‘Black Divali’ for Nankana Sahib School teachers
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, November 5
The teachers of Nankana Sahib Public School in a press note here said that they had to celebrate a black Divali as they were not paid their salaries before Divali. Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College and Nankana Sahib Public School are run by Nankana Sahib Education Trust controlled by the SGPC and while the teachers of engineering college got their pay cheques , the school teachers were not given their due.

The reason given by the teachers is that they had earlier complained against high handedness of Mr Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Additional Secretary Nanakana Sahib Education Trust.

The press note stated that Mr Grewal had summoned a computer teacher home and when the teacher delined , he had ordered the contractor recruiting teachers to give fresh advertisement and appoint new teachers. The teachers complaint against his behaviour to Bibi Jagir Kaur, president, SGPC,which annoyed Mr Grewal.

Mr Maheshinder Singh, did not like this behaviour of teachers and decided not to give them their salaries. The teachers are protesting against it. When contacted Mr Maheshinder Singh in a telephonic conversation with this correspondent said ,’I have no reason to hold the salaries of staff. On October 26, the teachers had brought salary register to me. I asked them to bring ‘attendance register’ to me as I had heard that some teachers were not present but were marking themselves present in the attendance register. After that no register was brought to me and so I thought that either the teachers had gone to the trustees or Bibi Jagir Kaur and has sorted out the matter. I would certainly like to add that certain teachers for reasons known to them are indulging in politics and spoiling the academic atmosphere of the school.”

Teachers design KG curriculum
Asha Ahuja

Ludhiana, November 5
A seminar-cum-interaction programme was organised in the Conference Hall of BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, here, today.
It was an initiative taken by the school to bring together people who designed the curriculum for kindergarten. It emphasised on the need of making teaching ‘child-centred’ right from the beginning.

Mr Sarabjit Kwatra and Mr Raman Nayyar from Ways and Means, a human resource development institute, conducted the seminar. After the warm floral welcome by Principal, Mrs Paramjit Kaur, and Mr R.B. Khanna, the sacred lamp-lighting ceremony took place.

Mrs Paramjit Kaur laid emphasis upon organising such seminar as a few interactive hours made it possible to build a worthwhile tomorrow. The wonderful part of the seminar was its tri-part division into knowledge, skill and attitude which transformed the teaching and learning environment.

It put the trust back into teachers to work together, to develop their own projects, to be innovative and creative, to inspire their students in a way to bring out all required colours in their personality.

Nearly about 60 teachers from various schools attended the seminar which was made interesting by slide shows, games, interaction and dramatisation.

An open session was also held in the end and queries put up by teachers were well-answered by the resource persons.

An academic curriculum was developed for students of nursery, lower KG and upper KG by consensus of the teachers present.

IMA writes to PM on doctor harassment case
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, November 5
The Punjab unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has written to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh seeking his intervention in a case of alleged harassment of a Machhiwara-based doctor by relatives of a patient, who died in a Ludhiana hospital.

Dr Gursharan Singh, a senior functionary of the association, in his letter to the Prime Minister, said the case pertained to Machhiwara, a historical town 35 km from here, in which a member of the IMA, Dr. Sunil Dutt, had been harassed by relatives of a patient, who died in Ludhiana. The doctor had done nothing except prescribing some medicines to the deceased that too three days prior to his death. Unfortunately, the patient died, probably due to dengue.

He said the relatives of the deceased started harassing the doctor by resorting to a dharna, besides physically assaulting the doctor and rampaging Dutt Nursing Home. To pressurise the authorities into registering a case, the protesters also demonstrated in front of the local police station. Later on, the police registered a case against the rioters, he pointed out.

Dr Gursharan Singh said the IMA constituted a team of doctors which went through the records and found that the doctor had no link with the death of the patient. “The committee has given a few recommendations which need your attention. These points need your urgent attention as it pertains to the health of our nation,” he said.

He said India is among those countries who are having a poor patient -doctor ratio. As many as 5.6 doctors exist for 1,00,000 people in the country, as per the World Health Organisation record. Whereas, in the USA and Australia 5.6 doctors look after just 2,000 people.

“The IMA is of the view that the ratio in the context of India has deteriorated considering the exodus of doctors from India to the developed countries. Countries like Australia feel that they are still short of doctors despite the high doctor-patient ratio. They have gone to the extent of abolishing any pre- entrance test for Indian MBBS doctors with five-year experience. Same is the scenario in the UK, where a lot of our specialists are migrating,” he said.

“Many other countries are in the process of following the same policy as Indian doctors have been able to prove their worth. Already 50 per cent of doctors migrating to Australia from all over the world are from India only. The fact of exodus of doctors can also be checked from the number of character certificates issued by the MCI and various state medical councils.

“These developments must set of alarm bells as this is going to create a big vacuum of doctors in India. A detailed enquiry into this will be able to establish that such incidences as that happened to Dr Dutt of Machhiwara are the main reason leading to the exodus of the doctors,” he said.

The IMA requested the Prime Minister to bring a special legislation for the protection of hospitals as at times such nuisances proved fatal to other patients admitted to that set-up. He also added that this was not aimed at protecting anyone from law.
