Sukhbir Badal not to contest Assembly elections: Badal
Jalandhar, December 28 Mr Sukhbir Badal had earlier declared that he would contest elections against Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, from Patiala Assembly constituency. Talking to media persons here today, Mr Parkash Singh Badal said that the decision with regard to contesting in the elections was vested with the party. He added that Mr Sukhbir Badal had no right to declare on his own from where he wanted to contest. He also said the party was not going to field any Member Parliament in the Assembly elections. He alleged that the Captain government was misguiding the people of the state to divert their attention. He was here for a function in which some Congress members joined the SAD. |
Jazzy B fans get the stick
Jalandhar, December 28 It all began at the gate where tall, gaunt soldiers were seen shoving-off any civilian guest whom they suspected of not carrying a pass, as if a pass was a passport. After a civilian got the official nod to enter the fortress of fun, there was no place to sit as the visitors had expectedly outnumbered the passes. And finding nowhere to sit, the audience inched closer to the stage where their pop sensation Jazzy B was on musical rampage. Among them were also some press photographers who wanted a closer shot. But it was too close for the comfort of the jawans and they started shooing-off the guests with sticks. And caught in the act were the media persons who were verbally abused by the men on duty. One of photographers with The Tribune was even manhandled by the person claiming to be the security in-charge of the function. This miffed the photojournalists present at the venue and they even made the personnel apologise to the photographer. If this was not enough, the hot-headed armymen beat up one of their own jawans saying he was trying to pickpocket someone. In the altercation, the jawan’s turban fell off. The incident, as such, led to a huge uproar among the visitors who started condemning the action. Then, a teenager alleged that he too was beaten by the jawans and a sum of Rs 500 was extracted from him since he was accused of breaking a chair at the venue. This too led to a commotion among the audience who forgot the skimpily-clad dancer performing on the stage and converged on to the armymen for clarifications. And as this whole scene was being enacted, four journalists found their mobile phones missing. One of the journalists quipped that a public rally was safer than a function organised by the army. Officials with the other co-organiser, ETC Punjabi, were seen constantly apologising for the ruckus and showing their helplessness in doing anything. Sources said 8000 chairs were placed for the function and ETC Punjabi was allotted 2000 of them, Army officers and their families were given 2000 chairs and the rest 4000 were reserved for other army personnel. But sources added that things didn’t go as planned and over 10,000 people entered the venue. Meanwhile, the organisers said that though they had not invited any civil official to the function, many, up to the rank of ADMs, turned up and started demanding front row seats which the security personnel could not oblige. But the bottom line is that the guests and the journalists were formally invited to the function, but the armymen ended up treating them as a nuisance. |
Police cracks three murder cases, 3 held
Kapurthala, December 28 Talking to media persons, Mr Paramjit Singh Gill, the DIG, Jalandhr Range, revealed that investigations into the mysterious disappearance of Rawail Singh, a resident of Tandi village in Bholath subdivision of Kapurthala, in March 2004 led the district police to expose the killings of Mohinder Singh and his son Gurtaj Singh, both the residents of Tanda Ramsahai under Mukerian police station. According to the DIG, Joginder Singh, the father of Rawail Singh, informed the Bholath police in April 2004 about the sudden disappearance of his son in March that year. To detect the case, a special team was constituted, Mr Gill added. After investigations, the police was able to crack the case with the arrest of Kuldeep Kaur, the wife of Rawail Singh, Paramjit Kaur, a resident of Tanda Ramsahai, and Daljit Singh, a resident of Terkian village in Hoshiarpur district, said the DIG. The interrogation of the accused revealed that the trio killed Rawail Singh on March 19, 2004, at the instance of Kuldeep Kaur, who wanted to get rid of her husband, as he used to object on her character. Kuldeep Kaur took her friend and a distant relative Paramjit Kaur into confidence. Paramjit Kaur promised Kuldeep Kaur of eliminating Rawail Singh the way she managed to kill her husband Gurtaj Singh and his father Mahinder Singh with the help of her paramour Daljit Singh. On March 18, 2004, Rawail Singh and her wife left for Tanda Ramsahai to attend a party. The next day, Daljit took Rawail Singh to somewhere and got him drunk. Daljit then took Rawail to the canal bank at Uchhi Bassi, where Rawail was shot and thrown into the flowing canal, the DIG said, adding that the conduct of Kuldeep Kaur after the incident raised the suspicion in the minds of Joginder Singh and other family members. On interrogation, the accused admitted of committing two other murders. Daljit murdered Paramjit Kaur’s father-in-law, who was his maternal uncle, the same way on the same spot in March 1997. Daljit stayed at Paramjit’s house for seven years, during which he developed illicit relations with her. Mohinder Singh used to object on this. So, the duo planned to kill him, said Mr Gill. Similarly, Gurtaj, the husband of Paramjit Kaur, was eliminated by Daljit in April 1999, after which Paramjit Kaur lodged a complaint with the Mukerian police station on May 6 that her husband had been missing since he had left for 300 years’ celebrations at Anandpur Sahib, said the DIG. Within one year after the murder of her husband, Paramjit Kaur and Daljit got married in court, Mr Gill said. |
One suspected polio case, revamp operation launched
Phagwara, December 28 The girl, Khushi, daughter of a labourer, was first admitted to a private hospital in Phagwara with fever. She was yesterday shifted to CMC, Ludhiana, after she was detected with AFP, one of the symptoms of polio, sources said. When contacted today, Dr Yash Mitra, SMO, Civil Hospital, Phagwara, refused to confirm it as a polio case and said the process of its confirmation would take long time. Besides, hardly one per cent cases of AFP tested positive for polio, he claimed. Corroborating his views, Dr Inderjit Singh Ahuja, District Vaccination Officer, said earlier too six children were detected to be suffering from AFP in the district but their stool test reports did not confirm these to be polio cases. In Khushi’s case too, anything could be said only after the report of her stool test, they said. The stool samples were being sent to Central Research Institute, Kasauli, to confirm if it was a polio case, Dr Mitra said. According to Dr Mitra, as per the WHO’s direction, an emergency polio revamp operation and surveillance was launched yesterday itself in and around the Subhash Nagar locality for administering additional polio drops to 0-5 age group children. Around 500 children were being administered the polio drops in the cluster of houses around the home of Khushi, he said, adding that it was mandatory to administer polio drops to children in the cluster of houses from where an AFP case was reported. It may be mentioned here that the authorities were forced to undertake an immunisation drive on December 11 in seven districts within the radius of 40 km after the detection of a suspected case of polio in Ludhiana earlier this month. |
Leadership not serious about turban issue, says British Sikh Council
Jalandhar, December 28 The members met Jathedar Akal Takht Joginder Sigh Vedanti and submitted to him a memorandum calling on him to take up the issue. The special representative of the Sikhs from France, Mr Pal Singh, and the president of the British Sikh Council, Mr Kulwant Singh Dhesi, said this while addressing media persons here. The members said that the turban issue had been described as a complex interplay of factors by the United Nations Organisation (UNO) and it was not a mere religious issue of the community. In the “absence” of serious efforts in this regard by the Government of India, the French Sikhs were feeling helpless, the Council members said. The members lamented that the Prime Minister of the country had failed to take up the issue effectively despite his assurances. The Akalis, too, had decided to take out a white paper on the issue. but over a year had passed and the white paper had not been issued so far. The members also termed “unfortunate” that France, historically the greatest champion of human rights, was curbing the rights of the members of the Sikh community. Mr Pal Singh appealed to the Prime Minister to take up the matter with the French Government and raise the issue in Parliament also. The effort on part of the Indian Government was necessary, as the French Government did not know how to resolve the issue on its own. “The fact that the Prime Minister of India is a turbaned Sikh and has even visited France highlights that French people do not require any more counselling on who a turbaned Sikh is,” he added. |
