Woman paraded naked after tiff over constructing gate
Police accused of siding with the accused
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 5
A woman was allegedly paraded naked after an altercation with two persons on the erection of gate on the wall of her house in Danewal village near here.

Talking to media persons, the woman Darsho, a resident of the village, alleged that when she was away from her home, the two persons, Hindpal and Karamchand, of her village broke the wall of her house and constructed a gate in between.

On her return, she reportedly informed the Shahkot police about the incident.

After lodging the complaint, the police called both the parties to the police station.

Accusing the police of siding with Hindpal and Karamchand, Darsho alleged that the police officials threatened to put her behind bars and also demanded a bribe.

But on December 31, she was pulled out of her house by the two, who beat her up in the street and also tore off her clothes, she alleged.

She was saved after two women Nirmal Kaur and Veero of her village intervened.

She said her husband was currently working abroad.

The victim has sent her complaint to the Punjab Chief Minister, Director General of Police, Deputy Commissioner, Jalandhar, and the SSP, Jalandhar.

Addressing the media, the president of the Valmiki Mazhabi Sikh Morcha, Surinder Singh, and the district president, Darshan Lal Bhola, demanded that the accused be arrested.

The leaders also threatened to launch an agitation if the police failed to take any action.

ADC new Executive Director of NRI Sabha
Deepkamal Kaur
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 5
Following the acceptance of resignation of Mr K.K. Sharma as Managing Director-cum-President of the NRI Sabha, the NRI Commissioner has appointed Mr Ajoy Sharma, ADC (development), as its Executive Director.

A faxed communication in this regard was received in the office of the NRI Sabha last evening. Mr N.S. Kalsi, NRI Commissioner-cum-Chairman of the NRI Sabha, had reportedly mentioned that resignation of Mr Sharma, who was holding dual charges, had been accepted and Mr Ajoy Sharma had been taken as the new Executive Director. The ADC, however, did not join office today as it was a government holiday.

But the members of the Sabha have criticised the decision. They said it was yet another step on the part of bureaucrats to take over their NGO. The decision to accept the resignation of Mr Sharma who had devoted more than six years to the Sabha was uncalled for, they added.

Mr Pritam Singh Narangpuri, a member of the Sabha, said the state government was unduly interfering in their organisation. “Two ministers have been appointed as patrons of the Sabha through various amendments.”

He said the creation of the post of an executive director seemed to be yet another amendment in this direction. “All decisions are coming from the NRI Commissioner. He has never bothered to take the opinion of the members of the NGO.”

Mr Narangpuri said the Sabha members were apprehending that after the creation of such a post, there were chances that no elections would be held this time again. “If elections are held at all, more amendments would be made that so that the elected President was divested of all powers that he was otherwise able to exercise”, he added.

He said the decision of the NRI Commissioner to disallow ex-NRIs and nominees of NRIs was also uncalled for. “As such, only NRIs would be eligible to get elected to the executive body. If an NRI becomes a president, he will have to stay back to perform his duties. If he stays back for more than 182 days, he will no longer be an NRI as he would then become an ex-NRI.”

Thus the bureaucrats are working on a wrong theory without consulting those who have been making enormous contribution towards the economy of the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Kalsi had said elections of the Sabha would be held in the month of February as was being demanded by the Sabha members. No date has yet been announced.

Indo-Pak conclave aims to identify roadblocks to peace
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 5
The failure of the five Pakistani ministers, including one union minister from the Punjab province, to turn up at the ‘Punjab-Punjab Consultation’ notwithstanding, the stage is set for the brainstorming rounds of discussion by intellectuals of India and Pakistan to identify roadblocks and break the ice between the people of the two countries.

The four sessions of discussion between groups of farmers, traders, media persons and representatives of the tourism industry would start tomorrow at the Chaheru-based Lovely Institutes campus, which is hosting the event in association with the Punjab Chapter of SAFMA (South Asia Free Media Association).

Although cultural exchange programmes have been organised by the people from both sides of the border time and again, it is for the first time that a full-blown discussion has been planned on the vital issue revolving round the common motives—as to how people of both two countries could be brought together on one platform in shortest period of time and to identify the hurdles on the road to people-to-people cooperation.

“We expect the participation of about 50 delegates in each of the four rounds pertaining to industry, education, agriculture and media,” Mr Ramesh Mittal, chairman of the Lovely Group of Institutes, said.

“We have received 29 Pakistani guests so far and five more will join tomorrow. We would have Mr Imtiaz Alam, the secretary general of SAFMA, and Mr Munna Bhai, the chief of SAFMA’s Punjab (Pakistan) chapter, amongst us,” Mr Satnam Manak, the secretary of the Punjab (India) Chapter of SAFMA, said. “Discussions would be held on a realistic scale.”

He said that industry and agriculture were the two key fields which were expected to garner maximum attention during the conclave. “People from print and electronic media of the two Punjabs would also be holding a separate interaction at the venue,” Mr Manak said.

The programmes are scheduled to be held post-lunch wherein three conferences would be held at three different venues on Lovely campus.

Promotion of tourism for better understanding and exploration of cultural splendour would also be on the agenda of the proposed business meetings to be held in the auditorium. Conference regarding agriculture and allied activities would be held at Lovely Institute of Management. A meeting of writers, academicians and literary figure heads has been convened at counselling cell of Lovely Institute of Technology.

Industrial Tribunal to decide Bawa Shoes case
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, January 5
The retrenched workers of the closed down Bawa Shoes today lifted their over 90-day old chain hunger strike here after their case was accepted by the Industrial Tribunal in Chandigarh.

The jobless, protesting against the closure of the factory at Goindwal (Amritsar) under the banner of the Bawa Shoes Workers’ Union, had been sitting on a dharna in front of the Commissioner’s office here.

Mr Amarjit Singh Ansal of AITUC said the case was recently referred to the Industrial Tribunal after the intervention of the Punjab Labour Commissioner, Mr Som Prakash.

The Labour Commissioner had in a notice (a copy of which had been sent to the factory owners) questioned, “Whether the shifting/transfer of the machinery by the management from Goindwal Sahib to Jalandhar unit as alleged by the workmen amounts to closure of the factory?” and, “Whether the action of the management to retrench 513 workmen of the factory in the guise of closure without seeking permission from the specified authority under the I.D. (Industrial Disputes) Act is justified and in order? And if not, to what relief and with what details the concerned workmen are entitled to?”

The first hearing of the case is scheduled for January 30.
