Conduct disorder needs early attention, says expert Ludhiana, November 9 Some conduct disorders among children were aggression towards people and animals, besides violence. Stressing that the children who exhibited such behaviour should receive comprehensive evaluation, Dr Khurana said those with such a disorder might exhibit mood disorders, anxiety, substance abuse, hyperactivity disorder, learning problem or thought disorders, which could be treated. “Research has shown that youngsters with conduct disorders are likely to have ongoing problems if they do not receive early and comprehensive treatment. Without treatment, such children are unable to adapt to the demands of adulthood and continue to have problems with relationships and holding a job. Some of them might even break laws and behave in an anti-social manner,” he said. The development of conduct disorder among children could be attributed to various factors like brain damage, child abuse, genetic vulnerability, failure and traumatic experiences. “Treatment of children with conduct disorder can be complex and challenging. It can be provided in a variety of settings depending on the severity of the behaviour. Uncooperative attitude of the child, coupled with fear and distrust further adds to the challenge,” he said. Psychiatrists used information from the child, family, teachers and other medical specialists to understand the causes of the disorder and develop a comprehensive treatment plan. Behaviour therapy and psychotherapy were necessary to help the child express and control anger, he said. |
