Pak girl sent back home Jalandhar, December 26 The teenaged girl, who was lodged in the Gandhi Vaneeta Ashram on the Kapurthala Road, was released here early this morning following the orders issued by the Home Ministry in this regard. Eager to meet her family once again and carrying back home memories of her new friends she had found here, Farah Masih returned to her home in Kotli Bare Khan village in Narowal district of Pakistan. Talking to media persons here, she said her mother had scolded her when she had expressed her desire to study. Her mother told her that it was not her age to “hold books but to hold the broom” instead and take care of her family. Disillusioned and disturbed, Farah had wandered off to the border. “I was torn apart between my desire and my sense of loss of purpose following what my mother had told me. The state of disarray and disillusion led me to lose sense of where my feet were taking me,” she said. She was released with a special police party of the Jalandhar police. She is among the children who are being let off after special instructions from the Union Government (Ministry of Home) as part of the special confidence-building measures between the two countries. Farah said it felt like home here and if her family could have been here, she would have felt no difference. She thanked her Indian friends, who gave her paranthas for the journey back home and sent her back home with all the love and care from their hearts. She expressed her desire to return to meet her new friends and teachers at the Ashram, where she had lived since she crossed the border. She thanked her teachers for teaching her many things and making her wiser. Her desire to study too was fulfilled to some extent thanks to their guidance, she said. She added that she hoped to continue her studies further once she went back home. She was taken into custody from Dera Baba Nanak sector by the BSF and was later sent into the custody of the Punjab police after the preliminary investigations. She was then sent to the Gandhi Vanita Ashram following the court’s order. Her hopes of going back home rose as she was sent to Amritsar for identification in the last week of March last year. |
Exporters seek CM’s intervention Phagwara, December 26 In a joint statement issued here, they claimed that the diesel engine industry, in particular, was located in villages and small towns of the state, producing more than 30 per cent for export and bringing large amount of foreign exchange for the country. They rued that the newly-implemented VAT system had many anomalies. These were later taken up by the high-powered state-level VAT Committee, comprising Mr Surinder Singla, Finance Minister Punjab and Chairman, Mr Avtar Henry, Cabinet Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, and Punjab Excise and Taxation Minister Sardul Singh, they said. They disclosed that the Committee had invited representatives of the industry and the trade to know the problems being faced by the sectors. The Committee, during its last meeting held on November 21 and 22, had decided to give relief to these sections by way of simplifying the procedures and reducing the VAT rate on items like diesel engines, valves and clocks and auto parts among others, and recommended it to the Cabinet for final orders. They regretted that a notification in this regard was still to be issued. |
