Car dealer’s son rescued from Sector 16 house
Two kidnappers held with weapons

Chandigarh, November 20
The police today claimed to have solved the kidnapping case of Nikhil Joshi, son of car dealer Deepak Joshi, with the recovery of the boy and the arrest of two of the alleged kidnappers. Some arms were also seized.

Tata Consultancy to get 20 acres, Wipro 40
Mohali, November 20
The Punjab Government has demarcated at least 20 acres for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and another 40 acres for Wipro in Industrial Area, Phase VIII- A and B, here. The two companies plan to set up their software development centres in Mohali soon.

With a view to ensuring harmonious and balanced development of the city, the UT Administrator, Gen S.F. Rodrigues (Retd), yesterday announced the re-modelling of Mani Majra as an independent modern township by upgrading the existing infrastructural support facilities through innovative processes.

Heavy rush, chaos mark CAT examination
Chandigarh, November 20
Around 8000 students from the region took the Common Admission Test (CAT) across seven centers in the city today. The CAT exam is for students aspiring to seek admission to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other MBA courses in the country. There was a heavy rush and chaos at the centres as students came in not only from the city but also from the sates of Punjab, Himachal, J&K and Haryana. Like last year this year too there was a surprise element in the paper.
For one, the number of questions was just 90 compared to 123 last year and 150 questions the year before. However, according to the students the level of difficulty was much greater this year.

Owner of Hot Millions dies of cancer
Chandigarh, November 20
Hundreds of people from all walks of life bade adieu to Col Anant Bir Singh at the Sector 25 crematorium here today. The driving force behind the Hot Millions chain of fast food outlets, Colonel Singh died of liver cancer this morning after grappling with the disease for around two months.

Col Anant Bir Singh will always be remembered as the man who introduced fast food to the city. It was way back in 1979 when after seeking premature retirement, this Signals officer took over the “Yankee Doodle” ice cream parlour in Sector 17 and relaunched it as “Hot Millions” with the help of his wife Harinder Mohini.

Conference highlights works of Pierre Jeanneret

The fond memories of Chandigarh got revived at a daylong international conference organised by the Embassy of Switzerland, New Delhi and the Saakaar Foundation of Chandigarh at the Panjab University campus today. The conference highlighting the “life and works of Pierre Jeanneret” was a homage and tribute to designer associate of Chandigarh-Pierre Jeanneret.

MC may extend sanitation contract
Mohali, November 20
The Municipal Council has proposed to extend the contract for sanitation work by one month. The issue will be discussed at the last monthly meeting of the elected body scheduled to be held on November 21 in the newly-constructed building of the civic body.

Major fire at beauty parlour
Panchkula, November 20
Goods worth lakhs were destroyed in a fire at a beauty parlour in a Sector 4 showroom here this morning. The fire was sparked off when an electric diya in the parlour burst and inflammable cosmetics in the parlour caught fire.

Hundreds attend Lord Jagannath’s rath yatra
Panchkula, November 20
Hundreds of devotees of Lord Jagannath participated in the rath yatra organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) today. These devotees, including women and children, sang hymns in praise of Lord Jagannath as they passed through various parts of the township. The yatra began from NAC, Mani Majra, around 2 pm. Devotees pulled the rath, which carried idols of Lord Jagannath, Baladev and Devi Subhadra. The yatra began after the deities were offered 56 bhog. After the bhog offering ceremony, aarti was performed by citizens and dignitaries, who had joined in the yatra.

City residents just spend 40 minutes on reading per day compared to 1 hour 55 minutes by Delhi-i-tes, 2 hours 5 minutes in Chennai, and 2 hours 15 minutes in Kolkata Mr Sushant Banerjee, manager, British Library, said while speaking on the role of library in learning and development on the concluding day of a three-day symposium on education and learning organised by EduCARE India and the Centre for Adult, Continuing Education & Extension (CACEE) of Panjab University, here on Friday.

Mobile phones, cash stolen
Chandigarh, November 20
Thieves decamped with mobile phones and cash worth about Rs 15 lakh from a Sector 22-B shop last night. The theft came to light when the owner of the shop, Mr Varinder, came to open the shop around 9.30 a.m. today. The iron shutters and wooden doors of the shops were found broken.

2 PU teachers on Indian physics panel

Two teachers of the Department of Physics, Panjab University, have been elected to the national body of the physicists, Indian Physics Association, (IPA), for 2005-07. Dr K.P. Singh has been elected vice-president of the association and Dr Rajeev Puri has been elected to represent the north zone comprising seven states.

Experts discuss obesity

A national symposium on “Emerging epidemic of obesity and related cardiovascular problems in India” was organised today at the PGI under the auspices of the National Academy of the Medical Sciences. The symposium was the first of its kind, as it was relayed live to India Gandhi Medical College, Shimla, where about 50 participants interacted with the speakers at the PGI.

The Department of Immunopathology will organise the 32nd annual national conference of Indian Immunology Society at the PGI from November 24 to 27.IMMCON 2005 will see 300-400 scientists, including basic and clinical immunologists, from all over India and abroad converging at PGI to deliberate on the latest research developments in the major areas of this science.

Talk on emergency contraceptives

The local branch of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), organised an awareness programme on “Improving access to emergency contraception” for the community on Friday on the premises of branch office. It was attended by 50 participants comprising local voluntary groups, representative from NGOs, youth volunteers and paramedical staff from the District Health authorities. Mrs Usha Singla, honorary secretary, FPAI, panchkula branch, presided over the programme.

Hospital violates pollution norms
Mohali, November 20
An official of the Punjab Pollution Control Board yesterday found biomedical waste dumped unauthorisedly in a garbage bin of the local Civil Hospital. Mr A.K. Sharma, SDO of the board, who inspected the hospital, said though there had been a marked improvement in the hospital from the environmental aspect since his last visit about two months ago, the presence of the biomedical waste in the garbage had nullified this impression.

HIV patients seek free basic medicare
Panchkula, November 20
The HIV positive persons are demanding free basic medicare and the setting up of specialised homes to look after AIDS patients. As many as 30 HIV positive persons from all over Haryana today began their march from here to New Delhi, they said they would meet the President of India, on December 1, and put forth their demands.

Ayurvedic check-up camp for women

A free ayurvedic health check-up camp for women was today organised at Dabur Dhanwantry Hospital, Sector 46 by Dabur India. The camp was inaugurated by Dr Indu Prabhakar. As many as 210 patients were given free consultation while 132 patients availed the facility of free ultrasonography and free laboratory investigations.
