Govt stand on schools irks teachers
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, May 19
Commenting on the statement of Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Deputy Chief Minister, regarding the ‘corporisation’ of government schools, Mr Charan Singh Sarabha, general secretary of the Government School Teachers Union Punjab, and state committee member of the Anti-Privatisation Adhyapak Morcha , Punjab, in a press note said, “It is just another name for privatisation of government schools to corporate houses in another form.”

Mr Sarabha regretted that the Punjab Government has made a mockery of the serious and sensitive matter of providing basic free, compulsory and quality education to children of the state by issuing and contradictory statement of different ministers. The Chief Minister at one time announced the handing over of 2000 government schools to industrial houses and a few days later, denied that. The Finance Minister, Mr Singla, who is also a member of the Bhattal Committee has pleaded for closing down of the government schools in the state.

Ms Bhattal, a few days ago, had said that privatisation of government schools was not on the agenda of the Bhattal Committee, but now she says the issue would be decided in June by the committee.

Mr Sarabha said the Anti-Privatisation Adhyapak Morcha at the state-level convention on May 15 in Jalandhar had exposed these “designs” of the government and decided to intensify the mass struggle of teachers. A state-level protest march would be held at Bathinda on June 5 and on June 25, effigies of the Punjab Government burnt throughout the state at different headquarters and important centres.

Albert John
Albert John

Ludhiana, May 19
“I cannot recollect when I started singing, but I was always singing. Seeing me so absorbed in singing, my parents brought me a guitar. I think from that moment my guitar and I have been inseparable,” said 19-year-old Albert John.

Albert has appeared for his +2 examination and is awaiting results. Albert has got a job of music teacher in the local Satpaul Mittal School and imparts knowledge in western music to children.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, he said, “I will pursue my education in music only because I am seriously interested in composing music. I am learning playing of keyboard. The Trinty College of London conducts examination and I will get a music degree from there. Besides guitar and keyboard, I can play drums too.”

After my matriculation exam, I went to Panchgani to receive training in classical vocal music from Sangeet Sadhna Mandir. I have been learning guitar and western music from Mr Dheeraj, a music teacher of Sacred Heart Convent School where I studied for 12 years.

He says that he will do his graduation through correspondence course as he wants to keep playing, learning and teaching music.

“Music is in our blood,” Albert said. “My sister Maria was in school choir and so am I. My father has a good singing voice and my mother sings too. In the evenings I give tuitions in guitar to students. This helps me both financially and in my practice too. In fact, I started giving tuitions while I was in class IX only. I can sing equally well in English and Hindi and Punjabi. I am a member of Church choir too and every Sunday one will find me singing hymns.”

Albert has received several awards. He cherishes the one he received in Symphony 2003 organised by BFU Music Channel in Chandigarh for group singing.
