Allow vertical nurses’ institutes: Fortis chief
Chandigarh, September 1 Making this observation, Mr Harpal Singh, Chairman, Fortis Healthcare Ltd, told The Tribune that at present India has a shortage of over 7.5 lakh trained nurses and this figure is expected to rise to around 14 lakh by 2010. “In the USA alone, there is a shortage of 0.4 million nurses. India, too, will fall into the same trap if we do not step up facilities of teaching and training of nurses,” he said. However, Mr Harpal Singh, whose company also manages a nursing institute at Mohali, asserted that the opportunity would be lost if the union as well as the State governments, do not make the necessary changes in the guidelines for the establishment of nursing institutes. “How can the government still order that each nursing institute be situated on at least two acres of land? This is the age of vertical development. Where is the land in the cities and townships? I believe that if a nursing institute has the required infrastructure and is able to take good care of the students, the two-acre stipulation should be done away with,” he said. He also disclosed that he has already conveyed his suggestion to the Punjab Government, adding that in case, the guidelines are not revised, most of the institutes would be forced to shut shop. “The rule regarding two acres was framed decades ago, when land prices were a pittance as compared to today. At today’s land rates, it is not just possible for a nursing college to be financially viable if it has to invest in two acres of land,” he added. Mr Harpal Singh also favoured the introduction of self-certification for the institutes to ensure better infrastructure. “If the institute is certifying itself, it will be aware of the consequences of making false claims,” he added. He also favoured stricter norms to check fly-by-night operators from running nursing institutes. He disclosed that Fortis was toying with the idea of making its nursing courses free of cost for good students. “We are exploring the possibility of helping the good students get loans from banks and underwriting the loans. All that we expect the student to do is that he/she works with us for three to five years after completing the course. We hope to attract more good students by doing so,” he added. |

Mr Kesho Ram, who himself has been donating blood for the past 25 years, further added that every human being must donate blood to save lives. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Kanta Sarup Krishen, honorary general secretary, Blood Bank Society, said: “The trust organises blood donation camp every year in memory of Shruti, the late daughter of Mr Yogesh Sood who died in an accident many years ago, and Dr Ambrish Sood. |

5-yr term of panchayat bodies’ chief to stay
Chandigarh, September 1 The decision would be made public after receiving the nod of the UT Administrator, sources in the administration said. The decision would clear the issue of reservation for the post of Chairman of the Zila Parishad. The functioning of the newly elected Zila Parishad had been affected due to delay on part of the Chandigarh Administration in deciding on the issue. The sources said earlier various options like rotating the post on the pattern of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation had not been approved. It would have meant that if the first term was reserved for women, the next term had to go to the general category and the third to Scheduled Caste candidate. The issue had been referred to the Legal Remembrance (LR) for legal opinion. While going through the files of the case, the officials found that no notification regarding the schedule of the status of the post of the Chairman of the two Panchayati Raj institutions had been issued in the past. Now the notification would have to be issued for the
Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad, which will define the status of the five-year term of the Chairman in the future. The files have to be cleared before the decision was announced within the next 10 days, said a senior officer in the administration. |
