Teachers’ judicial remand extended 
Ludhiana, July 22
As many as 150 unemployed elementary teachers who had been arrested were brought from the Central Jail, Ludhiana, today for being produced in the local courts in two buses. Their union wore black badges over their mouth in their support.

Servant masterminds Rs 50 lakh robbery
Case solved with arrest of three
Ludhiana, July 22
Cash and jewellery worth approximately Rs 50 lakh were stolen from a palatial house of a local well known steel rolling mill owner in Gurdev Nagar here last midnight. The alleged burglars decamped with a cash worth Rs 22 lakh and gold ornaments worth Rs 28 lakh.

Car bazar operators resist MC move on parking sites

The protest lodged by car bazar owners against putting up of barricades in Feroze Gandhi Market here yesterday for restricting the entry of heavy vehicles and to regulate parking facilities, notwithstanding, the district authorities and the civic administration have made it clear that the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court will be followed in this regard.

Cong mahila unit chief arrested

The police has arrested Manpreet Kaur Dhaliwal, president of the District Mahila Congress (Rural), for allegedly trying to bribe Mr Gurinder Singh Bal, city SHO, Jagraon, to seek his help in a murder case of her daughter.

An employee of the local municipal corporation, Sita (18), was seriously injured when an iron slab being used for shuttering of an elevated road under construction, hit her on her head after tearing the roof of the autorickshaw in which she was travelling near the railway station here.

Two killed as driver loses control of truck
Khanna, July 22
Two persons were killed and five persons including two women, were injured when the driver of a truck lost control at traffic lights near Lalheri road, Khanna, on Thursday afternoon. All five injured were admitted at Civil Hospital, Khanna. The police has arrested the driver.

Benipal is Land Mortgage Bank chief
Machhiwara, July 22
Mr Rupinder Singh Benipal, general secretary, Youth Akali Dal, was unanimously elected chairman of Land Mortgage Bank, Machhiwara at a meeting of board of directors held under the presidentship of senior director Avtar Singh Mithewal whereas Mr Mukand Singh was elected vice-chairman unopposed.

The Niharika Ladies Club organised a healthy baby contest here. A large number of club members joined to celebrate the beginning of rainy season. Ms Ranjit Bajaj, president of the club, welcomed the advisory board members and members of the club.

Anti-dumping duty on steel suspended
Ludhiana, July 22
The Union Government has scrapped anti-dumping duty on some alloy and on alloy steel items. Stating this Mr P.D. Sharma, president of the Apex Chamber of Commerce and Industry Punjab, said here today that anti-dumping duty at the rate of $ 14.9 per tonne was imposed on products from oscol electrometallurgical combinate of Russia while all other products from that country were required to pay anti-dumping duty at the rate of $ 90 per tonne.

BSNL’s new tariff plans
Ludhiana, July 22
The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has reintroduced attractive tariff plans with more free calls on popular demand of the subscribers. According to Mr G.S. Julka, General Manager, Telecom Ludhiana, the BSNL had received huge support from different categories of subscribers for these tariff plans, which were suspended for some time

Scientists caution farmers
Ludhiana, July 22
PAU experts have advised farmers to check the level of carbon dioxide in the tube wells while repairing the pumps. According to scientists from the Department of Soil and Water Engineering carbon dioxide gas is produced in the tube well pits during the rainy season. It can cause suffocation and people can become unconscious after a few minutes of entering the pits.

EDUCATION

PAU extends admission date of diploma courses
Ludhiana, July 22
The PAU has extended the date for seeking admission to various diploma courses to August 5. According to Dr V.K. Sharma, Registrar, due to the non availability of suitable candidates, some seats for diploma in agriculture at Gurdaspur are lying vacant. He said those candidates who had passed plus two with physics, chemistry and one of the three subjects — biology, agriculture or mathematics, could apply.

PCTE signs MoU with Pak institute

The Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE) recently signed an MoU with Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology, Islamabad, on the occasion of the annual convocation of the institute.

Teachers to submit memo to CM
Samrala, July 22
In order to focus attention of the government on the long-pending demands of the teachers of non-government colleges of the state, the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union will submit memorandum to the Punjab Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioners of the state on July 26. This will be followed by submission of memorandum to the Chief Minister through different MLAs of the state.

DIMT students do well
Ludhiana, July 22
Punjab Technical University has declared the MBA IVth semester result and students of Doraha Institute of Management & Technology (DIMT), Doraha, have done very well in the exams. Seventy per cent of the students have scored more than 73 per cent marks.

Tiny tots of Golden Time Pre-Nursery and Nursery School celebrated seed germination day. Mrs Jaswinder Chadha, Principal of the school, gave detailed instructions on how to take care of plants. Children were told about the sowing and watering the seeds. They spent a lot of time in the garden.

Aroona churns out love story
Ludhiana, July 22
Actor-director Aroona Irani along with Sangeeta Ghosh of “Jis Des mein Nikla Hoga Chand” was in the city here last evening. They had come to promote the new serial, “Rabba Ishq Na Hove”, which goes on Zee TV from July 26.

U-16 cricket team

The players (u-16 years) have been selected to represent the Government Model Senior Secondary School of Punjab Agricultural University in the forthcoming Ludhiana District Schools Zonal Tournament, according to Mr Anil Kumar, coach of the team. The competition in various discplines would be held at different venues slated to begin in the last week of this month.
