No headway was made towards resolving any of the contentious issues like sharing of water and power at the meeting of the Northern Zonal Council held after six years, here today.

India concerned over situation in Gilgit
New Delhi, October 25
India today upped the ante on Jammu and Kashmir when it formally expressed concern on the situation in Gilgit, capital of Northern Areas, which is in the grip of renewed sectarian violence since October 11. This is the first time in years when New Delhi has gone on record to express concern over the deteriorating concern in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, which are under the administrative control of Pakistan.

CPM divided over IT sector

Should IT sector come under the purview of essential services divided the CPM Politburo members with the trade union wing opposing any such move and those in the saddle of power in the states rallying for it to attract investments. However, adopting a safe stance, Politburo member Sitaram Yechury told reporters “Labour laws must be upheld in the IT sector.

The Income Tax Department has opened its counters on Saturday and Sunday (October 29 & 30) to accept the returns of income to ensure administrative convenience, but has not further extended the last date. The due date for filing the returns of income under Section 139 of the Income Tax Act is October 31, a press note said. — TNS
