Computer club launched

CYBEX, a club of cyberspace explorers, was launched by the Department of Computer Applications, Chandigarh Engineering College, Landran, yesterday. The club was inaugurated by Mr Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, general secretary of the college management, while Mr Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman, was the guest of honor.

Highlighting the objectives of the club, Dr G.D. Bansal, Principal, said the basic aim of the club was to improve technical skills of the students in the fields of computer applications, computer sciences and information technology, involving software development, web-designing, networking, etc.

The club would also endeavour to bring about overall personality development of its members by improving their communication skills, body language, group discussions, dress sense, etc, so that their self-confidence for facing interviews could be developed. He added that in view of the present job scenario in the country, these qualities were as important as the technical skills.

The membership of the club is open to the students of the neighbouring institutes also. Mr Manoj Kumar Muchahari and Ms Harmeet Kaur have been made the president and vice-president of the club.

They announced that the club would organise Techno Hunt-2005 as its first Inter-College programme on October 25. Activities like on-the-spot-software development, paper presentation and technical quiz would be carried out in this programme.

Mr Dhaliwal, said the college management would provide support to the club.

Seminar on stress management held

The National Institute of Personnel Management, Punjab Chapter, organised a seminar on “Achieve your best by managing stress” by Dr Simi Waraich, a psychiatrist and presently on a special assignment with Queens Land Health, Australia, as a part of its silver jubilee celebrations here yesterday.

Dr Waraich said human resource managers who worked to motivate their staff to compete with other companies successfully, it was important to be able to manage inefficiency and absenteeism early. This could only happen if the managers were able to recognise the strengths of their team members, utilise their resources effectively, build inter-employee camaraderie and keep communication channels open. She added that increasing stress led to behavioural, physiological, emotional and cognitive effects in the form of increased eating, alcohol and drug abuse etc. all of which led to decreased efficiency and productivity.

Mr Varinder K. Verma, honorary secretary, NIPM, said the seminar was among a series of seminars being organised as a part of the silver jubilee celebrations.

Photography classes for amateurs at Art College

Chandigarh, October 14
The UT Administration has decided to start photography and art appreciation classes for amateurs at the Government College of Art, Sector 10.
These classes would be conducted by faculty members of the college and by experts from time to time. The classes would be held on Saturdays and formal applications for enrolment for these classes would be sought shortly.

Senior citizens, budding professionals, housewives and all sections of society would be eligible for the courses, which will be on first-come-first-served basis. “We are working out the finer details like fee for the course. We will most probably be having a three-month course and should be starting it by some time in next month,” stated Prof Brahm Prakash, Principal of the college.

The photography and art appreciation classes are aimed at providing the city residents with an opportunity to obtain knowledge and information about these interesting fields. The proposal has been approved by the Home Secretary, UT Administration.

Pathak releases newsletter ‘Alok’

The newsletter of the Academic Staff College, Panjab University, Chandigarh, 'Alok' , has been released by Prof. K.N. Pathak, Vice-Chancellor of the university, and Prof. G.K. Chadha, former Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, in the advisory committee meeting of Academic Staff College.

The newsletter will serve as a platform for teachers of various colleges and universities and to voice their concerns, suggestions and ideas on academically relevant issues. It will also inform them about different academic activities held at Academic Staff College and the university and will aspire towards ideal of 'quality education through personal efforts'. Prof. R.C. Sobti, Honorary Director of Academic Staff College, is the Editor of the newsletter and Dr. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director of the college, is working Editor.

Dhillon-Ranu group sweeps poll

Mohali, October 14
The Dhillon-Ranu group has swept the elections of the Punjab School Education Board (Non-teaching) Employees Association for the fifth time in a row the results of which were announced here this evening.

Mr Gurdeep Singh Dhillon was declared president after he defeated his immediate rival, Mr Amar Singh Dhaliwal, of the Maujewal-Dhaliwal group. Mr Dhillon had secured 828 votes while Mr Dhaliwal was polled 656 votes.

The entire panel of the Dhillon-Ranu group has won the elections each candidate defeating the immediate rival by a margin of more than 150 votes. Mr Jasbir Singh Gill, who fought the elections for the post of vice-president, got the maximum number of votes (838). He defeated his immediate rival, Major singh Binder, by a margin of 214 votes. Mr Bhagwant Singh Bedi was declared the general secretary by securing 830 votes while Mr Ranjit Singh Mann became the senior vice-president by getting 832 votes. The maximum number of votes that a candidate of the Kanwar-Dholewal group could get were only 159.

Online placement test on Oct 16, 23, 30

The online Common Placement Test (CPT-2005) being conducted by the National Technology Foundation, Hyderabad, will be held at the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi, on October 16, 23 and 30.

Mr Naveen Kumar, system analyst of the institute attended a CPT workshop conducted by the foundation at Ghaziabad. The test will shortlist engineering students of all branches for placement interviews by leading companies.

After the workshop, a surprise written test was conducted by organisers to judge the performance of the participants. Among the 83 participants from all over India, Naveen Kumar was awarded a Best Performer Trophy and a certificate.

History Dept controversy ends

The ongoing controversy in the Department of History, Panjab University, finally came to an end today. The postgraduate Board of Studies of the department at a meeting today, decided to revert its earlier decision and gave back the powers to check the answersheets to the department’s faculty.

The Board of Studies it is learnt, has also asked the faculty to give suggestions, if any, to improve the examination system. The faculty had been protesting against the decision of the Board of not allowing the department teachers to check the answersheets of MA I and II students as it has been observed the teachers are biased and there is no transparency.

PTU youth fest begins

The Punjab Technical University Inter-zonal Youth Festival (Zone III) today started with a day full of literary and cultural activities at the Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology (CIET), Rajpura.

The festival was inaugurated by Mr S.P. Arora, Estate Officer, HUDA. In his inaugural speech, Mr Arora conveyed satisfaction in the enthusiastic response from the students and felt these festivals helped in promoting creativity among students.

The three-day event has about 20 engineering, pharmacy and management colleges affiliated to the PTU, Jalandhar, of the region, taking part in various events such as singing, dancing, debate, elocution quiz etc.

B.Ed entrance test rescheduled

The B.Ed entrance test (Correspondence) of Panjab University, which was to begin at 10 a.m. on October 23, will now start at 12 noon. Now the timings of papers will be — Paper-I 12 noon to 1.30 p.m.; and Paper-II from 1.40 p.m. to 2.25 p.m., according to the Controller of Examinations, P.U. — TNS

New Release
A complex love story

Balaji Telefilms’ “Koi Aap Sa” is again, very different from its sex comedy “Kya Kool Hain Hum”. This one has been produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor. The “K” factor is back on the silver screen. “Koi Aap Sa” has Aftab Shivdasani, Natasha (Kavyanjali serial fame) and model-turned-actress Dipannita Sharma in lead roles. Partho Mitra has directed this complex love story, which opened on Friday at Fun Republic, Mani Majra.

After “Salaam Namste”, the viewers will watch yet another film on “live-in” relationship. It will be interesting to see what Balaji banner and director Partho Mitra combination brings up. The buzz is that “Koi Aap Sa” is a different love story which forays into the lifestyles of urbanised youth. The film has a tagline — “Friends may not be lovers but lovers have to be friends”.

The screenplay is by Mahesh Pandey and cinematography by Deepak Mavlankar. Sameer has penned the lyrics for composer Himesh Reshammiya. He has come up with melodious tracks. He delivers some good compositions with some fine blend of romantically nurtured lyrics. D.J. Akbar has a couple of remixed tracks.

“Koi Aap Sa” is hugely hyped and it will be good to see how Balaji Telefilms has attempted a complex love story. — DP

A slice from Sikh history

A special show of the classic historical play “Sirhind di Dewaar” was staged at the Punjab Vidhan Sabha complex on Thursday evening by the Patiala-based Harpal Tiwana Foundation. The Vidhan Sabha Speaker, Dr Kewal Krishan, presided over the function largely-attended by members of the legislative Assembly.

The creative director of the foundation, Manpal Tiwana, who also played the lead role of Wazir Khan, disclosed that the play was a slice from the Sikh history depicting the supreme sacrifice of the Sahibzadas, Fateh Singh and Zorawar Singh, and a tribute to them during the 300th anniversary of their martyrdom.

The main feature of the play was the musical score by noted ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, who rendered soulful shabads. Besides Manpal, Neena Tiwana, Tarshinder Soni, Sukhwnt Sohi and Rupinder Rupi played important roles.

Comedy album released

Chandigarh, October 14
“Chakk Lo Jhola”, a Punjabi comedy album, was released by Mr P. Khurana, an astrologer, here today. Produced by Pal Music Company, the parody and songs have been written by Ashwani Kumar. Ravinder Ravi and Narinder Nindi have lent their voices to the songs.

“Our endeavour was to promote new talent,” informed Mr Om Sharma and Mr Gurcharan Capoor. Earlier, the music company had come out with several hit albums such as “Kar Kripa”, “Maa Jayanti Mahima”, “Shararat”, “Zulfan”, “Bach Kudiye” and “Tanha Tanha”. TNS
