City girls, boys win national softball openers

Chandigarh, May 25
The teams of Chandigarh boys and girls won their opening matches comfortably on the opening day of the 18th Sub-Junior National Softball Championship at the Government College for Men in Sector 11 here today. Twentyone teams from different states are participating in it which is being organised by the Chandigarh Amateur Softball Association. Playing before the home crowd, Chandigarh boys beat Uttar Pradesh by 13-0. The Chandigarh also outclassed West Bengal by 21-2 in their group B encounter. The hosts superiority was evident as the West Bengal surrendered at the end of the first innings.

Punjab girls were given a tough fight by Maharashtra by 13-9 in a closely fought group H league match. Delhi beat Uttaranchal by 17-3 in a group F encounter. Madhya Pradesh proved too good for Manipur by 16-3 in a group B fixture.

Honda beat Morrison by 31 runs

Prestige Honda beat J.L. Morrison XI by 31 runs and entered the quarterfinal in the ICL Inter-Institutional Cricket Tournament, organised by the Employees Sports and Recreation Club at Cricket Stadium, Sector 3, here today.

In the other league matches, the Chandigarh Lawyers Sports Association (CLSA) ousted United Steel Industries (USI) by 58 runs and in the last match of the day Punjab Warehousing Corporation was routed by Anron Cycle Industries by three wickets.

Brief scores: Prestige Honda XI 161 for 2 in 22 overs (Madan Joshi 92; Arpinder Bedi 44; Om Parkash 2 for 26). J.L. Morrison 130 all out (Berjinder 48; Deepak 42; Sumeet Verma 4 for 23)

Deepinder enters quater-final of snooker tie

Deepinder Singh reserved his birth in the quarterfinal round by toppling Akshay Goyal in the pre quarter tie (best of five frames) of snooker tie at 40-37, 50-55, 79-41, 60-67, 85-80 in the ongoing Fifth Saurabh Khattar Memorial Billiards and Snooker Championship held at the Chandigarh Club, here, today.

In the second match of the day, it was a close contest between Vineet Khosla and Judge Bali in the first set but the game went in favour of Vineet Khosla The score read as 40-33, 52-30, 33-43, 38-56, 68-30.

In the third match, Sandeep Kochhar trounced Karanbir Singh Narula and gave a straight set defeat 58-39, 70-30, 59-24. Third seed Sandeep Chadha beat Anup Kumar in a one sided affair 83-25, 50-22, 58-47.

In the first round of 150 points billiards game, the Ajay Gupta could not resist the challenge posed by Anand Chhiber and lost the game 145-152.

Khalsa School wins hockey tourney

Chandigarh, May 25
Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Ropar, defeated Guru Harkrishan Public School, Delhi by 6-2 in the finals of First Sant Attar Singh Memorial Hockey tournament held at Akal Academy playground, Baru Sahib, Solan, 55 km from here, from May 16 to 22, as per information received here.

The tournament was organised by the Akal Academy Baru Sahib in which 18 hockey teams of boys and girls from various schools of Delhi, Punjab, Noida (Uttar Pradesh) and Chandigarh participated.

The final match of girls’ section was won by New Public School, Chandigarh, beating Government Model Senior Secondary School, Mohali, with a huge margin of 12-0.

Tarlochan Singh Bawa, a veteran Olympian, who represented hockey team in 1948 Olympic Games held in London, gave away the prizes and certificates to the winners, runners-up and third position holders.

City pugilist for national camp

Chandigarh, May 25
City-based pugilist Satinder Kaur and NIS women boxing coach Sangeeta Rani have been selected for the national coaching camp for women scheduled to be held in Bangalore from May 30 to June 30. After this one month camp, the Indian women boxing team will leave for Ukraine to participate in the training -cum- competition meet to be held there from July 1 to 15.
