PAU shifts focus to organic farming
Ludhiana, December 2 Principal Investigator of the two schemes is Dr M.S. Gill. He said aim of both projects was to grow healthy food at less cost and without causing further damage to resources. Organic farming is getting attention due to health consequences of pesticide residues in foods and damage by conventional farm practices to environment air, water, soil. The concept of organic farming is to use bio-based inputs instead of synthetic chemical-based man-made resources (fertilizers, plant production chemicals) and preserving soil and water. Precision farming in agriculture sector is aimed at evolving strategies for precise or calibrated application of inputs to reduce cost of cultivation and increase profitability. Organic
farming project is for three-years costing Rs 20.89 lakh. Dr Gill said a project on organic farming was being implemented in collaboration with Departments of Entomology, Soil Science, Plant Pathology and Food Science and Technology. “We have undertaken following experiments under the organic farming project: One management of soil fertility in basmati-maize-wheat cropping cycles, two comparative of organic, chemical and integrated nutrient management on soil health and crop productivity in different cropping systems, three pest management in rice-wheat cycle under organic farming and four effect of organic, inorganic sources of nutrition on soil health and fodder production.” The precision farming concept is stated to save on resources, including scarce water and apply variable rates of seed, fertilizers, sprays of chemicals etc. Corresponding to soil condition and plant or crop needs and requirements. Dr Gill said Geographical Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) are also part of broader precision farming system to increase farm productivity and profitability. |
Internal assessment
marks to be reduced
Ludhiana, December 2 More than 85 per cent students in MCom were getting 48-50 marks out of 50 in the internal assessment. As per data available with the university, there was a lot of variation in marks in the terminal examination and internal assessment of the students. Many students, who got 48 marks out of 50 in internal assessment, had to face compartment in terminal examinations. In December, 2004, 493 students in MCom I (first semester) had appeared and analysis found that 85.76 per cent of students got more than 80 per cent marks. Instances were there when all appearing candidates were given more than 46 marks (out of 50) in all subjects. One of the members of the Faculty of Business Management and Commerce said the issue was raised during the Syndicate meeting held recently and clarification sought on certain points. At present, only Panjab University and its affiliated colleges (approximately 17) were getting 50 per cent weightage (internal assessment) in MCom. Punjabi University was giving 20 per cent weightage, Guru Nanak Dev University campus students were being given 40 per cent weightage and college students were being given 20 per cent weightage. The member said, “Degrees will lose their importance if marks are awarded like this.
