Girl hostels cramped
Swarleen Kaur

Chandigarh, August 25
Suman, a student of MA (IInd year) at Panjab University and an inmate of Kasturba hostel, is happy to be in the department lecture rooms. But when her classes are over she is not willing to enter her hostel room. The reason is not hard to discover. Her small room is barely sufficient for her peaceful existence. Moreover, it is shared by another girl, which leaves no room for privacy.

Two or three girls are now sharing rooms meant to accommodate one student in the girls’ hostels on Panjab University campus.

This means that the girls have to share toilet, furniture and many other things. But ironically the rent of the room is not shared. When it comes to paying the charges, then they have to pay per head, which comes to nearly Rs 400 a month.

Most of the inmates feel suffocated and complain of congestion in the room. This sometimes also leads to small tussles. As many as 65 per cent of university students are girls and nearly 2,000 girls have been accommodated in six hostels on the campus.

Ankita Thakur, former vice-president of the Panjab University Students Union and an inmate of Sarojani Bai hostel, said, “Though the charges are very nominal but we are not getting much facilities. We just go to the room only to sleep. Moreover, we have to pay for the food over and above this and the mess food too is not good.

The Dean, Students Welfare (women), Ms Meenakshi Malhotra, said, “As a lot of students come from outside, hostels seats always are full. We don’t have any other alternative. If they are sharing the room, then it is for the benefit of students. Now one more hostel is under construction. The charges of the hostels are very nominal which students can afford easily. I think it is better to share the room than to stay outside as a paying guest”.

Our High Court Correspondent

Chandigarh, August 25
The Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the Union Government to inform the court why a Presiding Officer is not being appointed for the Debts Recovery Tribunal, Chandigarh.

This question was put during hearing of a petition filed by Arvinder Pal Singh of Guru Ankush Overseas Limited, Amritsar, seeking directions to the respondents, including Canara Bank, not to auction the company’s commercial property located at Amritsar under the Securitisation Act.

Advocate Rohit Suri, counsel for the petitioner, informed the Division Bench of Chief Justice Mr Justice D.K. Jain and Mr Justice Hemant Gupta that the auction process was illegal and arbitrary.

He also informed the Bench that the company’s petition was still pending in DRT, Chandigarh without even a notice being issued. He said this was due to the fact that there was no regular Presiding Officer to hear cases before DRT.

He also stated that the company had deposited the court fee of Rs 52,000 in DRT but had got no hearing.

After hearing counsel, the Bench issued notice of motion to the respondents for October 7. It also stayed the auction process.
