Aero-modelling show thrills students

Ludhiana, September 15
The desire to fly in the open skies could be evinced in the eyes of students of Saraswati Modern School, Pratap Singhwala, who took part in an impressive aero-modelling extravaganza on the school ground here this morning.

The show, first of its kind for the students, was presented by Mr Mohinderpal Singh and his team from the Global Space Aviation, Patiala. The children liked the spectacular air demonstration which was an attempt to enthuse the students to accumulate their latent technical potential.

The show was presided over by Mr G S Bahia, Assistant Commissioner, Ludhiana.

Mohinderpal is a glider pilot and a renowned flier and has attended Paris Air Show in Le Bourget in 1999 and 2003, and various flying events in the UK and Switzerland. The aerobatics by the remote control and control line models by the aero-modellers were mind boggling and thrilled the students.

For the most part of the show, the students were excited. Some displayed models flown included Oniel, Holbrook, and Peacemaker.

The headmaster of the school, Mr Prashant Kumar Lal, himself an aero modeller, gave an interesting commentary on the planes’ flying ,diving, looping which further made the aero show more interesting.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune he said: “I want to encourage students to take part in aero modelling. I am planning to get chuck planes made of cheap wood, which the children can chuck and they fly some distance before land in the Aero-Modelling Club which we plan to start shortly in the school.”

The show was also appreciated by Ms Kamla Jain, founder of the school, Brigadier Harkirat Singh (retd), formerly a lecturer in AMC, Pune, and Captain SP Singh.

Some teachers of the school were Ms Reena Sharma, Ms Madhu Ghai, Ms Navjot Kamal, Master Nikhil Jain from Pratap Singhwala: Ankur Mehta and Anjal Kaushal from Civil Lines Branch were given pilot training on the occasion.

Seminar on career options

Ludhiana, September 15
A seminar on “Career options in India and abroad” was held at Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology, Chandigarh Road, yesterday by the Top Careers and You (TCY) group.

It was a two-hour session which was attended by more than 100 pre-final and final year students. Mr S.S. Grewal, head of the department of management studies, gave the welcome note and coordinated the show.

Mr Kamal Wadhera, CEO, TCY group, spoke on the topic. He discussed on when and how to prepare for the competitive examination, the various examinations and their relevance, specialisation in MBA, salary structure, etc. His focus was on combining the strengths and weaknesses of engineering students vis-a-vis the options available.

An aptitude test was also conducted. The TCY will conduct this test on the pattern of CAT on November 20 nationwide. It was a half-an-hour test consisting of verbal ability, quantitative aptitude, data analysis and reasoning sections. The analysis and complete feedback would be submitted to the college authorities. The students had and interactive session with TCY experts.

Function at college: A “Thanks giving function” was organised here today by the students of BA/B Sc/B Com I at Government College for Women to thank seniors for the warm welcome they had accorded to them earlier. A variety programme consisting of songs, dances, skits, mono acting was presented. It was highly appreciated by the audience. Ms Prabhjot Kaur, principal of the college, presided over the function.

Among others present on the function were vice-principal Narinder Sekhon, Ms Sushma Gupta, Ms Balbir Bajaj and Ms Deepak Pabreja. The compering was done by Priyanka and Upasna. In her concluding speech, principal congratulated the students for their efforts in putting up such a programme.

Seminar on dietary habits: A seminar about healthy dietary habits was held at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology here today. Ms Molly Joshi, head of the department of dietary, CMCH, delivered a lecture on “Do we live to eat or eat to live”. Ms Joshi has many achievements to her credit and is the representative of the International Confederation of Dietetic Association.

During the course of her lecture, she highlighted the adverse effects of changing life-style and unhealthy eating habits. She laid emphasis on the benefits of regular exercise and balanced and nutritious diet. She advised the students to avoid fastfood and cultivate healthy eating habit so as to avoid various kinds of diseases like hypertension and diabetes which occur due to obesity.

While addressing the students, she stressed the need to create awareness about healthy living and balanced food among mothers as well as children. The director of he institute. Mr Kuldip Singh, and the coordinator, Mr G.S. Dua, were present in the seminar.

Students show creative skills

Khanna, September 15
A creative writing competition was held at A S College by the English Literary Society of the college here today.
Around 35 candidates took part in the contest. The Principal of the College, Dr R.S. Jhanji, praised the society for holding such a contest.

Prof Sudha Sharma, Head, Department of English, said such competitions were a must to explore and enhance the creativity of students.

Gourav Dudeja of B.Sc II, Sukhdeep Kaur of B.Sc III and Ruhil Sood stood first , second and third, respectively.

Benu Nagpal, Deepti Gangwal and Miridul Sood were given consolation prizes.

Prof Navdeep Sharma, coordinator of the society, and Ms Manu Verma were also present.

Contests mark Hindi Divas

Ludhiana, September 15
Spring Dale Senior Secondary Public School, Ludhiana, celebrated Hindi Divas here yesterday for classes I to V. Competition for students were divided into two groups — Group A from classes I to III and Group B from classes IV to V. Group-wise results are as follows:

Group A — Manisha of class III, (I), Palak of class II and Aurushi of class II (2), Manpreet of class III and Adivitiya of class I (3) and Baleen of class II consolation.

Group B: Harkiran Kaur of class IV (I), Jasjeet Raikhi of class V and Ravleen Kaur of class V (2), Harbeer Singh of class IV (3) and Ariti of class IV (consolation).

A handwriting competition of students from classes IV & V was also conducted.

The results are as follows: Archit of class V (1), Gurjeet Singh of class IV (2) and Sukhpreet Singh of class IV (3).

Prizes were awarded to winners by Ms Avinash Kaur Walia, director and Ms Sandeep Raikhi, Principal.

Camp on environment

Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 1
The Subhas Chander Bose Troop of Scouts organised a “save the environment” camp under the Prime Minister Shield programme at Government Senior Secondary School, Kanganwal village, near here. Besides awakening students about the importance of hygienic environment, the organisers planted saplings in and around the school premises.

Mr Ranjit Singh, group leader, and Mr Bhupinder Singh Bath explained the role of plants in maintaining the environment. Mr Jarnail Singh and Dr Parminder Singh, leaders of the Rovers troop, highlighted the problems related to environmental pollution. The planted saplings were adopted by various students, who took an oath to nurture plants allotted to them.

Talent hunt at Malwa College

A talent hunt show was organised in the girls’ wing of Malwa college, Bondli, Samrala, under the guidance of its in charge Kulwinder Kaur . More than 50 students participated in the cultural function.

Miss Fresher contest was the main attraction of the show in which Harmanjit Kaur was declared Miss Fresher whereas Amandeep and Mandeep were declared the first and second runner-up, respectively.

Prof Baldeep Singh, Dean, Cultural Activities, welcomed the chief guest, Mrs. Malkit Kaur Dhillon, and the guest of honour, Mrs. Manjit Dhillon. The guests were also the judges.

Lions Club honours teachers

The Lions Club (Ludhiana Greater) felicitated Mr K. V. V. V. Shrivastava, a retired teacher of School for Deaf and Dumb, attached to Bal Bhavan, and Mr V. K. Shrivastava, a senior teacher and in charge, Bal Bhavan, and Ms Inder Pal Kaur, Principal of Government Primary School, attached to Bal Bhavan, on the premises of the bhavan in Sarabha Nagar here today.

Students of Bal Bhavan presented a cultural programme. Club members distributed sweets among the students of the institute. Lion K. S. Sethi, district cabinet secretary (projects), District 321-F, attended the function.

Teleconference at IGNOU centres

Khanna, September 15
To address the induction meeting of undergraduate students of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), a teleconference would be organised at five centres in the state on September 17, according to Mr K.D. Parsad, Regional Director of the university for Punjab and Chandigarh.

Mr Parsad told mediapersons here today that on September 17, the VC of the university, Mr H.P. Dixit, would address the students at IGNOU centres in Khanna, Layalpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, Guru Nanak National College, Ludhiana, PU Centre, and Punjabi University, Patiala.

Book exhibition gets under way

Ludhiana, September 15
A three-day book exhibition went under way at Government College for Women today. It is being organised by Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle (GGSSC).
Mr Gurpinder Singh, General Secretary of the GGSSC, said the exhibition was being held with the aim of making students aware of religious literature. By reading such religious books the students could gain a lot of knowledge about their religious ideology. — OC

Paediatricians to meet in Ludhiana on September 18

Ludhiana, September 15
More than 250 paediatricians are expected to attend Lodhicon - 2005, a one-day state-level conference of the Punjab state branch of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics (IAP) here on September 18.

Addressing a news conference here today, Dr Harinder Singh, organising secretary stated that the aim of holding the conclave was to help specialised doctors to update knowledge.

Dr S.S. Luthra, president, IAP, Ludhiana, said the conference would not only provide a platform for sharing personal experience, improving clinical knowledge and discussing new trends but also help in increasing unity among the paediatric fraternity.

Dr Harinder Singh said Dr Y. K. Amdekar, professor of paediatrics, Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, will be the chief guest. He will deliver a lecture on “recognition of sick child and management of septic shock.” Dr Rajinder Kaur, Civil Surgeon, Ludhiana, will be the guest of honour at the conference.

Dr Anita Khalil, professor (retd) of paediatric cardiology at MAMC, Delhi, will speak on “early diagnosis, management and referral of a new born with congenital heart disease, Dr Rachna Sehgal, consultant, Safdurjung Hospital, New Delhi, will discuss ‘early diagnosis and management of intra-uterine infections’, Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, will present a paper on ‘electrolyte imbalance in critically ill child’ and Dr Jugesh Chhatwal, Professor and head, Department of paediatrics at Christian Medical College and Hospital, will speak on ‘hyperpyrexia- very high fever, in emergency with special reference to malaria, typhoid, dengue’.

Dr Rajinder Gulati, immediate past president of IPA, said senior paediatricians of the region, including Dr Manorama Verma, Dr K.N. Dogra, Dr N. Raizada, Dr B.K. Jain, (all from Ludhiana), Dr Karnail Singh, Dr Hira Lal Khanna, (both from Amritsar), Dr K. Locham and Dr Kusum Mahajan (both from Patiala), Dr Anil Sud, Dr K.B. Sharda, Dr Sarvinder Singh, Dr Ravi Paul, (all from Jalandhar) were likely to take part in discussions.
