Recycle wheat, paddy straw: farm experts
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, December 1
Experts in Punjab Agricultural University here have again warned against the burning of wheat and rice straw.
They say, it contributes as much to soil ‘sickness’ and loss of ‘fertility’ as to air pollution. Punjab produces 23 million tonnes of rice straw and 17 million tonnes of wheat straw, annually. This straw is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium also called as NPK.

In case it is not burnt and instead recycled 8 lakh tonnes of NPK would become available to the soil. This is about 50 per cent of the fertilizer consumption in the state. “Considering that 90 per cent of rice straw and 30 per cent of wheat straw is available to recycle, it would tantamount to re-cycling of over five lakh tonnes of nutrients valued at Rs 400 crore”.

The experts pointed out, when Punjab talks of exporting rice it means “exporting” water, as the crop(the paddy) consumes lot of water. The alarming situation of exploitation of groundwater is evident from the fact that 100 blocks out of 141 are categorised “dark” in the central districts of Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Sangrur and Moga, where water table is declining at the rate of 54 cm per year. At 75 cm per year, this fall was steep in 2004-05.

According to Dr G.S. Hira, Head of the Department of Soils and Additional Director, Agricultural Research in PAU, “it is estimated that at this rate of exploitation, underground water will touch 70 ft to 160 ft in 66 per cent area in these districts by 2023”.

Already, area having water table below 30 feet depth in these districts has increased from 3 per cent in 1973 to 95 per cent in 2005. in fact, watertable is falling in 90 per cent area in the state, he said.

Punjab has about 11 lakh tubewells, out of which 9 lakh are electricity-operated. Due to rapidly falling watertable, farmers are replacing centrifugal pumps with submersible pumps at an estimated cost of Rs 2,300 crore. Since the submersible pumps consume more power, consequently, energy requirement was up by 20 per cent in 2001-05.

Scarcity of sweet water is forcing farmers to tap “deep saline water” in the south-west districts, where in 40 per cent area underground water is already saline and only marginally fit for irrigation or human consumption. Use of this saline water for irrigation will further make the soil ‘sick’.

Moreover, with watertable going deeper in north-east districts and with groundwater flow towards south-west districts, the saline water would flow backward to north-east districts.

This would only worsen the situation. Discharge of untreated industrial effluents, domestic and sewerage water is also a disturbing factor to ‘soil sickness and pollution of under groundwater. Presence of harmful chemicals in food due to this is already matter of concern.
