Dr Amrik Sohi heads PAUTA team

Ludhiana, August 24
Dr Amrik Singh Sohi was today elected president of the Punjab Agricultural University Teachers’ Association (PAUTA), even as the Opposition boycotted the poll.

Addressing the members later in the day, an elated Dr Sohi said their association would not allow the division of the university by accepting Guru Angad Dev Veterinary University as a separate entity. This was not in the interests of the university and its employees.

Dr Sohi said PAUTA had made all efforts for providing the necessary facilities to the teachers. Not only for the teachers of the PAU campus, PAUTA would also make efforts to provide facilities to the teachers working at the Regional Research Stations, Krishi Vigyan Kendras and farm advisory service stations.

Earlier, the Returning Officer, Dr Gurdev Singh Deol, declared the list of the winning candidates. The are : Dr Harmit Singh Kingra (vice-president), Dr Inder Mohan Chhibba (Secretary) and Dr Amrit Saini (Joint Secretary), Mr Mukesh Syag (Finance Secretary), Dr Jeet Singh Sandhu, Dr Jaswinder Kaur Brar, Dr Jatinder Singh Brar, Dr Harpal Singh Randhawa, Dr Chander Mohan, Dr Parampal Singh Gill, Dr G P S Sodhi, Dr Inderjit Singh Grewal, Dr Gur Navinder Singh Sidhu and Dr Baljit Singh (all executive members). The newly elected team will work for two years.

Thanking the PAU teachers, Dr Hari Singh Brar, former PAUTA president, said he was retiring next year and had entrusted this responsibility with Dr Sohi. He hoped that the faculty would lend support to the newly elected president so that pending demands of the association could be realised.

New college student council installed

The new Student Council of Government College for Women for the year 2005-2006 was installed here yesterday by the college Principal, Ms Prabhjot Kaur, and the Vice-Principal Ms Narinder Sekhon.

The students were given badges on the occasion. The students took the pledge to uphold the name and principles of the college. The students elected for various posts were: head girl — Shivya Sahnan, deputy head girl — Romil Grewal, secretary —Manasvinee; joint secretary — Neha Verma, along with editors, toppers and presidents of various societies .

BNSM students shine

Students of BNSM College of Technical Education, Alamgir, have scored well in BCA 2nd and 4th semester exams. According to the university results, Beant Kaur has stood Ist in BCA 2nd semester, Amandeep Kaur has stood Ist in the class by securing 78 per cent marks and Rupinderjit Kaur and Harjeet Kaur were declared 2nd and 3rd, respectively, in the BCA 4th semester examinations. All the students were congratulated by the staff members for bringing excellent results for the college.

Teej celebrated

The festival of Teej was celebrated in the college premises here today. The college bore a festive look with colourful decorations and ethnic festivities. The culture of Punjab came alive through the ambience of the place. Around 20 stalls were set up by the students, who also presented a very entertaining function. The students and the audience started dancing on their feet on foot-tapping numbers. Priya Sharma praised the students for their enthusiasm and zeal in which they presented the function.

Rupali was chosen Ms Teej Queen, Daizy was first runner-up while Lipsy was second runner up. In Mehndi competition, Rachna was declared first while Ranjeeta came second and Shelly was adjudged third.

Declamation contest in Guru Nanak Public School

A declamation competition for Class VIII was held in Guru Nanak Public School here today. The results are as follows: Jalnidh Kaur — VIII-G (1); Anantvir Singh — VIII- G (2); Simran — VIII - G (3); and consolation prize Karanpal Singh — VIII - C.

Kundan Vidya Mandir’s Junior Humanities Forum organised an inter- house quiz contest here today at the school auditorium.

Ms Kalpana Sharma, in charge of the forum, conducted the quiz.

Each team had students from Classes VI, VII and VIII. Mr Sanjeev Sharma and Mr Swapan Kumar made the contest more lively with music.

Running trophies were awarded to the best class teachers Ms Alka Chhabra, Ms Kiran Verma and Ms Reena Kapoor. Most disciplined girls and boys, and winners of inter - class kho - kho matches were given prizes.

Tagore House bagged first and second positions and Gandhi and Subhas Houses came third in the quiz contest.

City girl wins Disney Channel’s contest

A city girl, Sumit Shina, has won the Disney Channel’s Kim Possible Tod contest. She along with Sunny Gurpreet from Ludhiana are amongst the 25 proud winners in this contest.

Mr K. Seshasaye, head of the public relations, Walt Disney Television International, India, at a function held in the NM Jain School handed over the prize to NM Jain School’s Principal to present the gaming phone to Ms Sumit Shina.

The winners were chosen from over 2.16 lakh entries. The contest ran from July 25 to August 12. The channel invited its young viewers to help the show’s chief protagonist, Kim save the world from destruction by intercepting secret codes with special codes. With over 22 lakh spy goggles available to aspiring young secret agents across India, it was one of the biggest ever marketing campaign for kids in terms of consumer contact.

PCO owner gets life term

Ludhiana, August 24
The Court of Additional Sessions Judge, Mr S.P.Bangarh, has sentenced a PCO owner, Avtar Singh, alias Fauji (31), of Nandpur village to life imprisonment on the charge of murdering Amandeep Singh, alias Babu, at Harnam Nagar, Ludhiana. A fine of Rs 5000 was imposed on the accused.

Pronouncing the verdict, Mr Bangarh held that the plea of the accused that he had fired a shot in exercise of defence did not stand, keeping in the view the evidence produced on record by the prosecution.

The accused was booked under Section 302, IPC, at the Sadar police station on November 17,1997, following the complaint of Rajbir Singh. It was stated by the complainant that on November 8, 1997, he along with his family members had gone to Paddi village for the marriage party of one Ravinder Singh.

During the bhangra, there was an exchange of hot words between the accused, Bittu, alias Manjit Singh, and him. Bittu was his friend so the matter was sorted out. On November 17, 1997, he along with Amandeep (since deceased) and some other persons went to the PCO of all accused to express resentment, but left the place in a Maruti car.

The complainant claimed that they chased the accused and fired a shot from a double-barrelled gun, which hit Amandeep. He died at the spot.
