Kuldip Bhatia

Ludhiana, October 22
A noted cardiologist from Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi, Dr T.S. Kler, expressed concern over the alarming rise in coronary artery disease (CAD) in the country, and particularly in Punjab.

In an interview here last evening, he attributed the increased incidence of the CAD to rich diet and sedentary lifestyle, which was further made worse by the intake of drugs and other intoxicants, especially in Punjab. He said on an average nearly 10 per cent of male population in the age group of over 35 years was afflicted by one or the other heart ailment while the incidence among women was around 6 per cent.

While observing that the number of cardiac patients in the region was increasing at an alarming rate and preventive measures were nowhere in sight, Dr Kler stressed that focus had to be shifted to the prevention of the CAD with more and more involvement of people at different levels.

Commenting on the prevailing apprehension among the victims of the CAD about the right course of treatment and reports of unethical practices being adopted by some of the healthcare institutions, he remarked that the consultants should not misguide the patients for their own motives and should suggest the treatment which was in the best interest of the patients. Dr Kler said the rapid advances made by the healthcare institutions and medical professionals in India during the past few years had led to a significant growth in the sector of medical tourism.
