Jammu, July 7
Two schoolgirls were washed away in a flash flood in a nullah at Ramnagar in Udhampur district today, while over 200 marooned persons were rescued by IAF helicopters and Army personnel in various parts of Jammu, which were flooded due to the heavy rains.

The Tawi river, which flows through the city, has touched the danger mark. The Chenab and Ujh rivers were also flowing above the red mark.

Normal life has been thrown out of gear, particularly in the Jammu, Udhampur, Doda and Kathua districts where the rivers and nullahs are in spate.

Several trains have been cancelled and flights are also affected. The Amarnath pilgramage was suspended today and no vehicles were allowed to proceed towards Srinagar.

IAF helicopters rescued 25 trapped persons at Billawar in the Kathua district and 14 from an Island in the Tawi here.

At least seven houses were submerged in the Tawi waters, while two temples were also under the water.

About 500 vehilces were stranded at various places on the Jammu-Srinagar highway that has been closed due to landslides between Ramban and Banihal. The water level in the Chenab is alarmingly rising in the Doda district.

Reports said a number of low-lying villages in the Pargwal area were submerged and the Army personnel were engaged in rescuing the marooned people.

A spokesman of the Army said 70 persons had been rescued in the Kalian village in the Ranbirsinghpura sector. The standing crops were submerged under 4-ft of water. Eight motorboats had been deployed by the Army at Makwal and Badiyal Brahmanan.

Meanwhile floods in the Chenab washed away a small bridge and a road to Baglihar dam project, official sources said today.

A 50-metres bridge and 200-metres of road to the dam in the Chanderkote area of Doda district was washed away in the wee hours, they said, adding that the Chenab was flowing six metres above the danger level at the dam site.

Over 200 labourers were evacuated from the low-lying areas of dam site last night, the sources said, adding that the situation there has become “very serious”.

“Although, the dam has 105 metre-side concrete base, river banks are weak to withstand the increasing water pressure,” they said.

The water level of the Chenab at Pul Doda was 834 metres and 772 metres at the Ramban dam site, they said. A diversion tunnel number-2 at the dam site has collapsed and a 105-mtrs steel bridge has been washed away in the swirling waters over the last two days.

The district authorities started evacuating over 1,200 persons from Pul Doda village this morning and activated an early warning system following the red alert sounded yesterday, Ramban, SSP, Gareeb Dass said.

Temple opened after 15 years

Devsar (South Kashmir), July 7
Amidst chiming of bells and aroma of incense sticks, the doors of the famous Tripur Sundari Temple complex, nestled in the dense woods and narrow valleys of South Kashmir, are open again after 15-year closure forced by insurgency.

Over 2,000 Kashmiri Pandit migrants have visited this 600-year-old temple complex, popularly known as “Khunbarian Mata”, located in the highly militancy-prone Devsar forests of Anantnag district this year.

“I have come here after a gap of 16 years to ring the bells of the historic temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati,” said state government engineer R.K. Pandita, who, along with his wife and two daughters, came all the way from Jammu to seek the blessings of the goddess.

Pandita, who left the place along with over 3,00,000 Kashmiri Pandits during the emergence of Pak-sponsored militancy in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989, is among 70,000 migrants who have visited different temples, including the Kheerbhawani, Shankeracharaya, Shailputri, Zeethyar Parbut, Nagbal and Durga Nag shrines, during their seven-day stay in the valley.

Another 65-year-old Kashmiri Pandit, Ragunath Bhat, who started with darshan of the famous Rogniya Bagwati at the Kheerbhawani temple at Tulmullah, has sought the blessings at Shankeracharya, Durga Nag, Zalaji, Hari Parbhat, Nagbal and Tripve shrines.

The gates of 167 ancient temples were locked during the rise of militancy in 1989-90. Of these, 47 temples were either burnt or destroyed during militancy period.

Rest of the temples were renovated or taken care of by the security forces who in most of the places in the valley set up camps and posts in these temples.

Pandits could not visit the temple in such a large numbers as they did during this year, said a senior Army officer who was also instrumental in getting the repairs of the Tripur Sundari Temple.

Northern Command Chief Lieut-Gen Hari Prasad, during his early posting as head of armed division, “Kiloforce”, then a Major-General, had several gutted temples, including the famous Shailputri temple (Devi Bal) in Baramula, rebuilt. — PTI
