Cong councillors may move
no-trust motion
Jammu, August 3 The Congress is likely to move a no-confidence motion against the BJP Mayor, Mr Kavinder Gupta and instal its own man on the chair. The Congress had earlier lost the Mayor’s post with a thin margin of two votes as the councillors failed to reach a consensus on the candidature of Mr Bansi Lal. Because of cross, voting, the BJP managed to instal the first Mayor of the JMC. However the situation has changed now and the two factions within the Congress appear to have joined hands to oust Mr. Kavinder Gupta. In a show of strength, the Congress managed to muster support of 37 councillors to stage a walkout of a recent meeting of the JMC that was presided by Mr Gupta. The Congress has strength of 27 in the 71 member house and is supported by two councillors of the PDP. However, a couple of Independents have now reportedly joined hands with the Congress to overthrow the BJP Mayor. Most of the Independents had supported the BJP candidate in the earlier election as the Congress was divided on the issue of supporting their nominee for the post of Mayor. The no-confidence motion against the Mayor can be moved only when the incumbent completes six months in office. However, the BJP was pinning its hopes on the discontent among the independents that have been denied plum posts in the JMC. The number game was so far in favour of the BJP that has strength of 25 and was being supported by six councillors of the National Conference. The independents will play a crucial role in deciding the future of the JMC. |
Vaishno Devi account with J&K Bank not closed
Jammu, August 3 A senior functionary of the board said here today that “50 per cent of the Rs 100 crore deposited with the JK Bank has been withdrawn for investing Government securities (RBI bonds). “He said Rs 50 crore were still in the JK bank. He explained that the reason for investing in RBI bonds was that “board will get eight per cent interest whereas the JK bank would not give more than five per cent.” When the JK Bank authorities came to know that the Shrine Board had withdrawn Rs 50 crore an impression went round the state that the withdrawal was the result of
ongoing differences between Governor, S.K. Sinha, who heads the Shrine Board, and Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. It was construed that the Governor wanted to retaliate by withdrawing a big chunk of money from the JK Bank of which the state government is a major share holder. Since 1986, when the Shrine Board was set up, its money used to be deposited only in the JK Bank. Even Raj Bhavan sources said today “the Governor and the members of the Shrine Board have not taken any decision relating to the withdrawal of the entire Shrine Board money from the JK Bank.” The sources said that the Board would always watch the interests of the holy place and “whichever bank offered us bigger interest we will have no difficulty in being the customers of that bank.” Those who had started giving a political twist to the transfer of money from Bank had also attributed the board decision to the recent transfer of Ms Sonali Kumar, principal secretary to the Government, who happens to be wife of Dr Arun Kumar, Principal Secretary to the Governor. Ms Sonali Kumar has gone on a two months protest leave after she conveyed her displeasure over the way she faced seventh transfer within less than three years. The Government, according to official sources, had resented the decision of Ms Sonali Kumar who as Principal Secretary Forests had transferred several hundred acres of forest land to Amarnath Shrine Board, which is also headed by the Governor, for developing facilities for the pilgrims between Pahalgam and the holy mountain cave. Ms Kumar had argued that she had issued the order after the approval of the minister concerned. The matter had been challenged in the High Court and the court had directed the shrine board that whatever land it wanted to use for developing
facilities for the pilgrims should not face any denudation of forest cover and efforts be made to preserve environmental balance. The shrine board sources said that it was wrong to attribute motives to the withdrawal of money from the JK Bank. They said any public trust, especially a shrine Board will ensure that there was no monetary loss to the money donated by pilgrims. |
