Man undergoes rare hip surgery
Mohali, December 2 Dr Harinder Batth, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, said at a press conference here today that a complex surgical repair of hip joint of Mr Karam Singh was carried out. Initially, the destroyed hip joint was reconstructed using the patients’s own bone and later revision hip surgery was done with hip joint replacement. The patient was now able to move about with the help of walker and would be able to walk with the help of a stick in about eight weeks time. He said Mr Karam Singh had sustained a hip fracture about two years ago. He underwent the first surgery in Chandigarh which failed and as such he remained bed-ridden for a long time. |

Playing tennis on wheelchair
Chandigarh, December 2 The sport is recognised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the All-India Tennis Association
(AITA) . Tomorrow is World Disabled Day also. The championship was inaugurated by Mr Satish Chandra, IAS officer. Pawan Kapoor and Amitabh Chandel, both international tennis players, were instrumental in motivating the players to participate in the championship. Three quarter-final matches were played today. The toughest match of the day was played between Rajiv Virat and Amit Manga. They held their serves till the score of 7-7 but in the tie break it was Amit who won 7-5. The second match was played between Ravi Mathur and Tej Bhan Vashisht in which Ravi prevailed over Tej Bhan, wining the match 8-5. The third match was played between Raajesh Ranal and the second seed Jagdish Meena. Meena was upset by Rajesh at 8-2. Pradeep Lal (56) has been a paraplegic since 1974. He took to wheel chair tennis in 1994 when it was first introduced in Delhi. He has represented India at Japan Open in 1994, World Cup- Melbourne in 1996 and Thai Open in 1998. The youngest of the lot Rajiv Virat at 25 has been afflicted with multiple sclerosis since the age of 19 and has been playing tennis with Pradeep Lal in Delhi. He recently won the Hutch Delhi Half Marathon (wheel chair category). Amit Manga (30) has ‘syringomyelia, a neurological condition since 1994 and is on the wheelchair since 2000. Despite this handicap, Amit manages his own office in Net trading. He, too, took part in the recently held Delhi Half Marathon and has been playing wheelchair tennis since the past few years.
Raajesh Ranal (30) is afflicted with polio since childhood. He has been playing tennis for the past year and has been recipient of a gold medal in discus throw at the Delhi state level. Jagdish Meena (45) had to left leg amputated following diabetes. He is with Northern Railway and playing since 1996.He also participated in the Thai Open Wheel Chair Tournament in 1998. Ravi Mathur (47) was paralysed due to a gunshot injury in the spine while chasing chain snatchers two years ago in Delhi. A freelance photographer, he has a diploma in physical education from Nagpur University . Tej Bhan Vashisht, (42) has bilateral amputer below the knee. He was been playing wheelchair tennis for the past one year. |
GC-42 win team championship
Chandigarh, December 2 Jyoti broke three state records in snatch (under 45-55 kg) clean and jerk (under 62.5 -70 kg) and total 107.5-125 kg category. However, the team championship was won by Government College, Sector 42, by securing

Rural sports meet
Mohali, December 2 Jeeva Singh of Bhagomajra finished second while Mohinder Singh of Moujpur remained third in the race. In the open kabaddi event (55 kg) the team of Mahila Chowk got the better of Batthan whereas in 60 kg category, Baba Janki Dass Kabaddi Club, Bolomajra, won the top honours.
