Ludhiana, November 14
He somehow managed to reach the Chief Minister’s residence in Chandigarh today but he was not allowed to meet Amarinder Singh by his staff. Mr Mohinder Singh, a Jagraon-based man, who was allegedly deprived of his ancestral property and had left the city on foot a few days ago to meet the Chief Minister and subsequently the Prime Minister, was told to go back as “the Chief Minister had no time to listen to his complaints.”

This was claimed by Mr Mohinder Singh while talking to TNS on the phone. He said that after facing many obstacles, he had reached the Chief Minister’s house, but the latter’s staff told him to go back.

“A gentleman listened to my grievances. However, after he spoke to the SSP, Jagraon, on the phone, he at once became indifferent and asked me to leave the place, saying that the Chief Minister could not waste his precious time on people like me,” claimed Mr Mohinder Singh, adding that after being shown the door, he and his family had decided to meet the Prime Minister now.

“Mr Manmohan Singh is the only hope for us now. Let us see if he listens to us. We walked 150 km to meet Capt Amarinder Singh, but to no avail. Now, we will walk another 300 km,” he said.

Mr Mohinder Singh alongwith his wife Sukhwinder Kaur and daughters — Neetu Singh (19), Amrita Singh, (18), Parveen Kaur (16), and Rajni (12) — hailing from Katcha Malik Road, Jagraon, have threatened immolation in front of the Prime Minister’s office if justice is denied to them.

They have alleged that they were falsely implicated in criminal cases and their relatives have occupied their house.

They had left Jagraon on November 4 and walked to Chandigarh. They were detained by the Sector 3 police. His robe, which had his grievance scribbled on it, was snatched by the police, he alleged. He added that the documents pertaining to his complaints were also destroyed by the police and he had to prepare those afresh. After waiting for so many days, he had finally gone to meet the Chief Minister today.

“Now, we all will walk to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister. I do not know how many days we will have to spend on the road, but if justice is denied to us, we all will immolate ourselves,” he said.

Mr Mohinder Singh, in his complaint, stated that he was deprived of his ancestral property by his brothers and relatives who shared the property rights and the police was allegedly helping his relatives.

However, the police has been claiming that he had no documentary evidence to vindicate his claim. It added that a case was already registered on his complaint and earlier it had even arrested some of his relatives.

Mr Mohinder Singh claimed that he was falsely implicated and illegally detained in a fake currency case by the Sahnewal police and also harassed later by the Jagraon police.

Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, November 14
The Parents Association of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) students held a meeting here yesterday and elected its office-bearers. The meeting discussed the issue of an increase in fee by the DMCH allegedly misquoting a judgement of the Supreme Court to suit their own benefit.

The ruling of the Supreme Court has indicated the change in fee structure from 2006 batch and that too, subject to the final decision by the state government.

The executive committee decided to fight tooth and nail the highhandedness of the DMCH management. They have demanded from the government to implement Majithia Committee recommendations so that parent should not be harassed further by the management.

They also demanded refund of the excess fee charged by the management from the fresh batch of 2005. The parents have decided not to deposit increased fee, if any, by the DMCH here for 2003 and 2004 batches.

Dr Ashok Gupta has appealed to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and Minister of Medical Education Rajinder Kaur Bhattal to intervene in the matter.

The government in the PMET prospectus has declared a fee of Rs 75,000 whereas the Majithia Committee has fixed a fee of Rs 1 lakh. But, the DMCH is demanding a fee of Rs 242,000 per year.

Historical monument in state of neglect
Mahesh Sharma

Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 14
The state government having failed to maintain the Kahngarh mazar of Shabar Shah Gumat Wala, situated on the outskirts of nearby Payal town in Ludhiana district, an old man has taken up the restructuring of the building with the meager offerings he receives from devotees every Thursday.

According to the old man, Prem Shah, he has been maintaining the mazar for five years. When all his efforts to get the place recognised failed, he inspired some devotees to contribute towards the cost of restructuring of the interior and exterior of the building.

The dome and side walls of the building have developed cracks. Some volunteer masons plastered the exterior of the dome. The plastering work has affected its ancient look.

“What we are bothered is that the structure should not collapse. So we started repairing it in a usual manner. Nobody told us about maintaining the originality of the structure,” said Prem Shah.

The dome presented a spectacular look earlier as Nanak Shahi bricks, which are not available in the market now, were used in its construction. If the repair work was allowed to continue, it might have destroyed the original form of the building.

Residents of the area wish the state government took up the preservation and maintenance of the monument and the Archeological Department propagated its historical significance.

Mahesh Sharma

Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 14
Unique is her way to pay tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru, first Prime Minister of India, on his anniversary every year as she feels indebted to him for the services she availed at Nehru Memorial Library at Teen Murti, New Delhi.

A recipient of the degree of master of philosophy from Punjabi, University, Patiala, Mrs Sharda has been making liberal donations on Children’s Day since 1990 when she presented her research work on the subject “The Role of The Tribune in the Freedom Struggle.” “It was only due to study material available in the form of microfilms at the library and cooperative role of the staff there that I was able to top in my class,” claimed Mrs Sharda. Her work on the subject was appreciated by her seniors.

As she had to study newspapers of pre-Independence period in depth, no other institute could provide the required material.

“Though the copies of the required newspapers were available with The Tribune office, it was not possible for me to go through them individually. The microfilm editions exhibited on projectors provided by the library enabled me to save time and energy and the staff provided us the printed copies of the selected pages," explained Ms Sharda.

She recognises the contribution of Nehru who had donated his property to the nation. It is here that a planetarium, Trimurti Bhawan, and the library are housed. Instead of publicising her noble cause, she provides books and stationery to needy students as a token of tribute to Chacha Nehru.
