Patiala
Takes over: Mr Mohan Ram Banga took charge as the Director, Language Department, Punjab, here on Thursday. He joined the department in 1976 as a Language Editor and served on various posts.

Lecture: Inmates of Patiala Central Jail were given lecture by state awardee Master Jagdish Chander Kumar of the Gayatri Parivar, Patiala, on various diseases and their control here on Thursday. About 150 saplings of medicinal and other trees were also planted.

Celebrated: Indane distributors of Patiala and Sangrur districts celebrated the 42nd Indian Oil Day here on Thursday. Company Sales Manager Vikas Gupta and all distributors of the two districts were present on the occasion.

Tree plantation: A tree-plantation drive was held at Government High School, Daon Kalan, by the Punjab Eco-Friendly Association here on Thursday. As many as 200 saplings were planted. Mr K.K. Sharma was the chief guest.

Seminar: The department of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Studies, Punjabi University, organised a seminar on the Parkash Divas of Sri Guru Granth Sahib on the university campus here on Thursday. Dr Suba Singh, Principal, Gurmat College, Patiala, delivered a lecture on the importance, principles and teachings of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

Demonstration on social issues
: The district unit of the All-India Democratic Women’s Association organised a demonstration on social issues here on Wednesday. Ms Shakuntla Jakhar, state secretary of the AIDWA, led the demonstration. The members gave a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding the redressal of the problems of the weaker section of the society.

NHRC notice to police: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Director General of Police and Inspector General of Police (Jails), Haryana, to furnish reports on the complaint lodged by an undertrial, Gurdip Singh. The complainant, who is facing trial in the case of abduction of the four-year-old daughter of a former SP, had alleged that the police was likely to liquidate him in a fake encounter.

PANIPAT
Man found murdered: Ami Lal of Rar Kalan village was found murdered near Moonak canal here on Wednesday. It is suspected that some thieves killed him to steal his goats as the body bore several injury marks.

REWARI
Constables injured: Constables Pramod Kumar and Gyani Ram sustained injuries when their motor cycle was knocked down by a stolen truck (HR-55-B-7441) which they tried to intercept on the Rewari- Bharawas road near New Grain Market here on Wednesday night. Constable Pramod Kumar has been admitted to a private hospital at Gurgaon where his condition is stated to be serious. The Model Town police has registered a case of assault, attempt to murder and rash driving under Sections 353, 186, 332, 412, 427, 307 and 279 of the IPC against the absconding truck occupants.

Killed in accident: Narender, a resident of Alika village under Palwal Sadar police station, died on the spot while driver Dheeraj sustained injuries when their Maruti car (DL-3CF-7890) dashed against a tree on the Rewari-Kanina road, near Siha village, about 20 km from here, on Wednesday, The Khol police has registered a case of rash and negligent driving against Dheeraj.
