AIDS awareness camp

Chandigarh, September 13
As part of the on-going family health awareness campaign, the Servants of the People Society on Tuesday organised an AIDS awareness and a medical check-up camp at Khuda Alisher village.

The camp focused on people between the age group of 15-50 years. A large number of counsellors, anganwari, social and outreach workeres from local community care centre and youth club attended the camp and interacted with the people.

More than 350 persons from the village attended the camp and about 40 patients were examined by Dr Ashima and Dr Sachin.

A number of informational talks were also delivered on the occasion.

Blood camp held on Dy CM’s birthday

Panchkula, September 13
In a novel gesture, members of the Youth Congress, and the National Students Union of India (NSUI) organised a blood donation camp to celebrate the 40th birthday of the local MLA and Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Chander Mohan, at Pinjore today. As many as 70 units of blood were collected in the camp.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Chander Mohan said blood donation was the biggest service to mankind. He said the blood donated would help save the life of a needy patient, and exhorted youth to donate blood regularly. A team of doctors from the Command Hospital, Chandimandir, helped in the blood donation camp. Refreshments like fruits, milk and cold drinks were provided to all those who donated blood. TNS

Azad appointed match referee

According to a communication received from Prof R.S. Shetty, Executive Secretary, In charge, BCCI, and the Chairman, Coaching Committee, PCA, D.P. Azad has been appointed as match referee for the first two one-day matches between India and Australia under-19 teams to be played on September 19 and 21 at PCA, Mohali, here.

Mohali, September 13
The Indian team (under-19) is preparing rigorously on the nets of Punjab Cricket Association stadium for the forthcoming India-Australia series, which will commence on September 19 at the stadium. The practice sessions are being guided by Venketesh Prasad, former Indian Test player and the coach of the team.

The practice sessions start with warm up exercises followed by the training on the nets for two and half hours. Fitness exercises take place in the evening under the supervision of physiotherapist Muthu Kumar.

The Australian team is scheduled to arrive on September 16. The visitors will have two days for practice before going on the field. Both teams will don colourful dresses during the series where white balls will be used.

The two one-day matches will be held at the PCA stadium i.e. on September 19 and 21 and the next two will take place at Dharamsala. The final match will be played at Delhi on September 18.

The Indian team would play a practice match against the under-19 Punjab team, the last year’s Plate Champions on September 15. Interestingly, no player from the Punjab team has been selected for the series. Even the consistent performers like Uday Kaul and Vipin Chauhan have been overlooked by the selectors.

Kamboj to lead u-19 cricket team

Sumit Kamboj will lead Chandigarh under-19 cricket team which will participate in Haryana State Inter-District Cricket Tournament where the team will have their first encounter with Panchkula.

Other members of the team are: Yuvraj Anand, Pawan Jha, Vishal Michael, Amit Prashar, Rockey Ratta, Vipul Chadha, Amit Sonkar, Karan Kherwal, Amkit Sainai, Angad Singh, Jaspneet Singh, Neeraj, Atul Upadhayay, Gaurav Chhabra, Harsimran Singh and Mandeep.

Standby players: Vikas, Anwar, Aditya, Simranjit, Nipun Gupta, Ashwin Mehra and Minish Bhatt.

All players are required to report along with recent passport size photograph and proof of age at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, Chandigarh, on September 14 at 6.30 am.

Air Force hockey final on Sept 15

South Western Air Command (SWAC) will clash with Western Air Command (WAC) in the final of the Air Force Inter Command Hockey tournament being played here at the Sector 42 hockey stadium.

Both semi-finals played today had a nail-biting finish.In the first semi-final, SWAC downed Training Command (TC)by 4-1 scored in tie-breaker after both sides levelled at 1-1 in the stipulated time. For SWAC, first goal was scored in 8th minute while TC equalised in 25th minute. In the tie breaker, MK Singh, N.K. Singh and Thapa scored for SWAC and for TC, Dhillon was the lone scorer.

In the second semi-final, WAC had to struggle hard to beat Maintenance Command by (MC) 4-1 again scored in tie breaker. Both sides were tied at 1-1 in the stipulated time. It was Rajdeep for MC who struck the first goal in 38th minute which was equalised by the efforts of Sukhvir of WAC in 43rd minute. In the tie-breaker, Rawat, Shanker and Sequiba scored one goal each to help their team sail in to the final, which will be played on September 15.

Mehtani selected skipper of Panchkula team

Nitin Mehtani will lead the Panchkula district cricket team in the Haryana State Inter-District Cricket Tournament for the under- 19 trophy organised by the Haryana Cricket Association.

Other selected players are Varun Khanna, Prayas Panchuri, Sunny Sharma, Tejvinder Gill, Mandeep Singla, Arvind Rawat, Jitender Billa, Kapil Pandey, Nipun Gupta, Mansoor Ali, Saurabh Rana, Karan Malik, Ashutosh Walia, Aparshakti Khurana, Akash Gupta, Sachin Gehrotra and Zorawar Singh.

The players will report to Mr Jaswinder Singh, Coach, on September 14 at J.R. Institute of Cricket Technology, Naggal village, near Barwala.

Sandeep Moudgil, secretary of the Panchkula District Cricket Association said the team would play its opening match on September 15 against Chandigarh at DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh.

DAV-7 swimmers win

The swimmers of KB DAV School, Sector 7, Chandigarh, have brought laurels by winning nine medals in the CBSE North Zone I Swimming championship that oncluded last evening in Delhi.
The results are, Sparsh Arora- one gold and two bronze medals,Eshaan Bakshi- one gold and two silver medals and Karan Bhai- two silver and one bronze medal.

City to have mass transit system with Mohali, Panchkula

Chandigarh, September 13
The Chandigarh Administration today signed an agreement with RITES Limited, a Government of India company, for project development and consultancy services for the implementation of mass rapid transit system for Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.

An official press statement said in order to cater to the ever- growing needs of Chandigarh and the adjoining towns of Panchkula and Mohali, the administration has been considering the matter regarding implementation of a mass transit system over the past few years.

Mr A.K. Arora, Group General Manager of RITES, and Mr Bhupinder Singh, joint secretary Home, signed the agreement. The representatives of the governments of Punjab and Haryana were also present on the occasion.

Under the agreement, RITES will provide consultancy services for the implementation of the transit system on BOT basis. The services will include preparation of a report, choice of technology, study of traffic pattern on various routes, preparation of tender document, inviting of bids, processing of bid applications and signing of SPV.
