Australian docs visit Rattan institute

Students of Rattan Institute of Nursing and Ayurveda, Sohana, today interacted with a team of doctors from Australia, who are practising the Chinese traditional medicine.

Led by the internationally renowned Chinese medicine expert, Dr L. Wong, the team, including Dr Glennys Savage and Dr James Middletown, also “treated” patients during their interaction with college students and staff.

Dr Glennys Savage, who is the vice-principal of the Academy of Chinese Medicine in Australia, told the students about the similarities between Ayurvedic form of medicine and their own.

Blood test camp

More than 150 persons availed of the free blood test facility at a camp organised by the Sood Sabha at Sood Bhavan, Sector 10, today. A free haemoglobin test was conducted for women.

The sabha also organised a free eye, dental and medical camp at Sood Bhavan Chandigarh, which got an overwhelming response. About 350 patients were examined at the camp. A team of doctors from the GMCH, Chandigarh, conducted check ups.

Medicines were given free of cost to patients while blood tests for senior citizens were done free of cost. Members of the Kerala Sastra Manch and Lioness Club 321-A2 also participated in the camp.

Kendriya Vidyalaya sports meet from today

Kendriya Vidyalaya sports enthusiasts have started converging from all over India at KVs in and around Chandigarh to participate in the 36th KVs National Sports Meet. The opening ceremony will be held tomorrow at 4 pm at the hockey stadium, Sector 42, Chandigarh. Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), Administrator, Chandigarh, will be the chief guest while Mr Rang Lal Jamuda, Commissioner, KVs, New Delhi, will preside over the function.

Dr (Mrs) S.P. Shergill, Principal, KV-31 which is the Kendriya Vidyalayas’ Regional Office, said, “Around 7,000 students will be participating in either of the 21 disciplines to be held at various venues, including the Sector 42 stadium where the hockey match will be held tomorrow after its inauguration.

We have already received around 400 participants from Mumbai, Kolkata, Jammu and Chennai.”

Kendriya Vidyalaya, Air Force Station High Grounds, Chandigarh, is hosting kho-kho, kabaddi and volleyball (girls) during this five-day national meet. “Students representing 18 regions from across the country will be participating in this tournament and a significant part of the meet is the “Cultural Bonanza and Bara Khana” to be organised on the school ground”, said Ms S.K. Bhatia, Principal of the school.

Kendriya Vidyalaya, Zirakpur, will host girls’ teams of hockey from 11 regions. The opening ceremony will be held tomorrow at 9.30 am on 474 Regt hockey ground (K-Area) Zirakpur. The meet will be declared open by the school managing body chairman, Brig. G.D. Chadha.

KV-29 , OCF, is conducting table tennis and badminton matches at Table Tennis Hall, Sector 23, here, and Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Sector 3, Panchkula, respectively.

The events will be held under three categories, i.e. under-14, under-17 and under-19.

Sachin’s best is yet to come, says Archrekar

“Sachin’s best era will come and he will hit a minimum 50 centuries in international cricket,” stated Ramakant Archrekar, the mentor and coach of Sachin Tendulkar, who was in the city recently on a personal visit.

With this statement he tried to put stop to the controversy about Sachin’s dwindling form.

The Dronacharya awardee, Archrekar, is of the view that Sachin should use a lighter bat. “This will help him to improve his form after taking over the game again,” he said.

When asked whether Sachin should take up captaincy if given the opportunity, he answered in the affirmative. Archrekar visited St John’s Cricket Academy, Sector 26, to watch the training sessions there. He also gave valuable batting tips to the trainees and told them about the right way to play at front foot as well as back foot.

Shaleen, Mansimran best shooters

Shaleen Chauhan and Mansimran Singh were declared best shooters in the women’s and men’s section, respectively, in the 30th Chandigarh State Shooting Championship which concluded today at the Sector 25 Patiali Ki Rao Shooting Ranges.

Thirteen-year-old Akanksha Arora of Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, shot to glory by winning a gold medal in the Air Pistol (NR) sub-junior women section. Asavari Tayal secured a silver medal in this section.

Mr Jasjit Randhawa, Cooperation Minister, Punjab, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.

The karate team of DAV, Surajpur, and the SNS Karate Club-22 were declared the joint winners of the 14th Chandigarh State Open Karate Championship-2005 held at Skating Rink, Sector 10 here today.

The championship was organised by the Amateur Karate Association of Chandigarh. The results are as follows:

Sector 7 govt school clinch boxing trophy

Government High School, Sector 7, lifted the championship trophy with 15 points in the 20th Chandigarh Sub-Junior State Boxing Championship at Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today.

Sharda Sarvhitkari School, Sector 40, won the runners-up trophy with 11 points.

The Best Boxer Award went to Alam Singh of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41. He beat Ravi of United Club in the 60-kg category.

Gian Jyoti athletes excel

Students of Gian Jyoti Public School here brought laurels to the school in CBSE Cluster XIII for boys and girls in Athletics Championship 2005-2006. The participants which were trained under the guidance of Ms Neelam Thakur bagged many prizes and certificates. The championship was organised by S.D. Public School, Sector 32.

German soccer expert to hone coaches’ skills

Torsten Frank Spittler, a certified sports instructor and a professional soccer coach of Germany, is in the city at the invitation of the Asian Football Confederation to train and interact with Indian coaches and players.

At a brief interaction, Frank said Indian football was gradually coming up and in few years from now the sport would be more of a household name. He said no doubt compared to Europe, Asian continents India was still far behind. It was the lack of quality coaches and lesser emphasis on learning new tactics why Indian soccer had not done well.

He was confident that the new coach education structure to be followed by Indian soccer would also had a change. Frank who is now the Consultant Director, Vision Asia, a project of the Asian Football Confederation, said with his vast experience at the world level, he was determined to upgrade the skills of the Indian soccer coaches.

On the question of right age to take to football, German coach said in their country it was four years. But till eight or nine years one can had fun games but after nine years a child has to learn the fundamentals of the sport.

Keeping that in view, The All-India Football Federation has allotted Youth Development Coach Education Workshop to the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) which will be held at DAV Senior Secondary School in Sector 8 from October 3 to 12, Frank said, adding that after accomplishing the job in Chandigarh he would move to Kolkata, Bangalore and finally to Goa before flying back to Germany in mid-December.

Mr Arunesh Sharma of the AFC said he was grateful to Mr Ravinder Talwar, President, CFA, in accepting the challenge of giving a thrust to the soccer in the city.

Meanwhile, twentyeight coaches from all over the country will attend the 10-day workshop. The coaches will attend the theory classes while the practical session would be conducted at the Sector 17 football stadium.

The AIFF has directed the CFA to arrange one team each of Under-17 and Under-14 for practical session. Each team will consist of 24 players. The following coaches have been recommended to attend the workshop. Chandigarh: Surinder Kumar, Surinder Singh, B. L. Ganguly, Dinesh Sharma, R. K. Bhanot, G. D. Malhotra and Rakesh Bakshi (coordinator).

City team for cricket tourney announced

The team which will represent Chandigarh in the 1st Senior North Zone Twenty 20 cricket championship was announced today.

The championship is being organised here from October 6 to 9 by the Twenty 20 Cricket Federation of India.

Six teams from North Zone (Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttaranchal and Chandigarh) have confirmed their participation in the championship.

The Chandigarh is: Madan Lal Saini, Ajay Bhardwaj, Vikram Verma, Abhimanyu Rana, Gaurav Kumar, Rockey, Neeraj Chaudhary, Sunny Behl, Sumit Kamboj, Bhagwant Nagra, Gurinder Saini, Akaitab Bhattacharya, Saransh Kharbanda, Simranjeet Singh and Sukhwinder Singh.
