Onion price increase due to artificial shortage: Govt
New Delhi, September 9 “There is a small drop in the production of onions due to rains. But this time of the year, this always happens,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters here. Blaming the increase in prices to “artificial shortage” in the market created by hoarders, she said stringent action will be taken against the black marketeers. “There is no need for panic. Constant vigil is being kept on the markets,” she said. The defeat of the BJP government in Delhi in 1998 is believed to have been caused by the steep hike in onion prices. Keen not to let the situation get out of hand, Delhi Food and Civil Supplies Minister Rajkumar Chauhan held a meeting with representatives of the major wholesale markets in the capital to discuss the situation. After the meeting, he reassured there was no shortage of onions in the capital, informing that 1100 tonnes of onion had arrived in Delhi today. “There is no shortage of onions. There are adequate stocks. Using the excuse of rains in Maharashtra and Gujarat, some unscrupulous elements may be trying to hike the rates,” Chauhan said. He said inspection teams comprising officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department have been formed, who will carry out surprise checks and take action against any wholesaler or retailer either hoarding up onions or selling the vegetable at jacked-up rates. Meanwhile, to keep the situation under control, Delhi government has set up stalls at all Mother Dairy booths as well as wholesale markets in the city, where onions are being sold at the rates of Rs 8.50/kg, Rs 11.25/kg and Rs 16.50/kg. The Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), which ran Asia’s biggest fruit and vegetable market at Azadpur in North Delhi, would also set up five stalls in different parts of the city and sell onion at the same price. For this purpose, the Delhi Government would buy the commodity from Nafed. The rates of onion in the wholesale markets in the capital have been reported to have increased by three to four times — from Rs 4 to 5 per kg to Rs 15-16 per kg.. The retail price of onion in Delhi has been reported to have gone up to Rs 20-25 per kg. Though there is no shortage of onions in the city markets, the wholesale dealers are trying to push up prices on the pretext of damage to the commodity due to excess rain in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The vegetable is being sold at around Rs 15 to Rs 20 per kg. Even Mother Dairy is selling it at Rs 16.50 per kg. However, inferior quality onion is available at Rs 8.50. A major chunk of onions in the Capital came from Nasik, Maharashtra, but it also came from Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. APMC would put its stalls at Okhla, Keshav Puram, Azadpur, Gazipur and Kisan Hat in Mehrauli. Vice chairman of Azadpur Mandi’s Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Bhajan Singh said the increase in onion rates in the wholesale markets had gone up by 10 per cent. “There is no shortage of onions in Delhi, but the rates at which we are buying have also gone up due to the heavy rains in Maharashtra and Gujarat. Wholesale rates in Delhi have as a result gone up by 10 per cent,” he said. Onion stocks at the Capital’s main market Azadpur Mandi is adequate, a trader said, adding the delay in arrival of the commodity has been met by the onions pouring into the market from Rajasthan. In Capital’s retail market, onion price ranges from Rs 13-16 per kilo, whereas wholesale price for fresh arrivals in Kohlapur and Rajasthan market stand at Rs 10 per kg and Rs 8.5 per kilo respectively. Pressure on price would also get reduced in coming weeks because of festivals when onion demand would dip considerably, NAFED Additional Managing Director Jagmohan Bhanot said. |
CBI raids west Delhi traffic courts, comes across irregularities
New Delhi, September 9 “There appears to be total mismanagement of challans,” the report of the raid, conducted in the courts of Magistrates J P Agarwal, Rajan Jayant and Vinay Kumar on the direction of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, said. Cash upto Rs 14,000, large number of challan chits and original vehicle documents which should have been in the court files were seized from the possession of some Ahlmads and security guards in the courts in the searches led by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Vinod Kumar and Manoj Jain yesterday. The inspection report was today submitted to the District Judge S N Dhingra, who forwarded it to the High Court Registrar seeking action against those found guilty. The report names Ahlmads (custodian of court files) — Roshan Lal, N K Popli, Jagbir, chowkidars — Sham Singh, Mohan, Mahesh Kumar, Vasudev and drivers Hari Mohan and Pradeep, as having indulged in financial irregularities. CBI had on September 2 carried out searches in the three Traffic courts at Karkardooma and detected “substantial” financial irregularites while dealing with the traffic challan matters. The report said even at the odd hour (the raid was conducted at 7:30 PM) the courts were found open and staffers were found moving in a manner raising suspicion. It said seeing the raiding party, N K Popli, an Ahlmad and a chowkidar Sham Singh threw their purses containing money and some challans behind an almirah to evade detection. But they were recovered. The ACMMs said some documents, including one driving license, three photo copies of challans, two court notices, one slip containing five numbers of vehicles and Rs 800 was found on the top of one almirah of an Ahlmad. “It appears that as soon as search started, somebody had purposely put the money and the documents there to evade detection as none of the persons claimed them,” the report said. The CBI, after the Karkadooma raids had said it was detected that instead of challan money going to the exchequer, it was allegedly pocketed by the court officials and other people involved in the illegal act. In the cases where the challan was of Rs 2000, the court officials use to show Rs 50 as compounding amount and the rest was pocketed by them, the agency had said. Meanwhile, in its drive to curb the menace of touts in Special Courts dealing with traffic challan matters which came under the scanner of CBI recently, the Administration of the Karkardooma Court complex has directed Delhi Police to post adequate cops around the premises. “You (SHO, Anand Vihar) are directed to post sufficient staff around the courts of Special Metropolitan Magistrates to check toutisim,” Kamini Lau, Judge-in-charge-Administration Karkardooma courts said in the order. Meanwhile, Lau convened a meeting with DCP (east), ACP and SHO in her chamber and discussed the action plan to deal with the growing cases of assault against commoners and litigants inside the complex allegedly by some advocates, who work as touts. Such type of action and complaints against advocates had drawn the attention of District Judge S N Dhingra, who took serious view of the incidents and wrote letter to the Secretary of Shahadra Bar Association, asking him to take action against advocates who are indulging in ‘toutism’. CBI on September 2 had conducted massive search in the Special Magistrates’ Courts and had detected “substantial” financial irregularities and nexus between the tout and the court staffs. After the incident, all the staffs of the Special Magistartes’ Courts were transferred following a departmental action. |

New Delhi, September 9 “It was an idea that came up (in the Coordination Committee meeting). And the government is open to it,” she said. The Coordination Committee meeting had agreed that the private power companies should be asked to increase their efficiency and reduce AT&C losses so that there is no financial burden on the citizens and the government was also asked to carry out audits of the accounts of the Discoms. According to sources, the Chief Minister was pulled up for appearing for siding with the power Discoms. Meanwhile, Dikshit said if the need arises an official from the Weights and Measures Department of Delhi Government could be associated with each of the SDMs in the capital to help in the meter-checking exercise. The government has already decided to set up committees under the SDMs which would undertake meter-checking camps on a weekly basis. |

It has been indeed compared with the Jalianwala Bagh massacre,” said the Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) in a statement. The DUTA condemning the recent brutality against Dalits in Gohana has also called for immediate “action against those guilty”.
