Infected water claims two lives in city
Ludhiana, September 19
The tall claims of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation of supplying potable water fell flat today when two women in the local Jawahar Nagar and Labour Colony died after suffering from diarrhoea and many other residents fell ill allegedly due to contaminated water.

Awareness camp in affected area
Ludhiana, September 19
A team of doctors from the Public Health Department of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation will organise an awareness camp in the Jawahar Nagar area in the wake of an outbreak of a water-borne disease.

PM to inaugurate SPS hospital on Sept 23
Ludhiana, September 19
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will formally inaugurate the Satguru Partap Singh Apollo Hospital here on September 23. Stating this at a news conference here today, Mr H.S. Hanspal, president of the Namdhari Darbar and former chief of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, said aligning with the mission of its parent institution, the SPS Apollo Hospital was ready to offer a gamut of healthcare services, with the state-of-the-art technology and ultramodern healthcare delivery system.

Real estate prices soar along Ferozepore Road

With some malls and commercial complexes coming up along Ferozepore Road, land prices have started to shoot up. Real estate dealers have said during the past one year the land prices along the road have witnessed an unprecedented increase.

Now, pay electricity bills through machines

With a view to making bill payment easier for consumers, the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) inaugurated two automatic electronic bill payment machines, “Sevak”, here today.

Shopkeepers stage dharna against contractors

Shopkeepers of the Electronic Goods Market today staged a dharna against contractors and some employees of the Municipal Corporation, for allegedly forcing them to park their vehicles inside the multi-storeyed parking area of the civic body here today.

Cong sweeps Sahnewal poll
Sahnewal, September 19
The Congress has swept the Municipal Council poll at Sahnewal town. Out of the 13 wards, eight candidates of the Congress, three Independent, two of the joint alliance have won.

Cong wins 6 seats in Mullanpur Dakha
Ludhiana, September 19
The Congress won six seats out of 13 in the Mullanpur Dakha Nagar Panchayat poll, results of which were declared late last evening due to recounting in three wards. The major upset was the defeat of sitting president Prem Inder Goga who lost the battle to his opponent by 141 votes.

Poor show by Cong at Mandi Ahmedgarh

Candidates supported by the SAD and the BJP got the better of those backed by the Congress in the civic body elections at Malaudh village and the town on Sunday. Factionalism among Congress leaders was the reason behind the poor show by the Congress-backed candidates.

Six a piece for Cong, SAD-BJP alliance

In the Nagar Panchayat elections to 13 Wards of the town, the two main political parties — Congress and the SAD-BJP alliance — managed to get six seats each where as the Third Front achieved victory only in one seat, which is likely to play a vital role so far as majority is concerned.

PSEB to tap international players
Ludhiana, September 19
The PSEB plans to tap international players for an additional 1,000 MW of power. The bidding process for the purpose is likely to start within three months. “As the demand for power is registering an 8 to 10 per cent increase annually, we have decided to go in for international bidding,” said Mr Y.S. Ratra, Chairman of the PSEB. He said the board had appointed CRISIL as its consultant.

Fast enters 6th day
Ludhiana, September 19
The fast unto death by Mr Sat Pal Sharma, the seniormost Accounts Officer, and Mr R. S. Arora, the seniormost Admn-cum-Accounts Officer, Punjab Agricultural University, entered the sixth day today. These officers have resorted to this struggle as their pleas to the university and the state and the Central governments yielded no result.

Man found dead
Khamano, September 19
Shyam Singh (45), a resident of the nearby Ranwan village, was found dead in a train at Amritsar railway station. According to the family members of the deceased, Shyam was working in a factory in Uganda for the past three years and they had no information of his coming back to India. They came to know about the incident only after the railway police informed them on telephone.

1 killed in accident
Jagraon, September 19
Jagir Singh, a resident of Takhan Badh, was killed, while another person, Nek Singh, was injured when an unidentified vehicle hit their scooter (PB-10AD-5740). A case has been registered under Sections 304-A, 337, 279 and 427 of the IPC on the statement of Baldev Singh of the same village.

Anti-dumping duty: probe begins

The Directorate of Anti-Dumping has initiated an inquiry into 13 cases, involving several countries, following complaints from the domestic industry for imposing anti-dumping duty on various product categories.

One-day workshop for farmers held
Ludhiana, September 19
A one-day workshop on job avenues, skill development and training needs was organised by the College of Agriculture, PAU, Ludhiana. Dr Jugraj Singh Dhillon, former Dean, College of Veterinary Science, said children of farmers residing in villages should be motivated to acquire agricultural education so that they could take up agriculture scientifically.

Kids made familiar with vegetables
Ludhiana, September 19
The Montessori and primary section of Ryan International School looked like a shop of a “green grocers” as it was stocked with different vegetables and fruits. The idea behind the whole exercise was to make the students familiar with their names and food value. A quiz was also organised on vegetables. Display boards looked vibrant with cutouts of various fruits and vegetables.
