Knee injury operated upon

Chandigarh, October 17
As a part of the ongoing Continued Medical Education (CME) programme being held at the Department of Orthopaedics, GMCH, Sector 32, Dr David Dickinson, an eminent arthroscopist from Australia today operated upon a 44-year-old patient with Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury of the right knee.

A live demonstration of the surgery was given to the orthopaedic surgeons of the region. Earlier Dr Dickinson gave a guest lecture on Reconstruction of the ACL injury using a new technique known as transfix. As many as 78 orthopaedics surgeons of the region participated in the CME. The session was chaired by Prof S.S. Gill and Prof Raj Bahadur, Head of the Orthopaedics Department of PGIMER and GMCH. TNS

Coaching centre lift Jarnail Singh trophy

Spirited Chandigarh Coaching Centre, Sector 17, lifted the Choudhary Jarnail Singh Trophy by snatching an exciting 1-0 win over the rough-and-tough Chandigarh Police Club in the well-contested final of the Chandigarh Senior (men) Football Tournament held at the Sector 17 Football Stadium here today.

The all-important goal was scored by striker Deepak Hooda in the 49th minute when he converted a minus from Anil Saini from the right flank.

After a barren first half, Coaching Centre’s Anil Kumar sent a minus from the right corner and Deepak Hooda pounced on and guided the ball into the goal.

Against the run of play, the Chandigarh Police Club launched a counter-attack in the 63 rd minute. They could have neutralised the lead but Ajay Pal’s header hit the pole before the ball bounced back into the play.

Meanwhile, winners the Chandigarh Coaching Centre, Sector 17 and runners-up the Chandigarh Police Club along with the DAV Club-8, the Golden Club, the Youngsters Club, the A.G. Audit Club, the United Club-21 and the RBI Club-30 have qualified to participate in the inaugural Chandigarh State Games being conducted by the Chandigarh Olympic Association from October 27 at various venues.

Four minutes from the half time, Pawandeep Singh of the Chandigarh Coaching Centre, Sector 17 and the Chandigarh Police Club defender Sushil nearly came to blows. However, the players from both sides and the organisers just managed to avoid the unpleasant scene.

Two minutes later, Ajay Pal of the Chandigarh Police Club slapped the Chandigarh Coaching Centre, Sector 17 Gurpartap Singh. The situation was brought under control with a timely action by referee B.L. Ganguly who flashed a yellow card to Ajay Pal.

Tanveer steers St John’s to victory

Chandigarh, October 17
A fine knock of 84 runs by Tanveer enabled St John’s School to route ICL XI by 121 runs in the semi-final of the Under-14 Ravinder Rana Memorial Cricket Tournament held at DAV School, Sector 8, here today.

Batting first, St John’s scored 209 runs in the allotted 40 overs, where Tanveer (84) and Balwinder (38) were the main contributors. In reply, the ICL team could not face the hostile approach of St John’s bowlers Manan Gupta (3 for 30) and Utkarsh ( 4 for 16) and were bundled out for 88 runs only.

Brief scores: St John’s : 209 for 8 in 40 overs (Tanveer 84, Balwinder 38, Himanshu 4 for 29, Abhilash 2 for 29).

ICL XI: 88 all out in 31 overs (Manan Vohra 19, Utkarsh 4 for 16, Manan Gupta 3 for 30).

Edmund Rice cricket tourney

Chandigarh, October 17
A fine allround performance by Subeer Hayer (43 n.o., and 2 for 22) enabled Y.P.S. Mohali, to beat St Anne’s School, Sector 32, by 3 runs in the quarterfinals of Under-11 Eighth Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket tournament played at St John’s High School, Sector 26, here, today.

In another match, St John’s (A) beat St John’s (B) team by a huge margin of 70 runs.

YPS, Mohali: 96 for 4 in 20 overs (Subeer 43 n.o., Pranav 30, Harshit 3 for 10)

St Anne’s: 93 for 6 in 20 overs (Pranan 27, Utkesh 17, Subeer 2 for 22)

Zonal badminton tourney begins today

The three-day North Zone IA and AD Badminton Tournament will start from tomorrow at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today.
Besides the host Accountant-General (AG), Haryana, the teams from the offices of A.G., Punjab, Delhi Audit, A.G. Jammu and Kashmir, A.G. Himachal Pradesh and A.G. Uttar Pradesh will participate in the tournament. The competition will be played under men’s, women’s and veteran sections.
