduct a specialised workshop for participants to give them tips on creative writing. The writings will revolve around the genres of science fiction, thrillers and fantasy and judged by eminent jury.

The winner of the contest will be awarded a seven-day literary trip to London. TNS

Winter festival organised

Mohali, January 6
More than 150 students took part in various competitions held in connection with the winter rural cultural festival organised by the Centre for Rural Environment Education at Nadiali village here today.

Students from 10 schools from adjoining villages took part in contests held for group dance, group song and Shabad gayan.

Competitions for turban tying and debate will be held tomorrow.

NSS camp

Chandigarh, January 6
A 10-day NSS camp organised by Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46-D, concluded here today. Mr Ishwar Singh, Deputy Conservator of Forest and Chief Wild- life Warden-cum-Director Environment was the chief guest on the occasion.

Mrs N.K. Bhatia, the school Principal and Mr S.K. Sharma, the president of the Environment Society of India, also spoke on the occasion.

Simarjit Singh, Sagar, Sonia, Swati and Baljinder were chosen as the five best NSS volunteers in the camp.
