City cops get Hawara’s custody

Grain market waterlogged
Chandigarh, July 7
The Grain Market in Sector 26 is entirely water-logged. Mr Raj Kumar Bansal, a former president of the Market Association, said sewers in a significant area were blocked. “The water pools are a perfect setting for the nurturing of mosquitoes and flies. The stench in the area is nauseating”, he said.

RITES approached for monorail project

Monorail is the most accepted alternate mode of transportation being worked out for implementation in the city. The administration has even toyed with the ideas of electric trolley buses. However, there is a general agreement on the monorail system argued as most economically and ecologically viable system for local requirements.

A woman living in the Commando Complex in Phase XI sustained 85 per cent burn injuries while cooking here today. According to the police, clothes of Sukhwinder Kaur, wife of constable Iqbal Singh, caught fire while she was cooking food.

Gang duping foreign tourists busted

A gang of cheats operating in Manali and Jaipur, accused of duping foreign tourists, was today “busted with the arrest of two members” by the local police here.

3 vehicles stolen
Chandigarh, July 7
Two cars and a scooter were stolen from the city during the past 48 hours. The police arrested a woman on the allegations of stealing and another man for indulging in gambling.

Naya Gaon resident found dead
Chandigarh, July 7
A 70-year-old resident of Naya Gaon was found dead this morning near the Cricket Stadium in Sector 16, here. The police handed over the body to the family of the deceased without a post-mortem on the request of the family members.

A lot really, says Ms Mary Ann Maslak, who teaches sociology in the School of Education at St. John’s University, New York. “The city is a unique combination of modernity and tradition. The cultural encounter here is proving to be very interesting and our perspectives are changing.”

SGPC medical college must ‘cut’ fee

The Gursikh Naujwan Sabha had demanded reduction in fee in the case of seats reserved for Sikhs in the medical college run by the SGPC. Mr Sandeep Singh, president of the sabha, said at a press conference here today that the fee structure at Guru Ram Dass Medical College, Amritsar, was beyond the reach of the common man.

Thrillers for movie buffs this weekend
Equally determined to forge his identity as director, Anubhav Sinha of ‘Tum Bin’ and ‘Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai’ fame, is all set to prove his worth with ‘Dus’ which is reportedly inspired from Hollywood film “24 Hours.” But Anubhav and producer Nitin Manmohan deny that ‘Dus’ is inspired from any Hollywood film. The movie stars Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, and Abhishek Bachchan. ‘Dus’ is much slicker and technically a superior product from Nitin Manmohan’s banner.
