‘Tons of Money’ staged at Vivek School

Chandigarh, November 4
Vivek High School, Sector 38, presented a play, “Tons of Money”, as part of the founder’s day celebrations, thus evening. The play was directed by Nick Pillow.
“Tons of Money” is a farce, originally written in the Victorian period by Will Evans and Valentine, and updated for the 20th Century by Alan Aychbourn. It follows the fortunes and misfortunes of Aubrey and Louise Allington, who suddenly having inherited a cast fortune; try to find ways to stay away from the numerous debtors.

Earlier in the day, Vivek High School, Sector 38, held a prayer meeting as mark of the founder’s day celebrations. Starting with Ganesh vandana, the celebrations included “saat suru ka bahata dariya” presented by the junior wing, “Sarv dharm pradhana” by the senior wing amidst chanting of hymns and shabads. The school honoured over 52 students who won scholar blazers for securing 80 per cent and above marks on three consecutive years.

Nine students won the Duke of Edinburgh Award (silver badge). They are — Shirin Sharma, Himani Aggrawal, Gursimran Alhuwalia,Mannat, Amanpreet, Puneet, Aneent Knanna,Viraaj and Karan Jindal. Teachers who have been working in the school for the past 10 years were also honoured by Ms P.K. Singh, Principal of Vivek High School. They are were M. Mehta, Mala Bedi, Renu Puri, Gurdip Singh and Kalpana Sarkaria and the teacher who have served the school for the last 15 years was S.Grewal. Special awards were also given away to teachers Rajbir singh,Reetika and Apra Sud.

Vivekanand institute holds modelling contest

The Swami Vivekanand Group of Institute, Banur, Chandigarh organised a modelling competition in the college campus yesterday. Engineering, pharmacy and B.Ed students of the group participated.
Ten teams from B.tech, B.pharma and B.Ed each participated in the competition.

Undergraduate students catwalking on ramp were looking like professionals models. After the catwalk round, three rounds related with personality tests were conducted.

Three-day folk art convention begins at Rock Garden

The Taj Mahal, created by the great Mughal empire is undeniably magnificent monument but the Rock Garden of the City Beautiful, is never the less a wondrous creation which visionary Nek Chand created out of nothing, opined Ms Rebecca Hoffberger, founder-Director of the American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore.

She was sharing her admiration for the Rock Garden in general and its creator at the opening session of the three-day International Folk Art Convention at the Rock Garden here today.

Ms Rebecca complimented Nek Chand as a pioneer in crafting birds, people, mythological and hybrid creatures out of waste with consummate expertise and said these articles virtually exuded an emotional feel. She added that he was the best known creative artist in the USA.

As many as 30 delegates from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and India are participating in the convention being held under the aegis of Nek Chand Foundation, UK, which was established in 1997.

The objective of the convention is to acknowledge the preeminent position of the Rock Garden as a folk art environment of rare importance and significance, asserted John Maizels, Director of Nek Chand Foundation. He also stressed on the need to recognise the vital and unique message transmitted by these visionary folk art environments worldwide and the unique character of their makers.

The foundation representative from the USA, Anton Razer disclosed that they had already enrolled large number of volunteer members from different countries who kept visiting the Rock Garden on a scheduled basis to render their services here.

The seven-point agenda aimed at the overall improvement of the garden and enroll members for the Chandigarh chapter of the foundation had been scheduled for discussion during the three-day convention which culminates on November 6, 2005.

Nek Chand will be welcomed as he returns on that day from his exhibitions at museums in France, Switzerland and Italy. The amin speakers at the convention include Ms Rebecca Hoffberger (USA) Professor Anton Rajer International Art conservator, Tom Di Maria, Director Creative Arts Growth Centre California (USA), Dr Stephen Huyler, Cultural Anthropologist (USA), Professor Stuart Shepherd Wellington University, (New Zealand), Satya Prem Moira Gibson from the University of Sydney (Australia) John Maizels, Director, Nek Chand Foundation and M.N. Sharma former chief architect of Chandigarh and Punjab.

Chandigarh Games to be held every two years

The just concluded Chandigarh Games which was a maiden but successful attempt by the Chandigarh Olympic Association will now be staged after two years. This was revealed by Mr Ravinder Talwar, Secretary-General of the COA.

He said holding as many as 24 disciplines in just four days and with such a huge budget was a difficult task. But he said hats off to the entire team of COA led by Mr Rana Gurmit Sodhi which made this herculian task possible.

Mr Talwar added that raising resources in a small city like Chandigarh as compared to neighbouring states Punjab and Haryana, was very difficult. But it was the love for sports, which prompted the sponsors to come forward to aid sports and sportspersons.

Mr Talwar said the holding of games on such a big scale also enabled few sport associations will meagre resources to hold their respective state championship. These games would provide them the desired relief.

On the question of Olympic Bhavan, he said the administrator had given consent for the same and he hoped they got the nod for the land. He said the Chandigarh Olympic Association was committed to raise new infrastructure for the upgradation of existing facilities.

Mr Talwar said the Chandigarh Games had however set the trend for a new sport culture in the city which could be noticed from the turnout of the people, sportspersons, and their families.

On the question of addition of sport disciplines in the 2007 Chandigarh Games, he said definitely badminton, squash, lawn bowls and few others would be included.

DAV school enter finals in north zone tennis meet

Chandigarh, November 4
DAV Public School, Sector 8 boys led by Vijayant Malik and Mandeep entered the final of the under 19 boys section on the second day of the CBSE North Zone I Tennis meet being played here today at Mount Carmel, Sector 47.

They will meet Modern School, New Delhi in tomorrow’s final. In the under 19 girls section, Ankita Singh and Mrignayani of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26 enabled their team to reach the finals. They will also meet Modern School, New Delhi in the final.

In under 14 boys section, it was DAV Public School,Srestha Vihar, Delhi team comprising twins Chandril and Lakshit Sood that sailed in the final by beating Ryan International School, New Delhi in the semi-final held today.

In under 14 girls section, it will be an all Delhi affair with Carmel Convent School, New Delhi to vie with Modern School, New Delhi in the final.

According to Mr Charles Samuel, Principal of the hosts school, the prize distribution function will be held tomorrow at 3 pm.

Gurmail shines in kabaddi tourney

Mohali, November 4
Gurmail Singh of Eelwal village, Sangrur, stole the show on the penultimate day of the 15th kabaddi tournament being held at Mauli Baidwan village, near here, today.
Gurmail Singh got past a trolley, with as many as 24 persons aboard, over his thighs. The three-day tournament is being organised by the Baidwan Sports Club and Gram Panchayat, Mauli Baidwan.

Kabaddi tournaments, under various categories, were held during this meet. In the 47 kg category, among the 18 teams, Ballumajra (1) team got the first position, whereas the second place went to Ballumajra (2) and pocketed Rs 2000 and 1700, respectively.

In the 52 kg, out of 16 teams, Badanpura team got the better of Mauli Baidwan team and the winners and runners-up were awarded Rs 2500 and Rs 2000, respectively. Jaspal Bangar team bagged the first place under the 57 kg category and Khuda Alisher came second. Fourteen teams had participated in this category.

The tournament was inaugurated by Mr Jaswant Singh, sarpanch of Mauli Baidwan village. The chief guest, Mr Vikramjit Kaushik, announced Rs 1.5 lakh to the Baidwan Sports Club and another Rs 21,000 were presented by Tejinder Singh Punia to the club on the occasion.

Boxing championship

The sixth Chandigarh State Women Boxing Championship and the 28th Chandigarh State (junior boys) Boxing Championship will be held at boxing hall, Sector 42 here on November 12 and 13, respectively.

During the championship, the Chandigarh women boxing team will be selected for participation in the sixth National Senior Women Boxing Championship to be held at Jamshedpur from November 29 to December 3. The boys’ team for the National Junior Boys Boxing Championship, scheduled to be held in Goa, will also be selected during the meet.

Boxers born in 1988, 89 and 90 will be eligible for participation in the junior championship and the weighing-in of all participants will be held at the boxing hall on November 12 between 8 am to 10 am.

St Stephen’s beat DAV in football tourney

Star-studded St Stephen’s hammered DAV School, Sector 8, by a big margin of 3-0 in the inaugural match of the third Kanwar Harbans Lal Memorial Football tournament held at the football grounds, Sector 17, here, today.

Jashanpreet of St Stephen’s opened the account in 48th minute of the play. Maintaining the dominating pressure, it was St Stephen’s Chhavideep who made no mistake in scoring the second goal in the 64th minute. It was again Chavvideep who dispatched the ball into the goal post in 66th minute which decided the win for St Stephen’s lads and the final score stood at 3-0. DAV lads came up with couple of good moves but lack of planning ruined their hopes. Jashanpreet of St Stephen’s was declared the man of the match.

DAV (B) win by 48 runs

The DAV (B) team defeated Guru Nanak Public School (GNPS), Sector 36, by 48 runs in the UT Inter-School Cricket Tournament for the Shivalik Trophy held at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, here today.

Elected to bat , DAV (B) piled up 174 for 9 in 30 overs in their last league match whereas GNPS-36 were bundled out for 126 in 28.5 overs.

Brief scores: DAV (B): 174 for 9 in 30 overs — Abhishek 30, Anshul 26, Gaurav and Hitesh 24 each; Navtej 2 for 24 and Sanjeet Singh 2 for 12 GNPS-36: 126 all out in 28.5 overs; and Japneet 6 for 15.
