Chandigarh, November 3 Addressing a press conference Dr Kaplan said the clinical trials of the vaccine in the USA and Canada were in its early stages and the cost effectiveness of the vaccine was also not known yet. He was at the PGI to deliver a lecture on “Rheumatic Fever: The continuing saga of the broken hearts. How much longer wait for a solution? “as part of the Berry Memorial Oration. Since the occurrence or prevalence disease was most common among the socio-economic disadvantaged population in the developing world, cost effectives of the vaccine was of prime concern to the researchers. In India, research on the streptococci infection was being undertaken at ICMR and PGI, Chandigarh. Dr Kaplan, who is Professor of Paediatrics Infectious Disease, and Pae diatric Cardiology, University of Minnessota, Minneapolis, said the rheumatic fever was common in the school age children between five and 15. Research was also being done to study genetic pattern in certain races like aborigines in Australia. He said though the scientists had made tremendous strides in molecular biology and techniques to study the causes of rheumatic fever, the results had not percolated down to the population. Dr N.K. Ganguly from the ICMR, who was at the PGI, said a lot of inputs were going into developing a vaccine for the diseases. Prof K.K. Talwar, Director of the PGI, said the Department of Community Medicine, Cardiology and Experimental Medicine, PGI, the Indian Council of Medical Research and Punjab Health Services, had jointly launched ‘Jai Vigyan Mission Mode Project on Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease Control’ in Ropar district.
