Children pay tributes to Nehru on their day

Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 14
The birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was celebrated at various educational institutes of the town and surrounding villages today. The students and staff of MGMN Senior Secondary School, Lal Bahadur Shastri Public School and Janta College for Women held a joint celebration at Gandhi School. Mr Mangat Ram Jain, president of the Ahmedgarh Vidya Parcharak Sabha, presided over the function.

Besides traditional athletic events, a cultural programme was organised. Bhangra, giddha, songs, skits and poems impressed the audience. A cricket match between two teams of girl students had office-bearers of the management committee announcing to launch a sports wing for girls.

Mr Vijay Kakria, Mr Amrit Lal and Mr Surinder Tayal gave away prizes to the winners. Mr Pardeep Sharda, Principal, thanked the office-bearers of the sabha for encouraging the participants.

Similar functions were organised at DAV High School, Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Kennedy Public High School, Anand Isher Senior Secondary School, Guru Nanak Kanya Maha Vidyalya Senior Secondary School and Government Senior Secondary Schools in Dehlon, Nathumajra and Kanganwal villages.

Ludhiana: Children’s Day celebrations were galore in city schools. At BCM School, Chandigarh Road, a function to mark the day was presided over by Mr B.D. Arora, a senior advocate. Little angels of Nursery and LKG participated in a fancy dress competition. Students of UKG displayed their skill in clay modelling.

Competitions in drawing and painting (ClassI to III) and flower arrangement (Class IV to V) were organised. Besides, junior wing children presented songs and dances. Mr Arora gave away prizes to the winners.

The students of LKG to Class II at Atam Public Senior Secondary School organised a fete. Various stalls of eatables and fun games attracted students.

A poem-recitation competition was held for students of Class X and XI whereas students of Class VI and VII participated in a declamation contest. On-the-spot painting and rangoli competitions were also organised.

A multi-faceted programme, Parichay, was organised at Kundan Vidya Mandir.

A variety show was organised at GNI Public School to mark the birthday of Chacha Nehru. Students of primary and senior sections regaled the audience with their songs. A choreography item and a skit were liked by the students.

Students of middle, high and senior secondary classes of New Senior Secondary School highlighted the works of Pandit Nehru.

Some senior classes organised cricket matches. An art and craft exhibition was also organised .

Gurpurb, Children’s Day and annual prize distribution was celebrated at Sant Kartar Singh Kamaliwale Education Institute here. Prizes were presented to the achievers in academics and sports. Harvinder was declared chess champion. The students threw light on Pandit Nehru’s and Guru Nanak Dev's life.

At Maharaja Ranjit Singh Police Public School, poems, speeches, skits and group songs were presented by the students.

Tiny tots of Kiddies Paradise participated in a fancy-dress competition. They came dressed as great people like Pandit Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Annie Basent. The students presented a skit that highlighted freedom struggle.

Students of Baba Isher Singh (N) Senior Secondary Public School held a fancy-dress competition. Fiftytwo students from nursery to Class X participated in the competition. The students also presented giddha and bhangra.

Everest Public Senior Secondary School held a joint celebration to mark Gurpurb and Children’s Day. The students presented patriotic songs. They delivered speeches on the life and achievements of Pandit Nehru.

Students of Small Wonders showed their spirit by participating cheerfully in a fancy-dress competition. Harleen as Amritdhari won the first prize while Onkar dressed up as coolie got the second prize. Vanshika and Riya both won the third prize.

Students of BCM School, Chandigarh Road, threw light upon the life of Jawaharlal Nehru in their speeches. There were one-minute games and other fun activities for students. The winners were given prizes.

Green Land Senior Secondary Public School started the programme by paying homage to Pandit Nehru. Teachers presented a cultural programme. Mr Rudra, director of the school, was congratulated for being elected as the senior vice-president of the All-India CBSE and ICSE Independent School Federation.

Sat Paul Mittal School wore a bright and colourful look when children adorned in festive colours entered the school premises in the morning. The school organised competitions like tear and paste, thumb printing and painting. The students gave solo-dance performances. They were awarded certificates of appreciations.

The Sportking Institute of Fashion Technology took part in a cultural extravaganza to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. More than 100 participants wore stylish dresses. A style check cat walk was also organised which was started by teachers and followed by the students.

Spring Dale Senior Secondary School jointly celebrated birthday of Pandit Nehru and Guru Nanak Dev. The function started with a shabad kirtan which was followed by the paath of Sukhmani Sahib.

Students of senior classes threw light on the lives of Guru Nanak Dev and Pandit Nehru. A fancy-dress competition was also held.

Staff and students of Dr M.L. Punj Memorial Holy Heart Public School held a declamation contest to mark the day. Children spoke on the life and achievements of Pandit Nehru. Gurpreet of Class XII, Sandeep Singh and Jagjit Singh of Class VII won first, second and third prize respectively.

Students of SIPS came dressed up as fairies, jungleman, Mangal Pandey , super market etc. The students were told the significance of the day. Prizes were given to Asees Sodhi and Sift who came dressed as supermarket and as a peacock.

Green Grove School, Khanna, organised a declamation contest. The children enjoyed a cultural programme presented by the teachers.

A number of functions were organised to remember Nehru.

In a unique style the Guru Leela Samajik Inqilab Sanstha hosted a lunch for a number of slum children at a leading five star hotel. The president of the sanstha, Mr Ajay Johar, remarked that in order to bring in equality in society and particularly to the less privileged, he decided to host a lunch for the slum children at Park Plaza.

Mr Johar pointed out, not everybody is privileged to have lunch in a five star hotel and much less the slum children. He said, a group of about 20 children picked up from slum areas were treated to lunch at the buffet. He said, the children felt at ease in the five star ambience where they saw other guests also having lunch at other tables.

A function was organised at the local district Congress office which was chaired by the District Congress Committee, Ludhiana (Urban) president, Mr Jagmohan Sharma. The District Youth Congress President, Mr Dimple Rana, was also present at the function. Mr Sharma recalled the great contribution of Pandit Nehru in building modern India.

Another function was organised by the activists of the youth Congress which was addressed by the senior vice president of the Punjab Youth Congress, Mr Pawan Dewan. Mr Dewan urged the youth to follow in the footsteps of Pandit Nehru who had set India on the path of progressive development. He pointed out, it was Pandit Nehru whose vision helped India to adopt a modern and progressive approach in building up the nation free from sectarian politics.

KHANNA: Children’s Day was celebrated with fervour at Green Grove Public School here. Cakes were distributed among students. The students decorated the classrooms tastefully.

A declamation contest was held and speeches were delivered in honour of Pandit Nehru. The Principal of the school, Ms S. George, wished the students happy Children’s day.

A cultural programme was organised. The students of K G performed a dance item. Primary wing students rocked everyone with “Mambo no 5” and the students of higher classes presented a lively bhangra. Teachers presented a group song and took part in an antakshari competition, along with the students.

Students pledge to fight corruption

Ludhiana, November 14
To celebrate Children’s Day with a cause , BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, Ludhiana, observed Vigilance Awareness Day here today in memory of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel who had been instrumental in establishing administrative structure in India.

Many competitions and contests were organised to make students aware about the evils of corruption that have jammed the wheels of development progress. The day started with students taking a pledge to fight against corruption. Ms Paramjit Kaur, Principal, addressing the students highlighted the need to stop corruption. A paper reading contest on topics relevant to corruption was held.

Road show was another activity with the purpose to make the general public aware about corruption. A procession was taken out by NCC cadets and sankalp group of the school who marched on the city roads carrying placards and banners.

Quiz contest: Bharatiya Vidya Mandir, Udham Singh Nagar, organised a quiz contest on patriotic heroes for classes 1 to 10 here today on Children’s Day. The students of classes 11 & 12 participated in a ‘tug of war’. Many students delivered speeches on the life of Nehru. A community lunch was arranged by Mr Mitter Sen, president, BVM. Sweaters were distributed among 80 slum children studying in Sanskar Kendra run by the BVM Trust.

Fancy dress competition: Tiny tots of nursery and KG of BVM Shishu Vatika participated in a fancy dress competition organised here today. About 40 students participated, Ritika, Priyansh and Kanika bagged the first three prizes.

Youth fest concludes

The 47th Panjab University Youth and Heritage Festival that started on November 7 concluded on November 13.
More than 1,000 students from various colleges took part. The festival was hosted by Ramgarhia Girls College, Ludhiana.

The results of competitions held yesterday are: Folk instrument: 1st — Jaspreet Kaur (ghara) of Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana; 2nd — Mohammad Rafi (dhol) of BSSG College, Sidhsar; 3rd — Ramesh Kumar (dholak) of M.R. Govt College, Fazilka.

Folk dance: Ist — Manpreet Kaur of Dev Samaj College for Women, Ferozepore; 2nd — Kulwinder Kaur of GTB Khalsa College for Women, Dasuya; and Inderjeet Singh of GN National College, Doraha; 3rd — Sarbdeep of GGDSD College, Chandigarh, and Manjinder Singh of LRDAV College, Jagraon.

Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, won 10 positions in the 47th Inter-Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival organised from November 7 to 13.

The college won in following events: first in jhumar; first in individual category — Inderjit Singh; first in histrionics — Gurinder Singh; first in orchestra (individual category) — Ajay Pal Singh; second in pakhi making — Kamaljit Kaur; second in tabla — Ajay Pal Singh; third in drama; best actress — Maninder Kaur; third in giddha; and third in Dasuti — Jaswinder Kaur.

Declamation contest at KVM

Oratory skills at their best were witnessed today at Kundan Vidya Mandir where the Reena-Simmi Memorial Inter-school declamation contest was organised. About 22 students from schools in and around Ludhiana contested for the first, second, third and consolation prizes in English and Hindi.

A variety of topics varying from social, educational to moral, which were thought provoking, comprised the list of ideas to be expatiated upon. Karan Khangura spoke of the shift in economy, peer pressure and trendsetters in education which results in moral degradation he said to plan for a generation we need to nurture our children with moral values.

A student from Sat Paul Mittal spoke on attitudes determining the destiny proving that they help to make choices. Students cited examples of Bin Laden, LTTE etc to express their view point on ‘Pratishod Tuchh Man Walon ki Nimn Stariya Prasanta hai’ Sushant Mehan chiseled out the best examples and declaimed on Samrath ko Nahi Dosh Gosain.

Dr D.J. Singh, the chief guest was highly appreciative of the selection of topics the organisation of the function and the speakers. He highlighted the importance of quality education under the quality teachers. He paid tribute to Reena-Simmi for their immortal service to students given in the form of declamation contest which provides students a platform for developing themselves.

Poetic symposium at PAU

Addressing the audience on the occasion of a poetic recitation competition during the PAU youth festival held at Students’ Home in the university, Prof Ravinder Bhathal, general secretary, Punjabi Sahit Akademi, Ludhiana, said constructive thinking played an important role in building a healthy society.

He appreciated the efforts made by the Young Writers Association and the Youth Welfare Department for motivating students to take interest in creating qualitative literature. In his presidential address, Dr Lall Singh Brar, Director, Students Welfare, PAU, said fine arts and sciences together played an important role in the all-round development of human beings.

DLSA launches campaign for children

To awaken the society about the rights of children, the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) today launched “Save the children campaign” by organising a seminar at local Observation Home.

Adressing the seminar, District and Sessions Judge Harbans Lal said: “Children are our resource and they deserves to be nurtured and groomed with proper care, basic health and education.” He stressed the need for ensuring the welfare and development of children.

Harbans Lal expressed concern over the increasing involvement of children in smuggling of narcotics. Smugglers were using poor children as “carriers” for sending narcotics from one place to another, which needed to be curbed, he said.

Additional Sessions Judge S.P. Bangarh, Civil Judge Senior Divison S.S. Dhaliwal, Chief Judicial Magistrate K.S. Cheema and Prof Rajdeep Singh appealed to the juvenile offenders not to indulge in criminal activities after their release from the observation home.

SDM Amrit Kaur Gill, N.S. Dhaliwal, Assistant Labour Commissioner Ruby Fernandez, Papoo Abinash Singh, Dr Inderjit Dhingra, Arvind Markan, Kuldeep Singh, Chetan Prakash, and Karam Singh Dhillon were also present.

Walks, camps mark ‘World Diabetes Day’

Ludhiana, November 14
A camp for diabetics, walk for half-an-hour through several localities around the institution and an exhibition on management of the diseases marked ‘World Diabetes Day’ celebrations at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here today.

Free blood sugar test, diet counselling and advice on the follow-up treatment and management was provided to patients with special focus on care of the feet for the diabetics in accordance with the theme for the year - ‘put feet first, prevent amputations’ at the camp. More than 60 patients, along with students and doctors of CMCH participated in the walk which went through Baba Than Singh Chowk and Division No 3 Chowk. Students of Nursing College of CMC also staged a drama on the theme.

Dr John Abraham, Medical Superintendent CMCH, who flagged off the walk, appreciated the efforts of people towards carrying forward the awareness movement about diabetes. He said diabetes, the silent killer, was now one of the most common non-communicable diseases globally. It was the fourth main cause of death in most developed countries while 80 percent of the non-traumatic amputations were attributed to this disease.

In Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) over 150 patients were examined at a medical camp which marked World Diabetes Day and more than 200 persons participated in the walk which was organised by Noro Nordisk to emphasise the importance of walking as prevention and management of diabetes.

Emphasising that if left uncontrolled, diabetes affected all organs of the body including heart, brain, kidneys, eyes and foot, Dr Parminder Singh, head, diabetes wing Endocrinology Department DMCH pointed out that in India there were nearly 35 million diabetics and probably an equal number of undiagnosed patients which was a matter of great concern.

He stressed that the diabetics should keep their blood sugar level within normal range so as to avoid damage to nerves and at the same time maintain vigil against any blisters or redness on their feet.

Speaking on ENT manifestations among diabetic patients, Dr Munish Munjal, Associate Professor, Department of ENT, DMCH, informed that patients might suffer from sudden loss of hearing, imbalance or loss of speech, discharging boils in nose or the ears and the infections gradually causing paralysis of various nerves.

The Nishkam Seva Society and the Jai Deva Service Society jointly organised a free medical check up camp at Shree Gita Mandir Charitable Dispensary in Vikas Nagar to observe World Diabetes Day.

Khemjit lifts gold

Ludhiana, November 14
Khemjit Singh of Ludhiana Weightlifting Club, Rakh Bagh, proved his mettle to secure the first position in the 85 kg category in the one-day Ludhiana District Weightlifting Championship held at the Ludhiana Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Club here yesterday.

Khemjit with an attempt of 260 kg won the gold while Gurjeet Singh of Khanna (252 kg) and Pawan Kumar Sharma of Ludhiana Club (247.5 kg) finished second and third, respectively.

In the 56 kg category, Jagmeet Singh of Guru Nanak Stadium Academy lifted a total of 182.5 kg to bag a gold medal while Monu Kumar of Ludhiana Club with 172.5 kg had to remain content with the silver. The third place was bagged by Davinder Singh of Boparai Club who lifted 140 kg.

In the 62 kg section, Gurpreet Singh of Ludhiana Club proved his class, lifting 217.5 kg for the first place. He was closely followed by Deepak Sharma also from the Ludhiana Club whose attempt of 215 fetched him the silver medal while Manjinder Singh of Khanna secured third spot with a lift of 207.5 kg.

Kamaljeet Singh of the Ludhiana Club with an attempt of 237 kg was well ahead of others and clinched the gold medal in the 69 kg category. Jagjit Singh from Stadium Academy with 210 kg won silver while bronze medal winner, Raman Tandon from Khanna lifted 205 kg.

In the 77 kg category, Pardeep Sharma of the Ludhiana Club gave a sterling performance as he lifted 282.5 kg for the gold medal while the silver and bronze medal winning lifters, Balvinder Singh of the Stadium Academy and Falvir Singh of Khanna attempted successfully 257.5 kg and 255 kg, respectively.
