Eye donation awareness camp held

Chandigarh, September 3
An eye donation awareness camp was organised by the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Midtown in collaboration with the State Blindness Control Society at Government High School, Sector 10, here today.

Dr Jawahar Luthra educated students about eye donation and answered their questions. Dr Inderjit Kaur Walia, Director, Health Services, Chandigarh Administration, motivated the students to spread the message of eye donation. She sought help of the students in reporting cases of female foeticide. She also wanted the students to motivate their families to participate in the national health programme.

Mr R.K. Goyal, president of the Rotary Club, Chandigarh Midtown, talked about various programmes and projects of the club.

A poster competition was also organised in which Nitin, Amit and Arvind got first, second and third prize, respectively, while Jaswinder and Lalit were given consolation prizes.

Council supports homoeopathy

Chandigarh, September 3
Dr Paramjeet Singh Ranu, Chairman of the Council of Homoeopathic System of Medicine, Punjab and Chandigarh, said the council had decided to file a suit for damages against a researcher Mr Matthias Egger for speaking against the homoeopathic system of medicine.

He said Dr Peter Fisher, Director of Royal London Hospital, and Dr Abumani Ramadoss, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, had condemned the stand taken by Matthias Egger.

“The study carried out by Egger on 110 patients by using homoeopathy and conventional remedies in matching conditions might have been done by adopting their own yardsticks”, added Dr Ranu. — TNS

CFA’s winning spree continues

Star-studded Chandigarh Football Academy-42 continued its winning spree and hammered Gurdaspur Football Club by 4-0. Gagan of CFA opened the account in the ninth minute of the play receiving a pass from Jaspal. It was again Jaspal who sent through pass towards Rakesh who made no mistake in scoring the second goal in the 13th minute. Gurdaspur lads came up with couple of good moves but lack of planning ruined their hopes.

In the 27th minute, Jaspal Singh of the CFA converted the penalty corner. With this, CFA lads were leading by 3-0 at the breather. On the resumption of the play, the fourth goal was scored by Rakesh in the 41st minute of the play.

At the Sector 17 football ground, SAI, Kolkata, edged past Coaching Centre, Ambala, by 1-0. The solitary goal for the SAI was netted by Surjit Sarkar in the 65th minute of the play.

In another match, spirited Goa Football Association stunned MFA, Kurali, by 2-1. The first goal was scored by Goan Arnold Cartoz in the 20th minute. The equaliser was netted by Mohan Chander in the 27th minute. The Goa team registered its win by converting the penalty kick by Aiken Dass.

In the last match of the day, which was played between YFC, Rurka Kalan, and St Stephen’s Academy, Chandigarh, the match ended in a draw at 1-1. It was Harjeet of YFC, Rurkan Kalan, who drew first blood in the 18th minute of the play. The equaliser was scored by Ganeshwar in the 56th minute.

Tamil Nadu, UP boys to clash for carrom title

Defending champion, Tamil Nadu and third position holder Uttar Pradesh entered into boys team championship final after beating Bihar by 3-0 and Hyderabad by 2-1, respectively, in the semifinals in 33rd Sub-Junior National and Inter-State Carrom Championship at Skating Rink Hall, Sector 10, here today.

In girls’ team championship, defending champion Uttar Pradesh and Bihar entered into final after defeating host team Chandigarh 3-0 and Tamil Nadu 2-1, respectively.

The six-day event is being organised by the Chandigarh Carrom Association.

The results are: boys semifinal: Ist singles G.D. Ashok Kumar (Tamil Nadu) b Junaid (Bihar) 25-8 (completed in 9 boards) and 25-8 (in 6 boards); 2 nd Singles D.Dilli Babu (TN) b Rahul (Bihar) 25-10 (in 9 boards) and 25-0 (in 3 boards); boys doubles — K.Suresh and Chandra Kumar b Nandan and Dharmendra (Bihar) 25-18 (in 10 boards) 2nd game 25-1 (in 6 boards).

Anmol, Mohit lead in chess meet

Anmol Razdan, Mohit Arora and Rishu Rathi took the lead with three points each in the under-17 category of Chandigarh Chess Championship which began at St. Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 4, here today. In u-11 category, Shivam, Ashna, Shrishty and Tashmeen Kaur were leading with three points each.

As many as 67 players of various schools are taking part in the championship.

Sparkling knock by Saurav

A sparkling knock of 46 by Saurav Chopra enabled Sector 16 stadium to have an edge over St John’s Cricket Academy in the semifinal of the 3rd SN Vohra Cricket Tournament being played at St John’s grounds at Sector 26, here today.

Sector 16 team won the toss and elected to field. St John could muster only 104 runs in stipulated 27 overs at the loss of nine wickets. Only Manan made 53 but despite his contribution, the team failed to make an impact on Stadium-16 team who chased the score in 25 overs at the loss of six wickets.

Brief scores: St John’s: 104 for 9 in 27 overs (Manan 53, Vishu 2 for 24 and Saurav Chopra 2 for 10); and Stadium-16: 108 in 25 overs for 6 wickets (Saurav Chopra 46, Shubham 18 and Sureshtra 17).

In the second match played between St Anne’s School and DAV School Academy, Sector 8, DAV won by 20 runs.

Brief scores: DAV: 121 for 9 in 27 overs (Rahul 27, Krishna 21 and Sharya 4 for 20); St Anne’s: 101 all out in 26 overs (Visheshpal 19, Charanpreet 20, Shivdeep 31, Rahul Chopra 3 for 17 and Vikram 3 for 13).

GPEC, Polo XI enter last four

Patiala, September 3
Government Physical Education College (GPEC), Patiala, and Polo XI entered the semifinals of the Patiala District Women’s Hockey Championship played at the GPEC ground here today.

Right half Rajni played the star turn for GPEC in their 1-0 win against Model High School, Nabha, as she gave a polished performance throughout the match. The GPEC opened their account in the seventh minute when right out Reena gave a diagonal pass to Rajni who side stepped two defenders before sending in a neat grounder. The Nabha girls, led by their strikers Jatinder Kaur and Shilpy, managed to put a lot of pressure on the GPEC defence but failed to succeed.

Polo XI too reached the semifinal stage by virtue of their one-sided 8-0 victory against Rajpura XI. For the winners, centre half Bharti played a stellar role by scoring three goals while right in Gurinder and right out Vijeta scored two goals apiece as Polo XI ran away with the match. In the last match of the day, K.K. International played a steady game but poor finishing let them down in the end as they went down 0-2 to Patel Public School, Rajpura.

SD College pugilists win title

It was again overall dominance of SD College, Sector 32, with 27 points on the concluding day of 29 th Chandigarh Senior State Boxing Championship held at Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today. DAV College, Sector 10, bagged the second position with 20 points and Sharda Sarvhitkari, Sector 40, was placed at third position with 17 points.

The other winners in their respective categories were: Paramjit, Aman, Jatinder, Sanjay, Balwinder, Sandeep, Ajay, Vishaal, Nawab and Pradeep.

Girls’ soccer semifinals today

Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 46, and St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, moved into semifinals from Group B in the Chandigarh Sub-Junior Girls (under-17) Football Tournament for the Shivalik Trophy held at the Shivalik Public School ground in Sector 41, here today.

Government Model-46 prevailed over St Xavier’s-45 by 2-0 in the tie-breaker session while St Stephen’s- 45 advanced to last four grades.

Tomorrow’s fixtures (semis): Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School-20 vs Shivalik Public School-41 (9 am); and Government Model SSS-46 vs St Stephen’s-45 (10 am).
