Father of seven brings home abandoned infant

Poverty did not deter this man from embracing a few-hour-old girl, who was all set to be devoured by stray dogs. The girl child was abandoned by her biological parents and left on Basti Jodhewal Road here last midnight.

Two quacks booked in Sudhar
Ludhiana, August 30
The health department got a major success in its ongoing drive against quacks thriving in when two quacks were booked under the relevant provisions of the Medical Council of India Act, Drugs and Cosmetics Act, in addition to the Section 420 of the IPC at Gurusar Sudhar on Monday.

Netaji’s guard suffers stroke
Mullanpur Dakha, August 30
Mr Mehar Singh, a guard of INA chief, Netaji Subhash Chander Bose, is lying in a hospital. He is bitter for the district administration and political leaders, haven’t to inquired about his health. Mehar Singh (84) who was held captive in a Singapore jail before freedom, suffered a stroke at Mandiani village yesterday. He was shifted to Pandori Nursing Home at Mullanpur Dakha.
Angry at the ‘attitude’ of the political leaders and civil servants, Mr Mehar Singh, while talking to TNS from his hospital bed said that he had suffered the ire of the British for his countrymen, who did not care to pay a visit to him.

DSP’s car wounded 2 basketball players
Ludhiana, August 30
The police investigation into a two-week-old hit and run case in which the driver of a Mahindra Jeep had crushed and wounded two state-level female basketball players near Krishna Mandir has found that the jeep belonged to the family of a serving Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Rajasthan.

Mann to be released today

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) chief and former MP Simranjit Singh Mann will be released from Central Jail here tomorrow after remaining in judicial custody for two-and-half months in a case of sedition.

Admin, police gear up for Beant function

Elaborate arrangements have been made for the state level function to be held to observe the tenth death anniversary of Beant Singh, a former Chief Minister of Punjab. The function will be held at Payal tomorrow.

While the administration has geared up to observe the martyrdom day of late Chief Minister Beant Singh, Congressmen of the area apprehend that the factionalism in the party would mar the function as they allege that it has become a “Kotli family function” instead of being a state affair.

PCMSA decries Finance Dept orders

The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) has expressed its resentment against the recent orders of the Punjab Finance Department, denying DA merger pay fixation formula. Seeking immediate intervention of the Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, the association has demanded an end to this discrimination otherwise it might resort to an agitation.

Railways to adopt GSM system

The Indian Railways is migrating its rail communication to GSM-Railway for which it has awarded additional contracts to the Siemens Communications group. This was stated in a press note today.

Two arrested, heroin seized
Ludhiana, August 30
The police seized 900 grams of heroin worth Rs 90 lakh and arrested two persons here today besides arresting two others with 200 grams of smack worth Rs 20,000.

Following a spate of labour unrest incidents in recent past and changing industrial scenario, trade unions here are laying a special emphasis on generating awareness among migrant labourers. Unions feel their responsibility has increased and there is a need to make workers increasingly aware of their rights and also of their duties.

Amloh girl remains topper in PMET revised result
Amloh, August 30
Karanjot Kaur, a resident of this town, not only maintained her first rank in the state but also improved her secure and got 672 marks out of 772 (87.05 per cent) in the revised pre-medical entrance test (PMET-2005) declared yesterday by Guru Nanak Dev University. Her parents are in medical profession.

Shifting of ESIC dispensaries resented

The workers and managements of industrial units here have resented the government’s move to shift ESIC dispensaries to Jitwal. Terming the decision to be arbitrary and in violation of the instructions of the Industries Department, they have urged the authorities to withdraw the decision.

City shuttlers for sub-junior meet
