Rallies, camps mark World AIDS Day
Ludhiana, December 1
Health check-up and blood donation camps, awareness lectures marked the World AIDS Day in the city today. A team of doctors from the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Model Hospital, along with members of the District Red Cross Society, conducted a health check-up camp for employees at United Breweries Limited in Focal Point. A blood donation camp was also organised at this occasion. Thirtyfive units of blood was collected.

Sale of woollens at peak

Contrary to the general impression that the onset of winter has been delayed a bit this time, the mood in woollen industry here is upbeat. It seems as if the woollen makers have learnt to adjust with the changing climatic conditions in the region. They stagger their manufacturing operations in a most planned manner to avoid piling of stocks at their premises.

Mr Simranjit Singh Maan, president SAD (Amritsar), has accused the Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh and former CM Parkash Singh Badal of exploiting the religious sentiments of Hindus and Sikhs for capturing power. He urged leaders of various political parties to launch a crusade against the communal exploitation of the people of the state so that the peace was preserved.

Khalsa Dal welcomes World Sikh Convention

The President of Shiromani Khalsa Dal, Mr Daijit Singh, in a statement here today has welcomed the decision of the Damdami Taksal to call a World Sikh Convention in the month of February 2006, at Fatehgarh Sahib and described it as a timely decision.

No clue to girl’s disappearance

The Sudhar police has received no clue to the disappearance of a minor girl of Akalgarh village in Ludhiana district who had been missing since Monday last. As the girl was last seen at her school at Baddowal, the complainant has now been advised to lodge a complaint at Sadar Police Station, Ludhiana.

Body donated as per deceased’s wishes

“When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die. But there are people who contribute even after they cease to survive.” One such person was Mukhtiar Singh of Daudar village in Moga district. After his journey in this world came to an end, he bade adieu with a virtue. He donated his eyes to brighten those living in dark and his body to the Christian Medical College and Hospital here.

Burglars broke into a garments shop on the Vrindivan road, owned by a former Chairman of the legal cell of the PPCC, last night and decamped with clothes worth over Rs 2 lakh.

Couple dies in mishap

A couple was killed in a bus-car collision on the Ludhiana-Ferozepore road near Gurusar Kounke. The local police has registered a case under Sections 279, 304-A, 427, IPC.

PNB disburses Rs 65 crore as loan
Ludhiana, December 1
Punjab National Bank disbursed loans to the tune of Rs 65 crore at a loan distribution function held here today. Mr I.D. Singh, General Manager, PNB, Punjab zone, while addressing beneficiaries said the bank’s deposits as on September 30, 2005 stood at Rs 14,012 cr whereas its advances were nearly Rs 6,100 cr.

Recycle wheat, paddy straw: farm experts
Ludhiana, December 1
Experts in Punjab Agricultural University here have again warned against the burning of wheat and rice straw. They say, it contributes as much to soil ‘sickness’ and loss of ‘fertility’ as to air pollution. Punjab produces 23 million tonnes of rice straw and 17 million tonnes of wheat straw, annually. This straw is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium also called as NPK.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Samrala, organised a seed production camp for wheat (PBW-502) under the seed village scheme at Heian village yesterday. About 25 progressive farmers attended the camp.

Symphony of students’ creativity

Symphony 2005, a cultural programme, was jointly put up by the Music and Fashion Departments of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School last evening. Its aim was to showcase talent and creativity of students. The chief guest was Mr V.K. Gupta, Assistant Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, while the guest of honour was Mr J.K. Thakkar AGM, State Bank of India. The show began with the lighting of a lamp by the chief guest followed by fusion of melodies, a show put up by the music department.

Students display cooking skills at contest
Ludhiana, December 1
Students of BCM Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh road, tried their cooking skills in a competition held at the school here today. Students of class VI participated in the competition wherein they had to make dishes using curd while class VII students participated in sandwich-making competition. Students of classes VIII, IX, and XI participated in making of soups and desserts. Winners were awarded by the Principal, Mr S.D. Kalia.

250 special kids have a day out

A trip was organised for more than 250 disabled students from different special schools to a theme park, Hardy’s World, to mark “Disability Week”, here today. Students were drawn from special schools for physically and mentally challenged students like Ek-Prayaas, Darpan, Vocational Rehabilitation Training Centre, Bharat Vikas Parishad, Aashirwad, Deaf and Dumb School, and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

600 students take part in athletics meet

The XIVth edition of the Ludhiana Sahodaya Schools Complex Athletics Meet began at the GGN Public School, Rose Garden, here today. Around 600 participants (boys and girls) drawn from 26 schools of the complex are taking part in this meet in which total 261 medals are at stake.

Softball trials

Trials to select the Ludhiana softball teams (boys and girls) will be conducted here at the Ramgarhia Educational Complex, Miller Ganj, on December 18 at 11 am onwards. This was stated by Mr P.N. Passi, honorary secretary, Punjab Softball Association.
