Gang of robbers busted, 7 held

Above normal rainfall in August
Ludhiana, September 5
The total rainfall during August in Ludhiana was 197.6 mm as against 179.7mm of normal rainfall. During the first week of August 103 mm rainfall was received while a rise in temperature both minimum and maximum was recorded.

Units flay PSEB move to shut down furnaces
Ludhiana, September 5
Condemning the Punjab State Electricity Board’s decision to shut down arc and induction furnaces, industry associations here said the board should take measures to increase generation and curb wastage instead of taking drastic measures like these. 

Industry, residents resent power cuts

Unscheduled power cuts being imposed for hours daily have caused resentment among local residents and industrialists. Industry representatives alleged in addition to the compulsory cuts, the industry is suffering due to unscheduled power cuts.

Jains seek ban on slaughtering

The Jain community of the city today demanded a ban on slaughtering of animals and selling of meat products on September 8, which is a special day of religious importance for the community.

The Doraha College of Education celebrated Teachers’ Day in a novel way. The college honoured sincere and outstanding teachers of the local college. Dr Inderpal Singh, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of GND University, was the chief guest.

Teachers protest at Matka Chowk
Mandi Ahmedgarh, September 5
Hundreds of activists of the Private Aided Teachers Union marched towards Chandigarh for participating in the state-level demonstration at Matka Chowk today. They had proceeded on mass casual leave as a part of observation of black day on the occasions of the Teachers’ Day.

Row over shifting of ESI dispensary
Ludhiana, September 5
Thousands of workers, entitled to medical facilities under the Employees State Insurance Scheme (ESI) in the city, are upset over the government decision to shift the ESI dispensary No 4 from the premises of ESI Model Hospital here to Jodhan village, about 12 km from here.
