BKU to hold anti-WTO rally on November 18
Ludhiana, November 9 Stating this here today, the BKU president Mr Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, and general-secretary, Mr Manjit Singh Kadian, said the memorandum to be submitted to the Prime Minister would be signed by 10 lakh farmers from across the country. The signature campaign for this purpose was being carried by farmers’ organisations throughout the country, including Punjab. “All the district units of BKU are reaching out to the farmers to secure their signatures on the memorandum against WTO regime and the respective district presidents will submit signatures of at least 5000 farmers from each district to the state president of BKU in the state committee to be held here on November 10,” said the union functionaries. According to Mr Lakhowal, the BKU would urge the Prime Minister to lead the developing countries in taking up the matter of granting hidden subsidies to farmers by the developed countries. The heavily subsidised farm production in developed countries was posing a grave danger to the agricultural produce in the third world countries, rendering them uncompetitive in the global market. The BKU leaders maintained that if this imbalance was not effectively tackled, the farm economy of India was bound to face a stagnation with the direct result that farmers would continue to be crushed under debt burden and farming would no longer remain economically viable. The union would also emphasise upon the government to continue the policy of minimum support price of agricultural produce and further that the support prices of different crops should be determined on the basis of wholesale price index to sustain the farm economy. |
