Bank robbery bid foiled,
two arrested
Ludhiana, November 11 Inspector Gurpreet Singh, SHO Division No. 2 police station, said the teams on routine patrol and inspection duty at the bank spotted the youths taking out two guns from their pockets and
pointing it at the bank staff. The policemen immediately swooped down on them and nabbed them. No shot was fired. One of the weapons was found to be a toy pistol while the other was a 303 gun. The robbers have been identified as Sunil and his relative Rakesh, both residents of Shimla Puri here. They had come to the bank on a motorcycle, which they had bought on instalments with an intention to commit such
robberies, the police claimed. While Sunil is an unemployed graduate, Rakesh has allegedly been involved in criminal activities in the past too. The city police had been keeping an eye on the movements in and outside the banks, especially during rush hours, for the past several months after a series of robbery and snatching incidents had taken place in the city. The security was intensified after the bank robbery in Jalandhar. |
Industrial units declare
concealed income of Rs 3 crore
Ludhiana, November 11 While the officials were tight-lipped about the entire survey operation carried out yesterday on two fabrics and yarn units here, it was reliably learnt that the fabrics unit in Bagh Khazanchian had surrendered concealed income of Rs 81 lakh while the yarn factory on Rahon road had come clean with a concealed income of Rs 2.11 crore. The amount of concealed income, said the sources, was calculated on the basis of discrepancies in books of account, sale transactions and stocks of raw material and finished goods. Inquiries made by Ludhiana Tribune revealed that the top brass of income tax chief commissionerate here was keeping a close eye on certain high turnover industrial and trading houses where survey operations for unearthing concealed income were to be carried out in the next couple of days. A senior officer of the department observed that the next installment of advance tax, due for payment on December 15, would determine the future course of action for the department as far as survey and search operations were concerned. "The department intends to create a relationship of mutual trust and confidence with the tax payers. But at the same time, we are duty-bound to collect due taxes on true income and all our efforts are directed towards this objective." Meanwhile, a
survey by the Income Tax Department was being conducted on business premises of Sharu Industries and Sharu Steels in the Industrial Area and Focal Point here by a team of officials, led by Mr Rajeshwar Yadav, Joint Commissioner, Range VII. The IT officials were reported to be scrutinising the books of account, sale records, stocks and other transactions of these firms to ascertain the tax liability and extent of evasion of tax, if any. The officials refused to divulge any further information and the survey operations were still continuing till this evening. |
Headless body of youth recovered
Ludhiana, November 11 The Salem Tabri police has registered a case of murder. The SHO, Mr G.S. Bains, said it seemed that the youth was murdered somewhere else and the body was dumped in the river. The murder seemed to have occurred place about two days ago. The police has not been able to establish the identity of the deceased so far. The head has also not been found. The police conducted a massive combing operation of the area in this regard. The police had got a call from an anonymous caller in the morning who informed it about the body. The body was retrieved and later a post-mortem examination was conducted at the local Civil Hospital. No injury was found on the body except for the throat. The police said it could not be ascertained if the man was a migrant. It was inquiring about a missing person from nearby areas. Sources said the clothes of the deceased had been removed to make the identification difficult. The police was also working on the theory that the body could have floated downstream. An alert has been sounded all over the state. Meanwhile, the city police is baffled at the recovery of unidentified male bodies one after the other in the last few days where a definite attempt was made to destroy the evidence of the identity of the deceased by either burning the body or beheading it. Three such bodies have been recovered so far out of which only one could be identified. Two bodies were found in Salem Tabri police station area while one was in Basti Jodhewal. Though there does not seem to be any suggestion of some serial murders, the common link between the murders was the trend of destroying the identification . It was a cause for worry as it hampers investigations considerably. A badly charred body of an unidentified man was found near Kakuwal village by the Basti Jodhewal police on November 9. The body was burnt beyond recognition. Two days after, the case progress hinges on the identification. Today in Qasabad village another unidentified body has been recovered. This time the assailants had beheaded the victim. The case cannot move on till the head was recovered. About 10 days ago partially burnt body of a migrant was found near grain market in Salem Tabri police station. The body was
identified as the move to burn it was not successful. The case was however, yet to be solved though the salem tabri police claims it had got some clinching evidence in it. Police sources said it could be just a coincidence that such trend was witnessed in three murders. The trend however strongly suggested that the murderers were not first timers. ‘‘ They were experienced criminals who knew destroying the body was prove beneficial to them.’’ |
Demolition squad returns
empty-handed
Ludhiana, November 11 Led by Dr Jaswant Singh, Joint Commissioner of the civic body, a team comprising Mr Sukh Sagar Bhatia, MTP, Mr Meharban Singh, ATP, four building inspectors, DSP Amandeep Kaur, around 30 policemen and labourers, along with a bulldozer, had gone to the area to raze the structure. However, the team came back, stating that it had given two day’s time to the owner to pull down the structure himself. As soon as the team reached the spot, officials went inside the house where the demolition was to be carried out. Councillors Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Balkar Singh also reached the spot. The officials and councillors reportedly had a closed-door meeting with the owner and the team returned. When the councillors came out of the house, they talking to mediapersons, denied any pressure. They said they were visiting the house of Education Minister, Harnam Dass Johar nearby but came this way when they heard commotion. They, however, said they welcomed the decision of the MC the team to give more time to the alleged violator. The owner, an influential businessman, is said to have constructed rooms in contravention of building bylaws. The MC Commissioner, Mr S.K. Sharma, had on June 30 ordered the demolition of the structure. The complainant said it was strange that the MC team did not even bother about the orders of the Commissioner. Despite having a heavy police force, it did not do anything. |
Workers given relief, says Hero Cycles management
Ludhiana, November 11 “Around Rs 80 lakh has been paid to 82 workers of Highway and nearly Rs 20 lakh to 10 workers from Rockman,” legal adviser of the companies, Mr B.D. Arora, said. General secretary of the CITU Punjab, Mr Jagdish Chand, however, ruled out the claims of the management and said the management had been talking about a couple of workers who were not a part of the union and who the management intended to take back. “Even if a few workers, who have not joined others in their struggle and accept the compensation, it does not mean that others would end their struggle for justice. The management quoting false figures,” Mr Chand said. An official from the Labour Department, when contacted, said a few workers had come to receive compensation, “But we cannot disclose the amount as details are yet to be prepared,” he said. Mr Arora said the workers had begun accepting compensation. “A few of them have started coming, many of them are not coming to take the compensation due to the union pressure,” he alleged. He said the compensation included closure compensation, gratuity, earned wages, bonus and other benefits. The Managing Director of Hero Cycles, Mr S.K.Rai, alleged that the CITU was politicising the entire issue. “The decision pertaining to closure was a tripartite agreement. The workers were very well aware of it,” he said, adding that the workers claim that the decision of closure came to them as a surprise was false and baseless. “Union leaders are provoking the workers only to satisfy their own political ambitions. If they were so serious, why would the auto components manufacturing units of these companies be functional,” he said referring to the auto divisions of the two companies that have closed their cycle divisions. Blaming the workers for the situation that led to the closure he said rising labour problem in the city portrayed the “beginning of the end of prosperity in the state”. Workers, meanwhile continued with their protest against the closure and held protest dharnas. |

The CCIT further asked all persons, covered within the ambit of income tax, to file their return as part of their obligation and as duty towards the nation. “The department on its part assures full cooperation, assistance and transparency, along with a tax-payer friendly environment”. Members of both the associations maintained that the impact of SMS messages regarding filing of returns by October 31 had yielded the desired results and a large number of people had responded by filing their income tax returns. Further, the motivational advertisements and TV clippings for fulfillment of tax obligations had also left a positive impact on public. Mr Juneja and Mr Gupta agreed with the contention of Mr Pall that surveys were necessitated when correct and due taxes were not paid and investments or expenditure did not reflect in the returns. Police arrests husband of rescued
woman
Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 11 Meanwhile the Punjab Mazdoor Nirman Union demanded a probe into the alleged highhandedness of the police. Sources at the Sudhar police station revealed that Pardeep Sawhney of Samastipur in Bihar was nabbed when he was trying to leave the area. He along with his brother Kailash, had allegedly attempted to murder Meena Devi on the preceding night. Kailash who had been admitted to the Civil Hospital, Sudhar, fled when he came to know that the victim had named him in the FIR. Dr Harjinder Kaur of Sudhar village had informed the police on Wednesday night that a woman detained in a room in Purshotam Building was crying for help. Mr Shawinder Singh, SHO, sent a police team led by ASI Harvinder Singh to rescue the victim. The team found that the woman had been detained in a room and the main gate of the building, which had been occupied by many migrant families, had also been locked from outside. A group of migrant labourers had stopped the police from entering the building, as according to them it was a family dispute. The policemen were able to rescue the profusely bleeding woman by scaling a wall. She had been beaten up by her husband Pardeep, Kailash and others. Preliminary investigations revealed that Meena suspected that Pardeep had illicit relations with another woman. Besides objecting to his extramarital relation she used to stop him from indulging in alleged illegal activities. “When I did not bow to his dictates, he threatened to eliminate me and locked me in a room after imjuring with a sickle on Wednesday night,” Meena told the police. Meanwhile, Mr Tarsem Jodhan, former MLA, demanded a probe into the incident in which some migrant labourers identified as Gangadhar Jha, Kailash Sawhney, Shanbhoo Sawhney, Shivji Sawhney and Rambali Sawhney had accused the police of torturing them. Though the Sudhar police has refuted the charges, Mr G S Aulakh, DSP, Raikot, has assured a fair inquiry into the incident. |
