Pak institute invites Kang

Ludhiana, July 14
Dr K.N.S. Kang, Director, Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE), has been invited as guest of honour on the occasion of the annual convocation of the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST) to be held at Islamabad, Pakistan, on July 16.

SZABIST has been established and is promoted by Ms Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan. SZABIST has branches in Karachi, Islamabad, Dubai and Larkana.

Dr Kang will share the dais with the chief guest during the convocation ceremony at SZABIST, Islamabad.

During his six-day trip to Pakistan, Dr Kang will hold talks regarding the development of management and technical education in Asia with top officials and academic professionals of Pakistan in different universities and management/technical institutes.

SZABIST is a chartered institute and is approved and recognized by the Higher Education Commission as a degree granting institution. Asia Inc, a leading Asian magazine, has ranked SZABIST as one of the top 12 business schools from South Asia.

Business Week, leading international business magazine, in its latest 2003 online edition has listed SZABIST among the best business schools of the world. SZABIST is listed along with other top schools of the world, including Wharton, Kellogg, Harvard and MIT. SZABIST is one of the 17 business schools from Asia recognised by Business week.

The PCTE delegation will also deliver lectures on various management topics at various universities and leading management and technical institutes of Pakistan such as Quaid-I-Azam University, Comsat Institute, IQRA University, NCBA&E Lahore and SZABIST during this trip.

Amanpreet tops Punjab colleges in history

A city girl has topped the state in the MA (history) examination conducted by Panjab University in April She has had a brilliant academic career throughout. She passed out from Khalsa College for Women and holds her college Principal, Dr Virinder Thind, and Dr Amrit Walia, Head of Department History of KCW, in high esteem as they were instrumental in motivating.

She spent almost 18 to 19 hours studying during the examination days. Amanpreet, talking to Ludhiana Tribune, said, “Normally, I study for five to six hours but during examinations, I barely slept for about five hours. I have a passion for great personalities that figure in history. That is why I love to read biographies and autobiographies of great men and women.”

Amanpreet did her graduation from Govt College for Women where her mother Dr Surinder Gill, is Head of the Psychology Department. In spite of a major setback — the sudden death of her father due to cardiac arrest — Amanpreet maintained her good aggregate. Her mother, beaming proudly, said all teachers were very happy with her.

In the college examinations held in December, she had topped in all four papers and also got an additional prize for topping. When she appeared for the B.Ed entrance examination, she was placed at the 58th position, out of 47,000 candidates. She passed B.Ed in flying colours too and now she will join M.Ed as she is desirous of teaching in an Education College.

Amanpreet says, “I feel teaching is the ideal profession for women. I have seen that my mother has handled her profession as well as home very well. I help her in her household work as I love cooking.”

GNIMT students shine in BCA exams

Students of the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology, Gujarkhan campus, have exhibited an excellent performance in academics once again. As per the results declared by Punjab Technical University (PTU) recently, GNIMT students have shown extraordinary performance in all semester examinations that were held in May 2005.

All students of the BCA-VI semester bagged the first division and 80 per cent among them had passed with honours by securing more than 70 per cent marks. Charanpreet Kaur bagged the first position by securing 91 per cent marks, Parul Munjal got the second position with 89 per cent marks, Kawaljeet Kaur secured the third position with 88 per cent marks, Rupinder Kaur stood fourth by securing 87.5 per cent marks and Roma Arora got the fifth position with 86.5 per cent marks.

Maths workshop at Sacred Heart

Ludhiana, July 14
Mathematics looked easy and fun at the maths workshop organised at Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School here today in collaboration with ALOHA, Ludhiana. ALOHA is an abacus learning of higher mathematics and is an internationally-renowned method of learning arithmetic to improve mental development of a child.

Mr Sanjeev Malhotra, a representative of ALOHA, India, gave students the first lesson of ALOHA programme. The children listened to him with attention when he told them the method of calculating two-digit addition and subtraction on fingers. After the programme, the children were seen playing with their fingers and posing questions to each other.

All teachers were unanimous in agreeing with him that this course would help children in improving their ability to solve mathematical problems faster besides improving child’s attention span, memory, analysing power, observation, listening power and logical ability.

Mourned: The Bharatiya Vidya Mandir reopened after summer vacation here today. Staff members, students and members of the BVM Trust observed two minute silence to mourn the death of Dikshit Dhanda, a student of class XII (Commerce). All prayed to God for the departed soul to rest in peace and to give patience to the family members to bear the loss.

Jashn-e-Bahar staged at Sarabha Club

The Sarabha Ladies Club today staged ‘Jash-ne-Bahar’, a skit based on the Mughal era. The stage was tastefully decorated giving an ambience that suited the theme. The members were specially dressed for the occasion wearing heavy suits, sarees and shararas with golden and silver embroidery. The members sang ghazals in their melodious voice.

The new team includes Ms Sarita Aggarwal, chairperson, Ms Meenu Aggarwal, president, Ms Shammi Bindra, vice-president, Ms Arvinder Manchanda, secretary, Ms Anu Mehra, treasurer, Ms Alka Verma, joint treasurer, Ms Manjinder Kaur, auditor, Ms Shammi Bindra and Ms Neelam Manchanda, consultants, and Ms Binny Sharma, joint secretary.

Tournament committee meeting held

A meeting of the District Schools Tournament Committee was held at R.S. Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, here today. Mr Bachitter Singh Bachan, president of the committee, presided over the meeting in which all DPEs, PTIs and lecturers along with the officials concerned took part. Dates of the zonal and district-level tournaments for the year 2005-06, were decided at the meeting.

Mr Rupinder Singh, DPE and general secretary (conduct) of the committee, said the ties would be held at all respective zonal venues on July 21 at 10 am to finalise the dates for the zonal tournaments. Before resolving about the forthcoming tournaments, Mr Nahar Singh, PIS and finance secretary of the committee, read out the balance sheet for the previous year. According to the media secretary, Mr Dalvinder Singh Minhas, other prominent persons who attended the meeting were Mr Darshan Singh Dhaliwal and Principal Sukhdev Lal.
