Chandigarh has been once again ranked first in the per capita income for the financial year 2004-2005. Chandigarh had earlier topped the national figures at about Rs 60,000 per capita during the financial year 2003-04.

60-year-old held for bid to rape mentally challenged girl

The local police has arrested a 60-year-old resident of Kishangarh village on the allegations of attempting to rape a mentally challenged minor girl, last night.

Ban on throwing puja material into Sukhna

The Chandigarh Administration has prohibited the throwing of any kind of waste material, including the puja material, into the Sukhna Lake. This has been done to protect the flora and fauna of the lake.

12-year-old girl hit by car, killed
Chandigarh, November 3
In a hit and run case, a 12-year-old girl was killed after an unidentified car rammed into her late this evening. The victim, identified as Pinky of Naya Gaon, was crossing the road dividing Sector 24 and 25 when the accident occurred.

Urban renewal mission for city planned

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has submitted a project to the UT Administration under the Government of India’s coherent urbanisation policy for improvement of infrastructure for urban population in the form of a mission known as the ‘National Urban Renewal Mission’.

Neighbour’s dog ‘prompts’ woman to fire in air
Chandigarh, November 3
Fight with neighbours over disturbance being caused by their dog led to the firing of a shot into the air late last night. A Sector 44-based woman fired a shot into air and allegedly threatened to kill herself, if her neighbours did not stop their dog from disturbing her.

Possession of weapons by residents worries cops
Chandigarh, November 3
Gunshots, shattering the city’s peace and tranquility, are giving the Chandigarh Police sleepless nights. Though senior police officers refuse to comment on the issue, sources in the police headquarters say that two cases of firing in less than a fortnight are giving the cops the creeps.

2 more held in double murder case
Panchkula, November 3
The Raipur Rani police has arrested two more persons — Rinku and Gian — involved in the Hangola double murder case. With this, the number of those arrested in the case has raisen to three.

Scooter, jewellery stolen, 6 held for gambling
Chandigarh, November 3
A motorcycle and a scooter were reportedly stolen from the city. Besides this, the thieves decamped with jewellery and Rs 2,000 from a house in Sector 22. Elsewhere, in three separate incidents the local police held six persons on the allegations of indulging in gambling.

Gas agency employee deprived of mobile phone
Chandigarh, November 3
Snatching continues to go unchecked in the city. Nothing else can explain yet another incident in which a scooterist sped away after snatching a mobile phone in Sector 30 this morning. A gold chain of a woman was snatched in Sector 23, yesterday.

2 held for carrying poppy husk
Mohali, November 3
Two persons have been arrested by the police on a charge of carrying poppy husk. Thirtytwo kg of poppy husk was recovered from them. It is reported that the suspects were arrested from near Yadavindra Public School when they were coming from Chandigarh.

Tribunal’s communique to Benches

The Principal Bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal in a communiqué to all the Seven Benches, including the Chandigarh Bench, has said the notices in case of the Union of India and the Railways, should be sent directly to the department concerned, instead of serving it to the Senior Standing Counsel of the Union of India and the Standing Counsel of the Railways.

‘Dayan’ focuses on rural maladies
Chandigarh, November 3

The Indian People’s Theatre Association, Punjab, and the Kaifi Azmi Foundation teamed up to present a cultural programme titled ‘Lok hitaishi sabhyachark shaam’ at the Tagore Theatre today in which three plays were staged. The programme commenced with staging of excerpts from a play based on the life and poetry of Kaifi Azmi “Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam.”. It was a literary tribute to the legendary poet, Kaifi Azmi, a man of myriad colours.

Vaccine for rheumatic fever possible in 10 years
Chandigarh, November 3
Dr Edward L. Kaplan, Chief of the Streptococcal Centre for Reference and Research, World Health Organisation, today said it could take another 10 years to successfully develop a vaccine to check occurrence of rheumatic fever.

GMCH to have hand surgery unit
Chandigarh, November 3
The Department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, is in the process of setting up a dedicated hand and upper limb surgery unit at the hospital.

About 2 million rheumatic fever patients in India
Chandigarh, November 3
It is estimated that there are around 1.4 to 2 million patients of rheumatic fever in India and around 50,000 are added every year. This was revealed during the Barry Memorial Oration held at the PGI here today.
