Appointed
: Mr Pardeep Sareen of New Tehsil Pura has been appointed as district president (urban) of the Punjab Pradesh Youth Congress. 

2 suspended: Two employees of the Income Tax Department were suspended, including Amarjit Singh Chawla, Tax Assistant and Sham Singh, a peon, on the allegation of forging signatures of higher officials. Ms Saroj Bala, Chief Commissioner, Income Tax, said they had forged signatures and multiple refunds were given to some taxpayers.

HOSHIARPUR
Booked: On the complaint of Mr Bhawani Prasad, Superintendent of Post Office, Hoshiarpur, the Tanda Police on Thursday registered a case against Sanjiv Kumar who was posted at Ahiyapur for misappropriating money. The Superintendent said Sanjiv Kumar had misappropriated of Rs 33,653 in 2002, and had gone abroad.

Cartridges found
: As many as 22 live cartridges of different calibre, including 15 of .32 bore, two of .38 bore, five of 7.62 mm, were found from a field in New Dalla. The local police on the information by Gurdip Singh, sarpanch of the village, has registered a case.

Two arrested: The Raikot police intercepted a scooter (PAL 1586) in the Rupa Patti Raikot area and seized 20 kg of poppy husk from Jagdev Singh Jassa and Amarjit Singh, both of Berij Hari Singh.

Function: A function was organised to observe Police Commemoration Day at the Police Lines on Friday. Mr R.K. Jaiswal, SSP, Mr Gurcharan Singh Galib, former MP, Mr Darshan Singh Brar, general secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Commit-tee, Mr Sukhwinder Singh Gill, SDM, Mr Daljit Singh Chhina, Tehsildar, Mr Gurdeep Singh Bhaini, former MLA, Col Bhag Singh, Mr Gurjit Singh Romana, DSP, Mr Dharam Pal, SHO, other dignitaries of the town and kin of police martyrs attended the function.

Ludhiana
Blood donation: The Rotary Club, Ludhiana North, organised a blood donation camp at the Government College for Women here on Friday. Mrs Shweta Verma, chairperson, Indian Red Cross Society, Ludhiana, was the chief guest. Ms Prabhjot Kaur, Principal of the college, and Mr S.P. Malik, secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, Ludhiana, were the guests of honour. Sixty units of blood were collected at the camp.

PATHANKOT
Caught
: The Senior Superintendent of Police, Gurdaspur, Mr Paramod Bhan, said here on Friday that the police had arrested a vehicle thief who had stolen 300 two wheelers from Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. The accused was identified as Parvesh Dhawan of Maulana Nagar in Delhi. Later, two accomplices of the accused had also been arrested. A case has been registered.

Relief material
: A truck loaded with relief material for the victims of earthquake was dispatched from here on Friday. Mr Jatinder Kumar Sood, president, Municipal Council, flagged off the truck. Dr Arpana Gill, Director, Sahib Nursing Hospital, Mr Gurinder Singh Arora and Mr Jugraj Singh Chambal have donated liberally for the cause.

1 killed, 1 hurt: Sonu (18), a farmer of Gill Waraich village was killed and his uncle, Sukhdev Singh, was injured seriously when the tractor-trailer in which they were going to Amritsar hit by a cart near Kakka Kanidla village, 5 km from here, on Friday.
