Blood test camp
Panchkula, October 2 The sabha also organised a free eye, dental and medical camp at Sood Bhavan Chandigarh, which got an overwhelming response. About 350 patients were examined at the camp. A team of doctors from the GMCH, Chandigarh, conducted check ups. Medicines were given free of cost to patients while blood tests for senior citizens were done free of cost. Members of the Kerala Sastra Manch and Lioness Club 321-A2 also participated in the camp. |
Kendriya Vidyalaya sports meet from today
Chandigarh, October 2 Dr (Mrs) S.P. Shergill, Principal, KV-31 which is the Kendriya Vidyalayas’ Regional Office, said, “Around 7,000 students will be participating in either of the 21 disciplines to be held at various venues, including the Sector 42 stadium where the hockey match will be held tomorrow after its inauguration. We have already received around 400 participants from Mumbai, Kolkata, Jammu and Chennai.” Kendriya Vidyalaya, Air Force Station High Grounds, Chandigarh, is hosting kho-kho, kabaddi and volleyball (girls) during this five-day national meet. “Students representing 18 regions from across the country will be participating in this tournament and a significant part of the meet is the “Cultural Bonanza and Bara Khana” to be organised on the school ground”, said Ms S.K. Bhatia, Principal of the school. Kendriya Vidyalaya, Zirakpur, will host girls’ teams of hockey from 11 regions. The opening ceremony will be held tomorrow at 9.30 am on 474 Regt hockey ground (K-Area) Zirakpur. The meet will be declared open by the school managing body chairman, Brig. G.D. Chadha. KV-29 , OCF, is conducting table tennis and badminton matches at Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, here, and Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Sector 3, Panchkula, respectively. The events will be held under three categories, i.e. under-14, under-17 and under-19. |
Sachin’s best is yet to come, says Archrekar
Chandigarh, October 2 With this statement he tried to put stop to the controversy about Sachin’s dwindling form. The Dronacharya awardee, Archrekar, is of the view that Sachin should use a lighter bat. “This will help him to improve his form after taking over the game again,” he said. When asked whether Sachin should take up captaincy if given the opportunity, he answered in the affirmative. Archrekar visited St John’s Cricket Academy, Sector 26, to watch the training sessions there. He also gave valuable batting tips to the trainees and told them about the right way to play at front foot as well as back foot. |

German soccer expert to hone coaches’ skills
Chandigarh, October 2 At a brief interaction, Frank said Indian football was gradually coming up and in few years from now the sport would be more of a household name. He said no doubt compared to Europe, Asian continents India was still far behind. It was the lack of quality coaches and lesser emphasis on learning new tactics why Indian soccer had not done well. He was confident that the new coach education structure to be followed by Indian soccer would also had a change. Frank who is now the Consultant Director, Vision Asia, a project of the Asian Football Confederation, said with his vast experience at the world level, he was determined to upgrade the skills of the Indian soccer coaches. On the question of right age to take to football, German coach said in their country it was four years. But till eight or nine years one can had fun games but after nine years a child has to learn the fundamentals of the sport. Keeping that in view, The All-India Football Federation has allotted Youth Development Coach Education Workshop to the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) which will be held at DAV Senior Secondary School in Sector 8 from October 3 to 12, Frank said, adding that after accomplishing the job in Chandigarh he would move to Kolkata, Bangalore and finally to Goa before flying back to Germany in mid-December. Mr Arunesh Sharma of the AFC said he was grateful to Mr Ravinder Talwar, President, CFA, in accepting the challenge of giving a thrust to the soccer in the city. Meanwhile, twentyeight coaches from all over the country will attend the 10-day workshop. The coaches will attend the theory classes while the practical session would be conducted at the Sector 17 football stadium. The AIFF has directed the CFA to arrange one team each of Under-17 and Under-14 for practical session. Each team will consist of 24 players.
