PGI doctor honoured

Chandigarh, November 5
Dr Prema Menon, Assistant Professor of Pediatric Surgery, PGI, has been awarded the prestigious ‘Purushottam Upadhyaya Research Foundation Award’ by the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons at their annual meeting held at Bangalore.

Dr Menon was chosen for the award for her research work on ”Vesicoureteric reflux in children” which is a common cause of urinary tract infections in children.

The research concerned 30 children over a period of seven years in whom the progress of the disease, growth changes and kidney functions were studied and analysed. The positive factors for improved growth of these children were also identified. — TNS

Lecture on ‘healthy heart’ delivered

As part of its initiative to educate the general public on health care, the PGIMER today organised the first lecture on ‘healthy heart’ delivered by PGI Director Professor K.K. Talwar.

Addressing the audience which included not only those from the medical fraternity but many Chandigarh residents as well, Professor Talwar said the incidence of heart diseases can largely be controlled through spiritual practices and thoughts. He said various studies reveal that those with cunning thoughts were more prone to heart diseases.

Professor Talwar informed that lack of physical exercise, sedentary lifestyle, unbalanced diet, consumption of alcohol, smoking and hypertension were some of the high risk factors leading to heart diseases. He added that hypertension had become a silent killer as most of the times people were not even aware of the fact that they were suffering from it.

Diabetics also stood at a high risk of suffering from heart ailments.

Talking about the increased cholesterol levels among people, Professor Talwar said the use of sunflower and groundnut oil should be avoided and soyabean and mustard oil could be used in combination in addition to desi ghee which should be consumed in moderation.

He stressed on regular exercise in order to generate HDL.

Professor Talwar suggested that in order to avoid heart disease one must take into consideration one’s diet, physical activity, weight and blood pressure in addition to consumption of alcohol and cigarette smoking.

Blood donation camp organised

Mohali, November 5
A blood donation camp was organised by the Mohali Industrial Association (MIA) in association with the State Bank of India, SSI branch, and the Rotary Club at the MIA Bhawan here today. As many as 80 units of blood were donated.

The camp was inaugurated by Mr Mohan Lal, Chief Manager, State Bank of India, Zonal office, Region III, Punjab.

Cancer Awareness Day to be observed on Nov 7

With seven to nine lakh new cancer cases occurring in India every year, the Department of Radiotherapy , Regional Cancer Centre, PGIMER will observe the `National Cancer Awareness Day’ on November 7 as designated by the National Cancer Control Programme, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

According to Dr S.C. Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Radiotherapy, the major cancers in men are mostly tobacco related (lung, orl cavity, larynx, oesophagus and pharynx) while in women the leading cancers are cervix, breast and tobacco related. In addition to this WHO recognises cancer as a huge public health problem killing more people worldwide than the combined death toll from malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

To educate people regarding the risk factors and the early signs of cancer and to dispel some of the myths concerning cancer, a public lecture is being organised at PGI on November 7. An exhibition displaying the posters depicting various causes of cancer and measures for prevention and early detection will also be put up. The cancer survivors will also address the public and share their experiences.

Chandigarh table tennis championship
begins from Nov 13

Chandigarh, November 5
The Chandigarh Table Tennis Association has decided to organise the Chandigarh State Table Tennis Championship from November 13 to 17 at the Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, Chandigarh.

Competitions will be held in sub-junior boys, sub-junior girls, junior boys and junior girls, men and women, both team championships as well as singles. Boys and girls born on or after January 1, 1992 are eligible for sub-junior categories.

The cut off date for junior boys and girls is January 1, 1989 . Boys and girls born or after January 1, 1994 can compete in the cadet boys and girls singles.

Entry for individual events will be Rs 50 per event or Rs 80 for all individual events. Entry for team is Rs 50 each. Entries close on November 11 at 7 pm with Narinder Saini or Harish Kumar at the Table Tennis Hall.

Khalsa academy win football match

Chandigarh, November 5
The Khalsa Football Academy, Kurali, outclassed Government Model School, Sector 26, by a big margin of 5-0 in the first match of third Kanwar Harbans Lal memorial football 
tournament held at the football grounds, Sector 17, here, today.

Ajay Singh of the Khalsa Academy opened the account in 18th minute of the play. Maintaining the dominating pressure, it was Parminder Singh who made no mistake in scoring the second goal in the 26th minute.

It was again Kurali guys — Ajay Singh, Yadvinder Singh and Jasvir Singh — who dispatched the ball into the goal post in 38th, 48th and 56th minute, respectively.

With this the academy lads won the match and the final score stood at 5-0. Ajay Singh of Khalsa Academy was declared the man of the match.

The Jesus Saviour Academy, Sirhind, won the second match of the day defeating DAV School, Sector 8, by a single goal scored by Nirmal Singh in the 58th minute of the play. Jesus Savior won the match by 1-0. Earlier, Vijay Bhatt of DAV was shown red card in the 10th minute of the play.

Nirmal Singh of Jesus Saviour was adjudged the man of the match.

Mauli Baidwan win kabaddi tourney

Mohali, November 5
The hosts Mauli Baidwan won the top position in the Open Club category of 15 th Kabaddi Tournament on the concluding day at the village grounds here today.

The village team bagged Rs 31,000 beating the Harjit Bajakhana Club of Moga, which remained at the second position and pocketed Rs 25,000.

In 62 kg category, the team of Kakrala Bhai Ka beat the team of Karachon in the finals. The Karachon team got the better of Jaspal Banger team in the finals of 57 kg.

The host team, in the category of 52 kg had to satisfy itself at number two as it lost to the Badanpura team in the finals.

The prizes were distributed by the chief guest Harchand Singh Brast, Political Secretary of Punjab Chief Minister. TNS

Junior carrom teams’ captains named

Piyush Sood and Harshpreet have been named as captains of the Chandigarh Boys’ and Girls’ teams, respectively, which will be participating in the 34th junior national and inter-state carrom championship to be held at Vadodra (Gujarat) from November 14 to 19.

The coaching-cum-practice camp is already on at St Stephen’s School, Sector 45. Mr Mahesh Sekhri has been nominated as the Vice-Chairman of the championship committee and chairman of the medical committee to check overaged players from participating in the championship.

The other players of the teams are as follows: Boys — Raj Kumar, Abhinandan, Hassan, Naushad, Rizwan, Mohammed Shahzad. Girls — Farheen, Neha Goyal, Akanksha, Surbhi Hemdan, Reena, Kudrat, Vishakha.

Mr S.P. Dobhal and Ms Sushila Prasad will be the managers whereas Mr Mazhar Khan will accompany the team as coach.

Golf tournament

The Chandigarh Legal Fraternity Golf Association won the Lega Cup Golf tournament held at Delhi on November 3 and 4.

Anupinder Singh Grewal played the best round of the tournament with a score of 4-over par. Golfers from Allahabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Patna and Delhi participated in the tournament.

DAV beat Delhi school in tennis match

Vijayant Malik of DAV Public School, Sector 8, outclassed Ankit Sachdeva of Modern School, New Delhi, in a well contested tennis match ( under 19 boys) 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 on the concluding day of the CBSE North Zone 1 Tennis tournament for boys and girls, held at Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, here, today.

The DAV team Vijayant Malik and Mandeep Yadav also clinched the double’s title( u-19 boys) defeating Ankit and Pulkit Mishra of Modern School, New Delhi by 6-4, 3-6, 7-6( 7-4)

Other final results are: Under 19 girls: Modern School, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi beat Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh (2-0); Renuka Keswani beat Mrignaini 6-0, 6-1 Garima beat Ankit Singh 6-1, 6-0.

Under 14 girls:

Modern School, New Delhi beat Carmel Convent School, New Delhi ( 2-0); Heena Ahuja beat Diksha Nautiyal 6-3, 6-0. Rythima Baruah beat Tusharika Jha 6-2, 6-2.

Under 14 boys:

DAV Public School, Sreshtha Vihar, New Delhi beat Modern School, N. Delhi (2-1)

Lakshit Sood lost to Shantanu 1-6, 5-7. Chandril Sood beat Manan 6-1, 6-2.

Doubles: Lakshit Sood and Chandril Sood bt Shantanu and Nakul 6-2, 6-3.

Karan shines in St John’s cricket tourney

An all round performance by Karan Goel (35 n o and 4 for 12) enabled St John’s Cricket Academy, Sector 26, to thrash St Soldiers CCL by 10 wickets in the first match of the Ist Under 12 St John’s Trophy. The match was played at the grounds of St John’s High School, Sector 26, here today.

In other match ICL XI beat Citizen XI by 8 wickets.

Brief scores: St Soldiers 94 all out in 24.3 overs (Saransh 21, Karan 4 for 12, Balwinder 3 for 5)

St John’s 95 for no loss in 21.1 overs ( Karan 35 n o, Shivam 32 n o) 2) Citizen XI 79 all out in 24.3 overs (Harman 2 for 3, Guntash 2 for 15) ICL XI 80 for 2 in 17.4 overs (Anirudh 37 n o, Sahibdeep 22).

Income Tax Dept plan for vigilance week

As part of the vigilance awareness week beginning from November 7, the Income Tax Department has chalked out an elaborate programme to redress the grievances of the tax- payers.

According to a press note, the tax-payers can file their complaints with the designated officers, including the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, North-Western Region, Central Revenue Building, Sector 17-E, Chandigarh.

The other designated officers are the Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Headquarters, and the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, Headquarters (Vigilance), both at the Central Revenue Building.

Any aggrieved person could sent in his complaint to the above officers. Anonymous complaints will not be entertained, a press note added.

Paid parking at Sector 6 hospital

Panchkula, November 5
The district health authorities have introduced paid parking at General Hospital, Sector 6, from today.

A Chandigarh-based contractor has been allotted the contract for paid parking at the hospital at the cost of Rs 1.70 lakh. The parking fee for a car has been notified at Rs 5, Rs 2 for scooter and Rs 1 for bicycle. Besides, a full day pass will also be issued at the rate of Rs 10 for car, Rs 5 for scooter and Re 1 for bicycle.

The daily patient OPD at the hospital is 1000, with 700 new patients visiting the hospital daily. As many as 100 emergency cases come to the hospital daily.

Today, there were mild protests from patients that the paid parking system had been introduced without prior intimation. The hospital authorities, on the other hand, maintained that proper procedure had been followed while alloting the tender for paid parking, after a meeting was held under chairmanship of Civil Surgeon.
