PAU, New Holland Tractors sign MoU

Ludhiana, September 22
Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, today exhorted engineers to develop expertise on rational and judicious usage of tractors and their farm machinery to become internationally acceptable in the globalised world.

He was speaking at the signing of an MoU between Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and New Holland Tractors India (Pvt) Ltd, New Delhi, for developing a collaborative training facility for undergraduate students of the PAU and other technical manpower of both organisations in the area of farm tractors.

He said under the programme, a highly sophisticated training workshop was being developed at the Department of Farm Power and Machinery, PAU, with the joint efforts of both organisations.

The MoU was signed by Dr S.K. Sondhi, Dean, College of Agricultural Engineering, and Mr D.K. Dhamija, Director Marketing, New Holland Tractors India (Pvt) Ltd.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sondhi said with the advent of the WTO, the movement of machinery had become worldwide and such training programmes would help in enhancing the knowledge base of users and service providers to meet the emerging challenges in farm machanisation.

Mr Dhamija appreciated the role of the PAU in Indian agriculture and professional contributions made by agricultural engineers in tractor industry and rural economy.

Dr V.K. Sharma, Registrar, PAU, and renowned expert in farm power and machinery, congratulated both organisations and appreciated the efforts of Dr S.S. Ahuja, Head Department of Farm Power and Machinery, for undertaking the initiative on human resource development.

Dr Ahuja said these training programmes would not only help in improving the quality and reliability of farming operations but also make the usage of tractor more cost effective and trouble-free.

Dr Surendra Singh, Senior Resident Engineer, proposed the vote of thanks.

Kalkat for rural reform movement

A former Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University and chairman of the Punjab State Farmers’ Commission, Dr G.S. Kalkat, today called for a rural reform movement in the state to fight social evils.

He identified six problems that have affected the rural people. These include declining water table, falling rural income, drug addiction, poor rural sanitation, mindless expenditure and improper use of the financial assistance from banks and falling standards of rural education.

Addressing the inaugural function at the annual Kisan Mela at PAU here, he said of late there had been an unfortunate trend of lavish expenditure among the rural people. He said big farmers spent huge money on marriages and other social functions as they could afford it. But the trend had been imitated by the poor and marginal farmers also. Since they could not afford it, they take loan.

He also laid emphasis on rural sanitation. He regretted that the villages in Punjab had poor sanitation. He said although the fields presented a beautiful look, but the villages remained dirty. “There is a dire need to ensure proper sanitation in rural areas to make atmosphere clean,” he said.

He also expressed concern over the falling standard of education in rural areas.

He said the standard of education in these areas was very low. He said this needed to be corrected at the earliest.

He also drew attention towards the decline in water table in the state.

Exhibition on drug de-addiction at PAU

Ludhiana, September 22
A two-day exhibition on drugs of different kinds and their ill effects was opened today at Thapar Hall of Punjab Agricultural University by Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle (GGSSC).

The chief secretary of GGSSC, Mr Charan Kamal Singh, said the exhibition covered extensively the drugs to which people of different age groups were getting addicted to. The visitors were being made aware of several diseases that the drug addicts could contract, he added.

The exhibition attracted a large number of farmers and students as Kissan Mela is going on at PAU.

Project director Gurpinder Singh said the study circle was consistently creating awareness through its exhibitions and campaigns against drug addiction.

Freshers party at DMCH

A function was organised in Dumra Auditorium at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here on Tuesday to formally introduce the management members, teaching faculty and administrative staff to the students of 2005 batch and their parents.

The vice-president of the managing committee, Mr Dharam Vir Bector, welcomed the students. The faculty interacted with students and their parents.

Hospital inauguration today

It will be a dream-coming-true for Namdhari chief Baba Jagjit Singh when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh formally inaugurates the Satguru Partap Singh Apollo Hospital in the city tomorrow.

For Baba Jagjit Singh, whose headquarters are at Bhaini Sahib on Ludhiana-Chandigarh road, the state-of-the-art healthcare institution will turn out to be a yet another medium of serving humanity.

Mr H.S. Hanspal, former president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and president of Namdhari Darbar, recalls that Baba Jagjit Singh had been nursing the idea of setting up a multi-speciality hospital for some time.

During a visit to a prominent hospital in Bangalore long back, he had commented that the hospital was clean and devoid of smell normally identified with hospitals.

He had quipped at that time: “Whenever we (the Namdharis) set up a hospital, we shall make sure that it does not smell of disease and suffering.”

It was with this commitment that the sect had joined hands with a group of hospitals to establish SPS Apollo Hospital.

The hospital promises to offer quality healthcare services to people in the region.

Sports fraternity hails Pargat’s appointment

The sports fraternity here has hailed the appointment of Padma Shree and former captain of the national hockey team Pargat Singh as the Director, Sports, Punjab. While appreciating the state government’s decision to appoint the former Olympian Pargat Singh to head the Sports Directorate, sportspersons, sports organisers and office-bearers of different sports organisations have expressed hope that this would prove a milestone in the promotion of sports in the state. In separate messages, they congratulated Pargat and wished him good luck.

Mulla Ram is best shooter of IAF

Mulla Ram was declared the best shooter of the Indian Air Force on the concluding day of the all-India level Inter-Command Air Force Small Arms Shooting Championship at Air Force Range, Halwara, today.

The concluding day function was presided over by group captain Rakesh Marwaha. While addressing shooters from eight commands of the IAF, Marwaha expressed hope that dedication and persistence of the shooters would produce a contingent of shooters by the end of next year which would represent the Air Force in national and inter-national events. He appreciated the role of organisers for letting quality shooters come forward for the event.

Wg Cdr Rajwant Singh, organising secretary of the event, said Western Air Command (WAC) was declared the overall champions on the basis of performance of their shooters in rifle, sten machine carbine, pistol and skeet (single trap and double trap) shooting. South Western Air Command and Eastern Air Command were declared the first and second overall runners up, respectively.

Around 150 shooters from Technical Command, Maintenance Command, Southern Air Commands, Western Air Command, South Western Air Command, Eastern Air command, Central Air Command and Air Force Headquarters had participated in the championship.

Wg Cdr Rajwant Singh said the winners would be representing their respective commands in Mavlanker Championship scheduled to be held at Edipy, Kerala and National Shooting Championship scheduled to commence in Hyderabad on December 1.

Pandianam college win PTU football tournament

Ludhiana, September 22
SBS College, Pandianam, today quelled a strong challenge from hosts Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College (GNDEC), Ludhiana, 5-4 to emerge champions in the Punjab Technical University Inter-College Football Tournament held at GNDEC ground here. The issue was resolved through penalty shootout as the final remained tied at 1-1 at the end of the golden goal period.

Earlier, in the semifinals, GNDEC proved too good for GGS College, Talwandi Sabo, 4-0 while SBS College, Pandiana, prevailed upon IET, Bhaddal 1-0.

Arjuna awardee and honorary general secretary of the Punjab Football Association Inder Singh was the chief guest at the prize distribution function. Dr Surinder Bir Singh, Principal of the GNDE College, along with Mr Sivtar Singh Bajwa, President, District Football Association, Prof Kanwaljit Singh, Prof Kulwant Singh, Mr Gurmail Singh, Prof Khushdeep Singh, Mr A.K. Sachdeva, co-ordinator, PTU, were also present on this occasion.
