2 city ophthalmologists awarded gold medals

Ludhiana, August 24
Two leading ophthalmologists from the city — Dr G.S. Dhami and Dr Deepak K. Gupta — were honoured and awarded gold medals at ‘Vision Perfect 2005’, the National Annual Conference of the Intraocular Implant and Refractive Society of India (IIRSI), organised by the National Institute of Ophthalmology, Pune Ophthalmological Society and Maharashtra Ophthalmological Society on August 20 and 21, in Pune.

The medals were awarded by the Dean of Medical Faculty, Pune University, Dr G.R. Ekbote in the presence of more than 300 delegates.

Leading eye surgeons from all over the country, including Dr Kamaljeet Singh from Allahabad, president (2006-2007), Dr Amar Agarwal from Chennai, secretary, Dr Mahipal Singh Sachdev from New Delhi, chairman, scientific committee, Dr Keiki Mehta from Mumbai, scientific international coordinator of the IIRSI, Dr S.B. Kelkar, chairman, National Institute of Ophthalmology, Pune, and Dr Parkash Kankaria, from Ahmednagar, president, Maharashtra Ophthalmological Society attended the conference.

The city eye surgeons delivered talks as part of their ‘gold medal oration’. Dr G.S. Dhami spoke on ‘phaco in difficult situations’ while Dr Deepak K. Gupta delivered a lecture on ‘Nit Phaco: A technique for Hard Cataracts’.

According to Dr Gupta, each year the IIRSI awards gold medals to eye surgeons and ophthalmologists for outstanding work.

This year, a total of six gold medals were awarded by the IIRSI at the national conference. The other four awardees of gold medals were Dr Yogesh Shah, (Mumbai), Dr Subodh Aggarwal, (Lucknow), Dr Mahesh Punjabi, (Kota) and Dr Rajiv Chaudhary, (Indore).

Gujjarwal girls win hockey title

Gujjarwal zone beat Gill zone to emerge champions in hockey (u-14) in the girls’ section of the Ludhiana Schools Inter-Zonal Tournament being played at different venues here today. Sahnewal zone secured third position. In table tennis (u-14), Khanna and PAU zones earned first and second positions, respectively, while Gill zone finished at third spot.

Other results: table tennis (u-17)- PAU zone 1, Khanna zone 2 and Gill zone 3; (u-14)- Khanna zone 1, PAU zone 2 and Gill zone 3; badminton (u-19) PAU zone 1, Gill zone 2 and Raikot zone 3; (u-17) PAU zone 1, Khanna zone 2 and Sahnewal zone 3; (u-14) Gill zone 1, PAU zone 2 and Jagraon zone 3; basketball (u-17) Raikot zone beat Sahnewal zone 23-22; Gill zone defeated Raikot zone 18-12; PAU zone beat Sahnewal zone.

In kabaddi (u-17), Gill zone beat Sahnewal; Jagraon zone beat Khanna zone; Raikot zone beat Samrala; Jagraon zone beat Sahnewal; (u-19)- Raikot zone beat Samrala zone; Gujjarwal zone beat Khanna zone; Sahnewal zone beat Gill zone; Jagraon zone beat PAU zone and Raikot zone beat Khanna zone to advance to next round.

Khanna block players shine

Players of Khanna block stole limelight on the opening day of the two-day Ludhiana District Inter-Block Rural Sports Tournament which being held at Guru Nanak Stadium here today. Mr J. D. Kaura, a leading industrialist of the town and a sports promoter, inaugurated the tournament in which more than 700 sportspersons are taking part.

First day’s results: Boys 400 m — Lakhbir Singh of Khanna block 1, Sukhcharan Singh of Samrala block 2 and Sandeep Singh of Machhiwara block 3; high jump — Sewak Singh of Khanna block 1, Abhishek Sharma of Khanna block 2 and Harwinder Singh of Samrala block 3; 1500 m — Jatinder Kumar of Khanna block 1, Ravidner Singh of Samrala block 1, Sandeep Singh of Sidhwan block 2.

Discus throw- Amandeep Singh of Khanna block 1, Jagmanjot Singh of Khanna block 2 and Prabhjot Singh of Sahnewal block 3; shot put- Amandeep Singh of Khanna block 1, Prabhjot Singh of Sahnewal block 2 and Jagmanjot Singh of Khanna block 3; kabaddi- Pakhowal block 1, Samrala block 2 and Dehlon block 3.

Cricket tourney

Ludhiana, August 24
The Shivam Cricket Academy will organise the first Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Cricket Tournament at Dana Mandi Ground, Bahadurke Road, from August 28. Sixteen top teams of the region will take part in this tournament.

According to Mr Bhuvnesh Punni, chief organiser of the tournament committee, the matches will be played on Sundays. The winners will pocket a cash prize of Rs 6,100 while the runners up will receive a cash prize of Rs 4,100.

Mr Madan Lal Bagga, councillor, Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana, will inaugurate the tournament on August 28 which will last till October 23.

MC revokes sewerage tariff

Mandi Gobindgarh, August 24
The Municipal Council, Mandi Gobindgarh, has taken a lead in revoking the water and sewerage tariff, totalling Rs 50.5 lakh, levied on the residents of the town.

At decisions taken unanimously at a meeting.

As many as 8725 families will be freed from water supply charges and 7082 from paying sewerage charges. The council resolved to instal a solid waste plant at a cost of Rs 3.65 crore. Half of the total expenditure on this project will be shared by the Punjab Pollution Control Board.

A separate Transport Nagar would soon be completed at a cost of Rs 3, 20 crore which would be inaugurated by Capt Amarinder Singh, Chief Minister, in September. A modern park costing Rs 1.50 crore would also be inaugurated then.

IT survey at city hospital

Ludhiana, August 24
The Income Tax Department today launched a survey operation at a local hospital in Model Town locality purportedly with the objective of unearthing concealed income.

According to information made available by official sources, a team of over two dozen officials, headed by Joint Commissioner Sandeep Dahiya, descended on the hospital premises and conducted thorough examination of financial transactions, books of account and record pertaining to billing and admissions.
