Encroachments removed from CPWD land
Pathankot, June 16
A bid by some miscreants to encroach upon the CPWD land on the Pathankot bypass was foiled today by the local administration and the police.
Last night some miscreants started raising wooden vends on the Pathankot bypass near the railway overbridge. By morning, besides raising wooden vends, they put barbed wire around about 100 square feet land.
14 SDMs, 11 DTOs shifted

Five bodies brought out from canal

Rescue workers removed five bodies from Sidhwan canal, today while search was on for more victims in the last evening incident when several persons drowned after being electrocuted while bathing in the canal.
Mann’s residence raided

Industry to challenge power tariff hike
Ludhiana, June 16
Industry associations in the city have decided to challenge the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission’s decision to increase power tariffs in the state electricity tribunal. Industry representatives also alleged that the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) gave distorted facts to the commission, that led to the decision of hike in tariffs.
150 benefit from limb replacement camp

The Ambuja Cement Foundation (ACF) organised a limb replacement camp to aid the physically challenged on the company premises today. Over 150 persons were benefited from the camp.

Glaxo workers compromise
Nabha, June 16
The ongoing tussle between the terminated workers and the local management of Glaxo-Smithkline ended on a happy note today when both parties entered into an agreement with the intervention of MLA Kaka Randip Singh, the SDM and the DSP of Nabha. The terminated factory workers and the Nabha police clashed on May 22, injuring 13 workers and five policemen. Since then the matter was burning and it was sorted out today when the factory accepted many demands of the workers with the mediation of the MLA.

Residents of Golden City Enclave here have complained that they are getting virtually no water and electricity supply.
According to Mr Ravinder Singh, a resident of the colony, over 25 families were living in the colony, which were facing acute water and electricity shortage.

Somi Tungwalia, a Punjabi singer from Malwa, has come up with a novel audio cassette having songs based on the theme of blood donation. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Rahul Bhandari, released the cassette, “Khundania nu Pranam”, on the occasion of World Blood Donors Day yesterday.
Journalists, cops donate blood

Funeral van donated

A funeral van, purchased by the local municipal council and the Rotary Club, was donated to the public at a function organised here today.
The keys of the van were handed over by the Kharar MLA, Mr Bir Devinder Singh, to the council president, Mr Charanjit Singh. The maintenance of the van will be done by the civic body.
Dowry death: husband gets life term
Moga, June 16
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Sukhdev Singh, today sentenced a man to life imprisonment and his mother and father to 10-year in jail in a dowry death case.
Sources said the victim, Manjinder Kaur, had got married to Sukhwinder Singh of Bilaspur last year. Her parents had given Rs 2 lakh in dowry, but soon after her marriage her in-laws started harassing her for more money.

Pbi varsity BA-III result out

The result of BA Part-III conducted in April by Punjabi University was declared today. Giving this information in a press note, Dr Baldev Singh, Chief Coordinator, Examination, said the result would be available on the university website — www.universitypunjabi.org — by tomorrow.
Cocoons costly, produce cheap

Silk farmers in the district have been facing exploitation by traders. They get very low price of their produce. While price of cocoons was Rs 250 to Rs 300 per kg farmers here get only just Rs 200 to Rs 210 per kg.
