2 PU teachers on Indian physics panel
Chandigarh, November 20 Dr Rajeev Puri is serving as a reader in physics and has been on the national body for the past six years. He is a post-doctorate from the international institute of physics, Tuebingen, Germany, and also from Ecole des Mines, Nantes, France. An eminent nuclear scientist, he is a double national award winner in the field of research in nuclear physics — young scientist research award and Satyamurthy award — for excellent research in nuclear physics. He has also been nominated for about six awards in India and abroad, including Bhatnagar Award, Birla Prize, Swaranjayanti prize. Dr Puri is author of about 200 research publications of journals and conferences. Dr K. P. Singh is serving as a Reader in the Department of Physics, Panjab University. He was also elected in the last election of IPA for the post of vice-president for 2003-05. Dr K.P. Singh has done his PhD from Panjab University. He has worked in the field of experimental nuclear physics at Tandem Accelerator Laboratory, Uppsala University, Sweden, Heavy Ion Laboratory, University of Warsaw, Poland, Nuclear Science Centre, New Delhi, Variable Energy Cyclotron, Kolkata, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar and Chandigarh Cyclotron. He is working in the field of particle induced X-ray emission, and irradiation effects on the properties of polymers and other materials. His research papers have been published in international journals on these topics. |
Prabhat Natyotsav —
a big draw
The 15th Prabhat Memorial Natyotsav-2005 emerged as a popular event in performing arts with 27 teams from schools and colleges contesting in theatre and eight in the skit and histrionics category.
The annual natyotsav is organised by a society of performing arts, Sambhang, in memory of young thespian Prabhat Gupta, an alumnus of the Department of Indian Theatre, Panjab University in whose honour the university had instituted a gold medal. Inaugurating the natyotsav, at the auditorium of the Government College for Girls today, AK Malhotra General Manger, CITCO, paid tributes to Prabhat, who made supreme sacrifice to save the life of a child unknown to him. The theme of most of the plays staged today was structured to project socio- political issues, degeneration of moral values and promote love, amity and patriotism among the credulous masses. Though young performing artistes, especially from schools, lacked proper conceptual grasp of plays like “Ashad ka Ek Din, they made enthusiastic attempts to infuse life into the characters they portrayed. However, the second session in the college category witnessed a close contest in overall aesthetic potential and technical backup. Mrs Usha Nair, DGM, State Bank of India, Punjab and Chandigarh, lauded the efforts of the Sambhang chairman, Dr S. Gupt. The panel of judges, led by acclaimed film personality Surinder Sharma, included Dr Navjot Kaur and Upendra Bhatnagar. The following are the winners in the school category. The Sambhang running trophy for schools was bagged by Mount Carmal —47 team for brilliant performance in “Shaheed ki Wapsi” directed by Yogesh Arora. “Chidiyan da Chamba” by Governmnet Model High School, PGI, won the second slot while Stepping Stones bagged the third place for Surinder Sharma’s classic play “Samajhdar Log”. Best actor -Himanshu (GMSSS-16), second best actor Manish Gupta (Stepping Stones —38) and Lalit (GMSSS-19). Best actress Ajita (GGSSS-23), second best actress- Kanchan (GMHS-PGI) and Karishma (Golden Bells School Mohali). The GGS College for Women won the coveted Sambhang running trophy in the senior category for their play “Zindagi” while Government College, Sector 42, and GCG -46 bagged the second and third slots, respectively. The best actress positions were won by Surjit Kaur (GCG-42), Ritu Bawa (GGS College for Women-26) and Natasha (MCM DAV-36). The winners in skit were Dev Samaj College -36, Divshikha Gurukul Dera Bassi, and MCM DAV College -36 while Namish Jain, Amandeep and Vasundra of these institutions won individual prizes. The only prize in histrionics went to Shikha Choudhry of MCM DAV College. Earlier, Principals — Dr Puneet Bedi, MCM DAV College, Dr Kuldip Singh, SGGS College, Dr V.P. Paul, CL DAV School, Ms Amita Khorana Shishu Niketan, and Mr Ram Kumar, GSSS-16, were honoured. The annual Sambhang award was conferred on Ravinder Choudhry. |
Arjun Singh to open CBSE building today

Chandigarh, November 20 The six-storey building of the CBSE, spread over 1.5 acre, has a state-of-the-art conference and seminar hall, a central call system, an underground parking area and an automatic fire alarm system. Designed to be quake-resistant, the building is equipped to harvest rainwater and has a solar light system as well. With the new building ready for occupancy, the regional office of the CBSE, operating from Sector 32 and a store in Ram Darbar of Industrial Area, will be shifted to Panchkula. Honoured: A prize distribution function to honour teachers was held at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 38 W, here today.Organised by the Bharat Vikas Parishad, 18 teachers of the school were awarded for showing 100 per cent result in the examination held in March, 2005. A cultural programme was staged during the function. School Principal Karam Chand and president of the Bharat Vikas Parishad D.D. Gupta stressed the need to inculcate moral values among students. Teachers honoured by the parishad included Karam Chand, Gurmuhk Singh, Vishwa Nath, Harjinder Kaur, Sewa Singh, Piara Singh, Madhu, Amrit Kaur, Harnit Kaur, Parveen Kumar, K.P. Singh, Renu, Rajbir Kaur, Jaspal Kaur, Sonia, Poonam Dhingra, Devinder Singh and Dalvinder Kaur. Seminar held: As many as 300 parents attended a seminar on “Art of parenting” organised at Shishu Niketan Public School, Mansa Devi Complex, by HDFC Life Insurance, here today.Psychologists and consultants gave lectures on ways to improving child behaviour and inculcate discipline. Condemning corporal punishment, the experts were of the view that it made the child rigid and resort to telling lies. Stating that a child should get at least 10 hours of undisturbed sleep, they urged parents to be role models for children instead of imposing rules on them. Ways to tackling stress were also highlighted. An open house marked the conclusion of the programme. |
230 students get scholarships
Panchkula, November 20 The Shivalik Foundation- a charitable society formed by retired government employees for service to poor, celebrates its annual day each year wherein scholarships, stationery and woollens are distributed to poor students, and physically challenged students of Saket High School, Chandi Mandir. The foundation also runs a sewing centre for girls at Haripur, and an elementary school for street children. The chief guest in today’s function was Mr S L Mittal, former Chief Engineer, PWD, Haryana., while Mr Sham Lal Bansal, General Manager of Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC). Other than giving scholarships amounting to 1. 25 lakh, the foundation members also gave financial help of Rs 27,000 to 28 brilliant students of government schools here. The foundation also announced that they were distributing over 300 pullovers to students of government primary schools. Mr Subhash Bansal, general secretary of the foundation, said the idea behind organising the annual day was to have an interaction between members, and discuss on further social activities that could be initiated. Earlier, a cultural programme by students of DC Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 7, and folk song recital by students of Saket School regaled the audience. |

Chandigarh, November 20 A cultural show was the highlight of the programme. Bhangra, giddha and boliyan were a hit with the crowd. Rajasthani and Haryanavi dances were also presented. Students presented a salsa dance. A medley, mono acting and songs were among other items presented on the occasion. A prize distribution function was also held. A total of 10 awards were given away. These included the academic excellence award which went to Shikha Sharma. Mentor of the year award went to Mr Parminder Singh while six awards for creativity were also given. |
